Playing A Little Pepper

Leslie Anderson is 3rd in hitting in the IL, and Henry Wrigley would be in the top 15 if he had enough at bats. Clearly the Rays need offense and both can DH or play 1B. So why weren’t they called up along with Reid Brignac and the others?

The simple answer is that they are not on the 40-man roster. But MLB transaction rules are like the tax code, so let me try to explain. For those not familiar: teams have a 25-man roster (the guys we see every night) and a 40-man roster (the 25-man roster plus 15 others that are usually minor leaguers). To be in the big leagues, you have to be on the 40-man roster. There can be up to 15 guys in the minors on the 40-man roster and these guys are kinda like backups. So if somebody on the Rays gets hurt, one of those would be called up to take his place. And in September, anybody on the 40-man can be called up.

Anybody in the minors can be added to the 40-man roster. BUT, if there is already 40 guys, somebody must be taken off. And to do that, that player must be placed on waivers. This is where it gets complicated for guys like Anderson and Wrigley who are not on the 40-man roster. Calling up guys like Brignac is easy. He is already on the 40-man roster, so in September, just promote him. But for Anderson or Wrigley, the Rays would have to risk losing a player to waivers. So it is more like making a trade. And the Rays hate losing pieces if they don’t have to. So at this point, it looks like the Rays have decided that there is nobody already on the 40-man roster that is worth losing for what might end up being 50 at bats from either Anderson or Wrigley. Is that the right decision? I don’t know. But that does appear to be the decision they have made…A NUMBERS GAME AND THEY LOST

Ok if we put Leslie or Wrigley on the 40 man, we basically need to either move Pena or Scott on waivers. And hey they may clear waivers but you cant just send them down right? But even if you can lets look at the Int'l numbers closer.

Anderson is 3rd in average? Guess whos fourth? That cant miss prospect our very own Rich Thompson.

Whos 3rd in OPS and second in RBI? The Great Pumpkin.

Vogt was tearing up AAA we brought him up he went 0-fer his tenure.

September AL Penant race pitching is like another universe compared to AAA.

Expect those two to get a legit shot in Spring training next year. DH and 1st are wide open in 2013.

If they were middle infielders they would already have been here but they arent unfortunately.

  2. Andy says:

Say What?? We have enough middle infielders to enter the in a Rowing M8+!!! We need some legitimate prospects who can play 1B or DH & not cost a bundle for limited production! If we're gonna seriously consider either or both of these guys next year, then isn't it worth it to get a glimpse of this now? Yeah, AAA stats don't necessarily transfer, but I've heard/read the team use them to justify bringing Briggy back, who's already proven he can't handle MLB pitching!!

Do the Rays seriously believe guys like Albert Suarez, Josh Lueke, or Wilking Rodriguez wouldn't get thru waivers? Or, even Steven Vogt, who was 0 for how many when he was on the team in early part of season??

If this were real reason, then why is Ben Francisco worth taking a risk for & Anderson/Wrigley not?!! Smells like something's rotten in the state of Raysland!!

    • Chris r says:

Looks like something is ROTTEN IN RAYSLAND!!!

To not waive Brignac or Pena off RAYS roster when he is now only a 9th inning defense guy to get a look at Leslie Anderson the possible future!!!

Serious Brignac and Pena are the PAST seen that / been there done that!!!

Give us FREAKING !!! Leslie Anderson!!! He must think Fidel Castro moved to Rays front office in St. Petersburg when he thought he left that sh*t behide in CUBA 3 yrs back.

Come on Maddon give the FANS Leslie Anderson with Keppinger!!! What was the point of keeping L Anderson in Durham and having him hit 3rd for Average in the International League AAA. Should've traded for a future prospect if were planning to waste him all along and gave WRIGLEY more looks at 1st in Durham if L A wasn't going get a look in TAMPA!!!!

Feels like a missed opporunity again like Hamiliton who went on to rack currently with Rangers when we had him 3 yrs before and didn't give look in favor of UPTON and Zobrist but as good as they are we missed seeing what HAMILITON WAS!!!
