The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS 10, Tigers 2 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: CURT CASALI! Casali hit 2 home runs for the second straight  game. In his last 20 at bats, Casali has 8 hits, 6 (!) home runs, and 8 RBI. He is just the 3rd catcher to have more than one 2-HR game and (of course) the first to do it in back-to-back games. In fact, Casali is the first Rays player to have back-to-back multi-HR games since Greg Vaughn in 2002. The last player to do it in his first 50 games was Casali’s college teammate Pedro Alvarez and Casali did it off of former Vandy teammate David Price. Casali is also just the second rookie catcher with back-to-back multi-HR games, joining Kenji Johjima (2006 with Mariners). The immediate thought is, can Casali keep this up? Not necessarily 4 home runs every 2 games, but can he be a power hitter? His 11 HR this year is already his career high at any level. But at the same time, Casali has never played more than 94 games in a season. In 2013, he had 10 HR in just 81 games between high-A and double-A. So there is some pop in his bat. He might not be a 35-home run guy. But with regular playing time, he is probably a 20-HR guy and that is a lot more than the Rays are used to getting from their backstops. Buster Who?…Easy to overlook Jake Odorizzi’s performance, but he allowed just 1 run and struck out 8 in 6 innings. Solid performance against a good offense.

THE BAD: The Bad is taking the day off.

THE TELLING: The Rays scored 10 runs for the 3rd time this season and the first time since May 17, a span of 63 games…Today’s game is not being televised locally on Sun…The Rays are now 51-51, 7.5 games back in the East and just 2.5 games behind the Twins in the Wild Card.

  • Marc Topkin writes that the Rays have “several ongoing conversations” about other potential trades prior to Friday’s deadline. []
  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscores] Durham lost 9-3 with Matt Andriese gave up 6 runs (4 earned) in 5 innings. RF Taylor Motter had 4 hits. Grady Sizemore was 2-4 and Richie Shaffer had a double and 2 RBI. Hak-Ju Lee committed his 14th and 15th errors of the season, both on throws…Montgomery lost 8-0 with newly-promoted Taylor Guerrieri giving up 4 runs in 3 innings on 6 hits and 2 walks. Dayron Varona went 1-3 with a walk…Charlotte swept a double-header against Dunedin. Brent Honeywell struck out 7 in 6 innings in game 1, allowing 2 runs. Willy Adames went 2-5 with a walk. LF Granden Goetzman hit a grand slam in the nightcap, just his 2nd home run of the season…Bowling Green beat West Michigan 2-0 with Yonny Chirinos tossing 7 shutout innings.

A “prospect highlight” of Rays’ first-round pick Garrett Whitley.

  1. Rob says:

One of Casali's HRs was an opposite field jack too.

  2. angrybuddha says:

On the broadcast last night, they indicated that Casali missed Price by one year at Vandy.

  3. Ken says:

Now that the Tigers have put Price on the market I wonder if they'd take Smyly, Franklin and Adames for him. We did.
