Nick Franklin

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Nationals 16, RAYS 4 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Welp, it is always fun to see position players pitch and we got both Jake Elmore and Nick Franklin last night.

THE BAD: The 16 runs allowed are the most since the Rays gave up 17 in a 17-11 loss to the Blue Jays in 2010. The 12-run loss was just the second loss since 2009 of 12 runs or more, joining a 13-0 loss to the Indians in April, 2013. This was also just the third time in club history the Rays allowed 23 hits in a game. Team record is 25 vs Yankees in 2007. Thet also allowed 23 vs Yankees in 2005…It was just one of those nights.

THE TELLING: After the game, CJ Riefenhauser was sent back to Durham and the Rays re-signed Ronald Belisario who had opted out of his triple-A contract and added him to the big league roster…Evan Longoria was in the lineup and collected 2 hits while playing with a sore wrist after being hit the night before…Bryce Harper’s home run (see below) had a true distance of 445 feet, the 3rd-longest HR at The Trop this season…Matt Moore worked 4.2 innings in his 3rd rehab start, giving up 2 runs, striking out 3 and walking none…The Rays no longer have the worst winning percentage in MLB history. The Rays (.4642) just passed the Padres (.4640)…The Rays are now 36-30, 1.0 game ahead of the Yankees and 8.0 games ahead of the Red Sox.

  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscores] Durham lost 3-2 after giving up 2 runs to tie in the bottom of the 9th and a walk-off run in the bottom of the 10th. Everett Teaford tossed 6 shutout innings…Charlotte split a double-header with Lakeland with Matt Moore giving up 2 runs in 4.2 innings in the first game. He struck out 3 and walked none. Kean Wong went 4-7 in the 2 games. Willy Adames was 3-6 with a double and is now hitting .292…Bowling Green lost 13-3 with Casey Gillaspie going 0-4 with a walk.

Bryce Harper hit a ball that looked like it would have either landed in the Rays tank or possibly flown past the Rays tank, and then settled down into the net to protect the fish. Somewhere, PETA is smiling.

  1. Rob says:

Elmore and Franklin had better outings than Colome.

    • Rob says:

The best part was that in the stadium when they were putting the type of pitch on the scoreboard, they said Elmore threw a screwball, forkball and a palmball in a three-pitch sequence. Hillarious.

  2. Ken says:

Colome seems to be regressing with each start. His control is awful, particularly with men on base. Too many fat strikes and wild balls. Gotta be the man going down once Moore is ready.
Gotta think the Rays are resilient enough to shrug off last night's debacle, they happen. The group looked totally pissed in the dugout.
I'm still not convinced Franklin's ready for prime time. Much rather have Elmore in the back up infielder role. He's a better pitcher too. 🙂
If Schaffer continues his torrid pace at Durham I wonder how long it will be before trade rumors start to swirl around Longo and Loney.
    Big game tonight, Go Rays.

  3. Gus says:

Moore in the rotation for Colome next Saturday.
