Playing A Little Pepper

Here is a chart I made for my real job. The biggest point for Rays fans is that there are 11 teams with bigger fan base problems than the Rays. The number is probably 12 in reality as the Astros data was not available. The strength comes from the TV side. Of the 27 teams with data available, the Rays rank 13th with an average of 79,000 households tuning into games just in the Tampa-St. Pete area. That does not include Orlando and I don’t think that includes Polk county. Read more about the chart here.

Cork, I don't understand the graph. I currently hate Red Sox fans more than Yankee fans, but according to what you posted it looks as though I should hate the Yankees and their fans the most.

Why/how would the number of people watching relate to your disdain for a certain team?

  2. Lane Meyer says:

I would like to see these numbers compared as a % of total market size including the number of TV households in their entire local viewing area. For example if 100,000 of 3 million + potential viewers watch the Rays on Fox in Florida and 200,000 of a possible 6 million + (maybe more) viewers watch the Red Sox on NESN in New England, the % of people watching per the market size would be similar.

In other words 1 out of 30 people are watching the game in their home market on average. This would tell us whether the Rays are doing better or worse per capita than other markets. MLB can't expect smaller markets to support their team as a greater % than larger markets, especially those with decades of history in the market.

funny how when the rays where in contention , first place etc. the national media and our own (don't understand that one) kept hammering the fans here for not showing up to the games, as i watched yesterdays game i couldn't believe all the empty seats for the best team in baseball (sarcasm) especially for an area with greater population than this area. I really don't understand the fascination with attendance in this area , i have been here since 1986 and it has always been the same, i remember when the other teams fans came out more than the buc fans, and that was all you heard about on the radio, aaaaaa and here i am complaining about it, lol , go rays.
