The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS 8, Yankees 1 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: What do we make of the offense? On the one hand, the Rays are still 24th in MLB with 3.61 runs per game. They have been held to 3 runs or fewer in 13 of their 18 games. In their first 17 games of the season, Rays starting pitchers had pitched with a lead in just 17 innings. And entering Sunday’s game, the offense had scored their fewest runs in the first 17 games of the season since 2001, a team that lost 101 games. But at the same time, there are signs that the bats are coming around. For example, the Rays have scored 7+ runs in 3 of the last 8 games and are averaging 5.1 runs per game during that stretch. They also have 13 home runs in the last 8 games after hitting 10 in the first 10 games. And how pretty is Corey Dickerson’s swing? And how great is Michael Pineda’s “what have I done?!” reaction?

THE BAD: Part of me feels like we should be celebrating that Logan Morrison had a hit. But of course, he also had 4 other outs including 3 strikeouts. He is now 4-50 with 22 strikeouts. Luckily for Morrison, he is 2 plate appearances short of qualifying for the batting leader board. Otherwise, his .080 batting average is 35 points fewer than anybody else in MLB with at least 50 trips to the plate. He also has a whopping 22 strikeouts to go with that. You could sum up Morrison right now with his at bat in the second inning. The Rays have Pineda on the ropes. He gave up 5 runs in the first inning and then gave up a single to Logan Forsythe to start the second. Morrison didn’t even challenge Pineda, striking out on 3 pitches.

THE TELLING: Opposing teams are now 15-15 stealing bases against the Rays…After Blake Snell made his big-league debut on Saturday, he was sent back to Durham and Jhan Marinez was promoted to take his spot…

  • Stuart Sternberg on Hillsborough County giving the Yankees money to renevate Steinbrenner Field: “Any money going toward baseball in Florida is fine by me. It’s about the sport. It’s good for the spot. It shows that Hillsborough is committed to and sees the value of baseball in their midst.” []
  • Chris Archer talks about his slump. []
  • Brandon Guyer on being hit by pitches so often: “There’s no art to it, I promise. It’s not something I’m out there looking to do, it just happens. I don’t know how to get out of the way. It’s just instinctual that I don’t move. I’m not afraid.” [Fangraphs]

Blake Snell throwing easy 96. Not exactly “max effort” and he might be 150 soaking wet.

Can we please fill holes w/ dirt?

  2. monte says:

Morrison does not look like he is enjoying himself, which is understandable. I understand Cash keeping him in the lineup in an effort to pull him out of this terrible, prolonged slump. I just wish he could be sent to Durham or Montgomery for a couple of weeks to work it out.

  3. Drew says:

The Rays have played 19 games this season and we have gotten 8 game recaps. I find myself going over to Draysbay more and more often.
