Emily Austen

Fox Sports Florida has announced that Emily Austen “is not scheduled to appear on any upcoming Fox Sports Florida or Fox Sports Sun broadcasts” after video surfaced of her making racist comments during a web broadcast with Barstool Sports.

[UPDATE] A source with the Rays has confirmed that Austen has been fired and will not appear on any future broadcasts.

[EARLIER] The video, which was originally broadcast live on Facebook, was later deleted, and then uploaded to Vimeo. It was then picked up by several outlets, including Deadspin.

In the video, Austen’s comments included:

  • She “didn’t even know that Mexicans were that smart,” in reference to a Yale-bound high school valedictorian announced she was undocumented.
  • The “Chinese guy is always the smartest guy in math class.”
  • She also referenced “the way I used to talk to the Jews in Boca” when she was a waitress, noting that she knew one customer was going to stiff her on a tip and that she was fired from that job two weeks later.
  • She also refers to Kevin Love as a “little bitch,” which is not so much racist as it is just petty and immature.

Towards the end of the clip below, she even drops the eye-roll worthy “I’m not trying to be racist” line.

Fox Sports Florida released a statement:

We were made aware that Emily Austen appeared in a social media video unaffiliated with FOX Sports in which she made insensitive and derogatory comments. She was not speaking on behalf of FOX Sports, nor do we condone any of the statements she made in the video. Emily has been advised that her comments were unacceptable, and she is not scheduled to appear on any upcoming FOX Sports Florida or FOX Sports Sun broadcasts.

The Rays released a statement saying (via TampaBay.com), “The Rays fully support Fox Sport Sun’s decision regarding Emily Austen.”

What isn’t clear is what that decision was. Has she been fired? It doesn’t sound like it. And if not, is Fox Sports Florida just waiting to see if this blows over? That would be disappointing if true.

We have reached out to the Rays for comment.

  1. DRR says:

Given her status as a contract employee paid per game, it is possible that they didn't refer to "firing" her because it is more about just not giving her more contract work.

  2. Rob says:

Wasn't there a draft last night?

  3. Jack Airy says:

I like Emily's humor and I would say her Jewish boss Stu Sternberg has thin skin. This firing is political correctness gone way to far. Hope she lands on her feet and gets a national job.
