Blake Snell

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS 5, Yankees 3 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Is this the streakiest Rays team yet? It seems like this team can’t win or lose a game without doing it at least four times in a row. The latest is a 4-game winning streak that included this weekend sweep of the Yankees. The key for this streak and for winning 7 of their last 11 has been the starting pitching. You can see the talent with Blake Snell when he has the curveball working. Nasty.

Meanwhile, Kevin Kiermaier is good at baseball. On Saturday, with the Rays only up 1 run in the 7th, Kiermaier started a 3-run rally with one of his classic hustle doubles. The right fielder was playing deep, but this was basically just a routine hard-hit ball right to the right fielder. There are maybe two or three players in MLB who even think about going for two. Then, in the top of the 8th, he snubbed a potential Yankees rally when he made a gorgeous leaping grab at the wall, robbing Austin Romine of at least a double.

THE BAD: Isn’t the net above the Rays tank supposed to, you know, keep home runs from landing in the Rays tank? OK, Brad Miller’s home run didn’t land in the tank on the fly, so that is a positive, but it sure seemed to fall in there awfully easily, suggesting there might be some gaps there.

THE TELLING: Logan Morrison and Oswaldo Arcia were placed on the DL. Brad Boxberger was activated and Nick Franklin was promoted…Alex Cobb restarted his rehab assignment with Charlotte (he retired all 6 batters with 2 strikeouts) and Chase Whitley was moved to Montgomery for his rehab assignment…The Rays now have 10 winning/losing streaks of at least 4 games this season. They have 4 winning streaks of at least 4 games and they have 6 losing streaks of at least 4 games…12 different teams had scouts in attendance this series…[Durham 6, Louisville 3Jacob Faria struck out 7 and walked 5 in 5.2 innings, giving up just 1 run. Six different hitters had at least 2 hits, including Taylor Motter who went 3-4 and hit his 9th home run. Jaff Decker added his 10th home run.

  1. Geoff Peterson says:

I don't think the net is there as much to keep balls out as it is to keep balls from coming into the tank at a high velocity which might injure one of the animals.
