Kate Upton

Kate Upton attended the game to watch Justin Verlander pitch for the Tigers.

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Tigers 2, RAYS 1 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Chris Archer was as dominant as ever through the first 6 innings, not allowing a base runner and striking out 10. There were some hints of trouble to come. When his pitches missed, they seemed to really miss. But when he was hitting his spots he was unhittable. Then it unraveled in the 7th when the first hit was just a weak bouncing infield single. Then an error by Asdrubal Cabrera probably should have gotten Archer out of the inning without giving up any runs but eventually 2 would score with 2 outs…Kevin Kiermaier was doing Kevin Kiermaier things making a spectacular catch in the 6th inning to keep the perfect game hopes alive. Here is a good breakdown of the catch.

THE BAD: Steven Souza committed the one sin that Joe Maddon never tolerated, he didn’t hustle and it may have cost the Rays the game. Souza led off the bottom of the 7th with the Rays down 2-1 and he hit a line drive to left field. The ball got lost in the lights and Yoenes Cespedes dropped the ball. Souza, still holding the bat, started to jog to first base and then even stopped before realizing the ball had been dropped. If he is running hard to first, Maddon’s only rule, there is at least a chance he ends up on second base. It was no guarantee, especially with Cespedes’ arm, but it was certainly possible. As fate would have it, Souza was then caught trying to steal second and later on James Loney and Logan Forsythe hit back-to-back singles and Souza was not on base to score. If he gets to second on the hit he scores. If he steals second he scores. If he stays at first, he probably scores. He didn’t score and the Rays lost the game 2-1.

THE TELLING: Bobby Wilson was called up to take the roster spot of David DeJesusKate Upton (above) was at the game, presumably to watch Justin Verlander pitch…The Rays are now 51-52, 2.5 games back in the Wild Card.

  • One executive on another team told Jerry Crasnick that they think the Rays leaked Brad Boxberger’s name as a trade candidate just to “gauge his value.” [@jcrasnick]
  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscoresBlake Snell made his second triple-A start and allowed just 1 run on 1 hit and 1 walk in 5 innings. He struck out 7. Nick Franklin had 2 doubles and 2 RBI in the 5-3 win.  Richie Shaffer was also 2-4 with a double…Dayron Varona hit his 4th double-A home run in Montgomery’s loss to Tennessee…German Marquez tossed 7 shutout innings for Charlotte in their 2-0 win over Dunedin. He struck out 5 and walked none…Bowling Green’s game was suspended due to rain.

  1. Starmand says:

One of the good things about the Rays having a day off is, that it reduces the amount of frustration experienced during a game.

The quality of frustration stays the same, though. It's a sort of linear degree thing. Interspersed by the occasional great defensive play or brilliant opportune hitting.

I have to learn how to play golf. Yeah, that's the ticket! No more frustrations evah!
