Blue Jays 10, RAYS 5 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Hard to hate. Monday’s game was one of those that you just shrug off. After winning 4 straight including a sweep of the Red Sox, it is hard to get upset about a game in which the Rays hit 3 home runs and score 5 runs. Most days that is going to be good enough.

THE BAD: Erik Bedard. This is one of those “I told you so”s that we wish wouldn’t come true. We started to see it in his last start. But it was just a matter of time before Erik Bedard started getting knocked around, especially with the long ball. In the first inning it was 5 straight hits before recording an out. Later it was back-to-back home runs after the Rays had tied the game at 2-2.

THE TELLING: Brandon Guyer went on the DL with a broken thumb. He is expected to miss 3 weeks. He was replaced by Alex Colome who made his first appearance since being suspended 50 games for using a horse steroid. He was demoted after the game. A position player will be called up today, but it sounds like it won’t be Kevin Kiermaier. He has a sore knee, so adjust your rage accordingly…Juan Sandoval has been released by the Rays. The one-eyed pitcher was with the Durham Bulls…Joel Peralta broke Dan Wheeler’s franchise record for appearances by a pitcher…Ben Zobrist will play in rehab games for Charlotte on today and tomorrow and is expected to rejoin the Rays on Friday in Boston…One day after complaining about Yunel Escobar stealing a base with a 5-run lead, the Red Sox were trailing by 5 runs to the Braves when they scored 5 runs in one inning and eventually won 8-6.

  • Sounds like some in Durham were not happy that Alex Colome was promoted ahead of some on the Bulls roster. [TBO.com]
  • Haven’t mentioned this yet, but Tom Foley is wearing Don Zimmer’s jersey and will continue to do so. [FoxSports]
  • How risky is the Josh McCown move? [JoeBucsFan]
  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscoresMerrill Kelly allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in 5.0 innings. His ERA is now 2.45. Mikie Mahtook was 2-4 with a double and is hitting .318.

  1. Jason says:

Bedard and Hutchinson were both terrible. Blue Jays realized it first and went to their pen early otherwise it would've been a 10-10 game in the 6th. I see Bedard bouncing back though, hopefully, we need 5 more nice starts out of him before hellickson may be back with the club. Blue Jays are good best in the east this year. Got to win the next 2 to stay close.

  2. ken says:

The Jays are a nightmare team for Bedard to face. Way too many power RH bats. We need to take the next two.

  3. Rob says:

There was no doubt they would lose yesterday - they always lose when they wear camo hats.

Can you give us your thoughts on who Jeremy Hellickson will replace and who has the inside track.

    • Cork Gaines says:

Well, the big thing is as long as Odorizzi and Bedard are pitching well (enough), the Rays are going to take their sweet time with Hellickson. A lot can happen over the next 1-2 months. If it comes down to it and nobody else needs a break or is injured and Bedard is still pitching well, Odorizzi can be optioned to the minors. The Rays probably won't want to take a chance cutting Bedard again and getting nothing in return.
