They played a bowl game at The Trop this weekend and all anybody wanted to talk about was how crappy the AstroTurf looked and, well, they were right. The word “KNIGHTS” in the endzone looks like it is rendered in camouflage.

There was some thought that it just looks different during a football game because the network was using a bunch of camera positions not typically used during a baseball game. There is also some feeling that the coloring is intentional to look more “natural.” But I have seen a lot of football games on artificial turf and don’t remember one ever looking that bad.

And keep in mind that the AstroTurf is just four years old and is supposed to have a shelf life of 8-10 years. So, we are probably stuck looking at this until the Rays move to another stadium.

THE JUNKYARD DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • Brandon Gomes cleared waivers after being designated for assignment. He will remain with the team and will be invited to spring training.
  • According to Peter Gammons, “several GMs” think the Giants are going to put together a package of prospects and trade for Ben Zobrist. [GammonsDaily]
  • A National League team called the Rays to see if Evan Longoria is available and was “rebuffed.” Nick Cafardo also notes that Ryan Howard might eventually be released. Howard would make him an interesting DH target for the Rays. [BostonGlobe.com]
  • The Bucs clinched the top pick of the NFL Draft and the rights to pick Marcus Mariota. But it took a fourth quarter meltdown to make it happen. [BI Sports]

MLB put together a video of the best Rays calls of all time.

I've ALWAYS thought it looked splotchy and horrible, even for baseball. It's looked that way from day one, and I really don't understand why.

When has Peter Gammons been right about anything? Usually only after every other legitimate site already reported a story. I'm not sure even what the Rays would be looking for in terms of prospects any more unless it's a can't miss power hitter already tearing the cover off the ball at AAA.

Susac would be in any deal. One of the top catching prospects in baseball and major league ready. Add in one top arm (Crick/Mella) and it's a great deal.

Yeah, that photo doesn't make the "field" look too good. But I'm pretty sure no ankles were turned or femurs snapped during the game due to discoloration.
In fact, life went on without people being too distraught over the turf at the Trop.
Unfortunately, that place has become toxic for sports writers and reporters throughout our fair land. It belongs in the Land of Misfit Toys, a place that no one loves and everyone from the New York/Boston area(center of the universe)
loathes. What bothers these true sports fans, these "aficionados", is that none of us rubes seem to get it.

Rays signed Asdubral Cabrera. Interesting implications for Zobrist:

MLB summed up the best calls of all time in a little over ONE EFFING MINUTE?? Why did they bother? Really.

    Awful effort.
