The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS 8, A’s 0 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: James the Greater. After having 11 complete games and 4 shutouts in 2011. And just hours after the trade deadline passed. James Shields went out and tossed his first shutout of the year, and had easily his best start of the year. In fact, with a Game Score of 92 (measures how strong a pitcher’s performance was), Shields had the 10th best pitching performance in all baseball this year. Yeah, I bet there are teams have second thoughts on the trade deadline…BJ Upton. One night after posting the first 0-7 game in Rays history, Upton rebounded with 2 hits, and drove in the first run of the night.

THE BAD: Carlos Pena. Hitless in 3 at bats and is now hitting .195. And yes, he draws a lot of walks. But considering he doesn’t get hits, his OBP is still only .320 which is below average.

THE TELLING: Brooks Conrad was optioned to Durham and replaced by Josh Lueke. After the 15-inning marathon, the Rays needed an extra bullpen arm…The Rays are 54-50, 2.5 games behind the A’s in the Wild Card race, 1 game behind the Orioles, and tied with the Tigers.

  • If you missed it last night, Evan Longoria is “sore” and did not play last night, meaning he won’t be back with the Rays this weekend. This is definitely a setback. The only question is how big of a setback. []
  • The Rays set a number of club records during their 15-inning marathon. []
  • We told you recently that Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan, who has been the most vocal politician in the Rays stadium debate, wanted to know if legally, the Rays can talk to Hillsborough County. Well, a lawyer for the county looked into and says it is OK to talk. Of course, this doesn’t mean it will happen. []
  • Joe Maddon talks about how strong the bullpen has been. []
  • Cesar Ramos is looking like a solid starting pitcher all of a sudden. [WDBB]

  1. Beth says:

A performance like Shields' is such a joy to watch -- even at midnight. Let's hear it for a rare occurrence in baseball - the "no walker!"

  2. Charles says:

I asked Keppinger on Twitter what his best pitch was, since he was probably going to come in to pitch if the game had gone much longer. He answered "#STRIKES#"

  3. tampafan26 says:

Random question: Anyone know why they haven't worn their road grays that much? I've seen them in the blue road unis most nights (on the road).

    • Amanda says:

I don't know if this is the right answer, but an educated guess: They said on the broadcast the other day that they had a pretty decent record when they wear their blue unis. I don't know if that's a coincidence that they started wearing them more or not, but baseball players are pretty supersticious.

    • Gus says:

They usually switch after a loss. Gray lost Monday night, so dark blue was back.

I actually think the light blue with gray pants would be the best looking road combination, but they are saving that for home Sundays only so far.

  4. Beazy says:

Well, good bye July, we’re now undefeated in the month of August, big up’s to “complete game” James, and I would like to say the same to the batters, but that’s the way we should be batting. Let’s finish the K’s, I mean A’s off, and come back home only 2-1/2 out w/ 57 to go, and the easiest month of opponents of the season ahead of us…

  5. Joe says:

Man, oh man, I don't know what Ramos said to himself but it was awesome.

All the sudden Cobb doesn't have to worry about Archer taking his spot, he should worry more about Ramos...

I'm of the belief that Niemann is a September call up for the bullpen.
