MLB: Spring Training-Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay RaysSean Rodriguez has been traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a player to be named later and cash according to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Rodriguez was already on the way out from the team, having been designated for assignment last week. The Rays had ten days to work out a deal.

If Rodriguez had not been traded, he would have been released.

Rodriguez had become expendable with the acquisition of Nick Franklin in the David Price trade. However, the Rays are now without a backup first baseman.

Rodriguez started 14 games at first base in 2014, with James Loney starting the other 148 games.

and to think, we got all this for Scott Kazmir...

    • Geoff Peterson says:

We got some decent use out of Rodriguez and Torres, got Boxberger and Forsythe for Torres and money and a player to be named for Sean Rod. Sweeney was a bust but 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

    • Dave L says:

I know it was great to get so much modest productivity for a Kaz that was unfortunately falling of a cliff into a black hole. Look at the money he was paid to get sucked into the abyss.

Always a great move in hidsight.

  2. Kev says:

People talk a lot of smack about Sean Rod, but I admire a player who was as willing as he was to take up several positions to help the team. The bat was obviously not there, but the heart was. Best of luck, Sean.

  3. Chris Wise says:

Seems like a lot resting on Nick Franklin and he didn't show much in Durham last year. He's always looked good on paper, but ...

    • Geoff Peterson says:

Franklin had a nice year in Seattle in 2013. I wonder if his attitude suffered after being sent down because they spent 10's of millions to bring in Cano, a an established player at a position Franklin was considered to be the future

    • Chris says:

Franklin was actually pretty good in the playoffs remember. I think he'll be fine.
