RAYS (boxscore)

THE GOOD: If you had Luke Maile in your Pick To Click pool, you win! With the Rays trailing 3-1 in the 7th inning and having not done much offensively against Drew Pomeranz, Maile got a hold of one and hit it over the Green Monster for a game-tying 2-run home run. Evan Longoria hit his 31st home run an inning later that proved to be the game winner. With more than 5 weeks to go, Longo is now just 2 home runs shy of his career high (33) which came way back in 2009. But back to Maile for a second. Is there a worse pitch a pitcher can throw in Fenway Park than a hanging curveball to a right-handed batter? Even if a batter mishits it, it is probably going to be a fly ball to left field and routine fly balls can go off or over that wall. Just look at Maile’s eyes light up on this swing.

THE BAD: Alex Colome got the save, but he looked shaky doing it. In his first appearance since the bad blown save against the Astros, Colome gave up a single and a walk to the first four batters he faced. Then he got ahead of Sandy Leon 0-2 in the count. This is good place to waste a pitch. But you also have to be careful not to throw a wild pitch with the tying run on second base. Well, Colome went slider and was a little too careful, hanging one that was just begging to be hit hard. Fortunately for Colome, the pitch was so bad that it looked like Leon got caught completely off guard and couldn’t swing the bat. You can see the look on Leon’s face, he got a meat ball and got caught with his pants down.

THE TELLING: Alex Cobb will make his first big league start since 2014 on Friday. The Rays will stick with a 6-man rotation for the rest of the year…Desmond Jennings has cleared release waivers and is now a free agent.
