Playing A Little Pepper

The Rays seem to have a crapload of not-quite-good-enough shortstops on either the big league roster or the triple-A roster. Who will be the starting shortstop in 2012?

The Rays like to be strong up the middle, with a priority on defense. And as I have mentioned before, I don’t see Ben Zobrist as a long-term solution. Reid Brignac hasn’t shown any improvement offensively since his demotion. Tim Beckham just is not going to be an everyday big league shortstop at this point unless something drastically changes. Sean Rodriguez will get another shot as part of a platoon. That leaves Hak-Ju Lee, but he is still a year away. So look for the Rays to go out and sign a left-handed hitting middle infielder, who will serve as a stop-gap until Lee is ready, and who will hit just well enough to frustrate Rays fans…SEAN RODRIGUEZ AND ???
