icon_19056493The Rays have announced that they have avoided arbitration with David Price by agreeing to a 1-year, $14 million contract (first reported by Marc Topkin).

Price had a salary of $10.1 million in 2013. However, Price had $4 million of that deferred to this season, bringing the total commitment to Price in 2014 to $18 million.

The Rays can still trade Price if the right offer comes along. But at this point it is looking more and more like Price will start the season in a Rays uniform.

Price’s raise also brings the projected payroll for the 2014 season to $76.3 million, not counting the $4 million in deferred salary for Price.

Price was projected to make $13.1 million via arbitration according to MLB Trade Rumors.

  1. Gus says:

2014 is the year the Rays win the Division and the World Series. Price at $14M at his peak is a great thing.

    I really like this team.

  2. edward williams says:

i am somewhat optomistic about next year, or this year, i feel real good about our infield, i think we did upgrade at catcher, i hope we keep lobaton, i think he will make a good catcher, of course not a molina fan, i m concerned about our outfield, really the best defensive player i feel we have out there is dj, wil meyers is very good in the outfield, but i didn't realize he hasn't been playing there long, he is a converted catcher, so i am optomistic just cautious

  3. JT says:

So glad we get Price back. He's a workhorse and we will need him if we want to win the hardest division in baseball. Sorry Sox fans.

  4. Dean says:

Not ready just yet to shut the door on a possible trade. Let's see what happens after Tanaka signs.

However, it's looking more and more like we go into the season with Price at the top of the rotation. Might as well go all in this year with as balanced as this roster appears to be right now.

  5. MET says:

I'm very excited about this. Hopefully he starts the season better than he did last year and avoids the injuries. I am really looking forward to March.

  6. AJNO says:

I'd take Odorizzi and 3 top tier prospects for Price & $14MM in 2014, and potential $18MM in 2015 any day of the week.

I guess thats the problem. Friedman and I are on the same page, and no one is willing to give back 3 top tier prospects...

  7. Dave L says:

This has zero bearing on his trade status.

Its just sort of a feel-good ending to avoid arbitration. It could make it slightly easier to trade him as the partner would have its 2014 costs fixed already. But its irrelevant really.

The Rays convinced Prices agent that his arb number would be between $13.75 to $14 mil and offered him the high end.

Once Tanakas off the block lets see if something shakes loose.

I think they all know the formula they use by now. I'm not saying I know how its calculated but they seem to have this down to a science.
