RAYS 4, Yankees 3 (12; boxscore)

THE GOOD: Matt Joyce is on Fire. Well, he was on fire. He hit a home run in the first inning, his 3rd in his last 6 plate appearances. But then he promptly went 0-5 the rest of the game, leaving 8 runners on base…Brad Boxberger. What a great job by Boxbergler to get the final 6 outs of the game and seal it for the Rays…Logan Forsythe. Forsythe has been a punching bag at times this season and for good reason. But at the same time, the Rays could do a lot worse on the bench with their budget. In his last 10 games (9 starts), Forsythe is 16-35 (.457) with 3 walks, 3 extra-base hits, and a go-ahead single in the 12th inning last night.

THE BAD: Joel Peralta. We talked about this yesterday. There was a reason to be concerned about using Peralta after having to be called in to put out the fire in the 9th inning on Sunday. There was discussion that Peralta actually looked good last night and just made the one mistake (game-tying home run in the 9th inning). But let’s face it, most home runs are mistakes and Peralta has shown this season that he makes more mistakes when pitching on no rest.

THE TELLING: The Rays placed Yunel Escobar on the DL following last night’s game. The move is retroactive, so Escobar will be able to return in about a week…It took extra innings, but the Rays struck out 9 Yankees batters setting the MLB record for most strikeouts in one month…Jeremy Hellickson is expected to make a rehab start with Durham or Charlotte on Thursday…The Rays are now 36-49 and 12-7 in their last 19. They are 3.0 games behind the Red Sox for 4th place in the East. The Rays also no longer have the worst record in baseball, one-half game ahead of the D-Backs.

  • Leslie Anderson continues to hit well in Japan. [WDBB]
  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscoresNate Karns gave up 8 runs in just 4.2 innings and the Bulls managed just 5 hits in the 10-0 loss…Montgomery won 3-2 in 10 innings on Joey Rickard’s RBI double in the top of the 10th…Charlotte split a double-header with Albert Suarez tossing 5 shutout innings with 4 strikeouts and no walks in the win. In the second game, Charlotte took a lead in the top of the 7th (final) inning only to lose on a 3-run, walk-off home run in the bottom half of the inning.

How is K2 not in the good? He's our best player right now not named Jake McGee or David Price. Dude should be at the top of the line up. Homer in three straight. Multi-hit game in 4 straight

JoMa continues to put him in the lineup and that's all I care about. This guy is amazing and hopefully has lit a fire under some butts. He continues to play like a winner. I love watching this kid play!

I've been one of the guys blasting Forsythe all season, so I have to eat a little crow now because he is definitely producing. Hope he keeps it up.
