Derek Jeter

Major League Baseball announced on Friday that Derek Jeter will be part of the entourage that will make the trip to Cuba where the Tampa Bay Rays will play the Cuban National Team.

It is not surprising that Jeter will take on a more active role as an ambassador to the game now that he is retired, and he may have made the trip no matter which team was going. But with the Rays playing in Cuba, this move is just going to further fuel speculation that Jeter will someday either join the Stuart Sternberg ownership group or he will front another group that works to buy the team from Sternberg.

Jeter has made it clear that he wants to be an owner in MLB someday and there is an obvious link to the Rays with Jeter building a mansion in St. Petersburg. However, Jeter also says he wants to be the person making the decisions when he is an owner, that he wants to be a Steinbrenner-like owner.

“I learned a lot from [Steinbrenner] on how to run an organization,” Jeter said last spring. “I would like [to be like Steinbrenner]. I thought he, in my opinion, I’m a little biased obviously, but I feel he was the best owner in all of sports.”

That quote suggests that Jeter won’t be a Rays owner as long as Sternberg is still calling the shots. But if Sternberg does grow frustrated with the stadium situation and decides to bail, Jeter will probably be the Bay Area’s best hope for keeping the team in the area. And staying active in the sport and close to the commissioner won’t hurt his stance when it comes time to buy a team.

And before anybody accuses me of making something out of nothing, well, there is this…

  1. Gus says:

Unless I missed something, the Jeter mansion is in Tampa's Davis Islands (a.k.a. St. Jetersburg), not St. Pete.

He doesn't have the cash to buy a controlling stake in the team, but could maybe buy an interest. As an ex-player, it would be hilarious to seem him deal with the "nerds" in the Rays front office.

    • OriginalTom says:

Do you think Jeter would do a better job than the "nerds" in the Rays front office.

      • Gus says:

I suspect Mr. Intangible would struggle with the math and the fact that for a stretch Jason Bartlett was a better SS than he was (as per Rays front office). But if you want a stadium, he'd be 100x smoother with the public than Stu has been. He'd be worth some equity just on that basis alone.

  2. Joe Dunn says:

Who is it that thinks he is living in St Pete??

    Poor journalism.

  3. woodrow744 says:

Nice to see such passion over Derek Jeter's house address.

    • Joe Dunn says:

      a) I get tired of media assuming that so-and-so is a likely candidate for coaching jobs, etc because his wife went to school with the owner - - blah blah blah - - usually waste of time speculation on slow news days (most are)
Here we have a story about a huge celeb that lives in TAMPA and somebody didnt bother to look it up
Yeah, this crap annoys me - - - but I am not a poster here or radio caller that thinks I am smarter than major league coaches and general managers
