photo (1)There is a lengthy article in this week’s Sports Illustrated on Wil Myers, the top prospect acquired by the Rays in the James Shields/Wade Davis trade. The story spends a lot of discussing his career from high school to being a top prospect, including the injury that caused him to struggle in 2011. It was an injury he calls “the best thing to ever happen to me.” The story also refers to a text message Myers received from Evan Longoria following the trade…

“Just wanted to let you know that we’re happy to have you and I will do everything in my power to make u feel at home. See you soon bro.”

Beyond that, there was one other thing that stood out to me in the story (something I am sure many of you have already noticed). Myers doesn’t use batting gloves. How rare is that? With the retirements of Vlad Guerrero and Jorge Posada, Coco Crisp may be the only full-time position player in the big leagues that goes gloveless when he is hitting. Here’s Myers in a photo from this past August…

Finally, here’s one final shot from SI with Myers in some Rays gear…

  1. Jeff says:

Amazing that we got this guy. Andrew is the best.

  2. Rob says:

He really does look like Dale Murphy.

  3. Paul says:

I'm still pissed at Dayton Moore for giving up 7 years of this guy. He could have completed a fearsome, low cost lineup in KC for many years. Sure, Shields will improve the rotation a lot but why not go after a free agent (for roughly the same pay) and keep Myers. KC has to make the playoffs in the next 2 years or this will be the worst trade in Royals history.

  4. Alex says:

No batting gloves? High pants/stirrups? This guy is awesome already

  5. Joe says:

I think it just makes too much sense to long term Myers, look how cheap Evan and Moore were to sign and that way, we don't have to wait til June for his bat because we are probably going to be starting Fuld and/or Roberts and they are good to pinch hit or maybe pinch run in Fuld's case.

  6. Ricky C says:

I'm pretty sure Hunter Pence doesn't use batting gloves
