Playing A Little Pepper

The Rays have made up 7.5 games on the Yankees in just a little over one month and are now just 3 back in the division. Can the Rays catch the Yankees?

The biggest thing working against the Rays is that 22 of the next 26 games are against playoff teams or teams the Rays are directly competing with for the playoffs. That means there is no room for let-ups. And of course, there are still 6 huge games against the Yankees. If the Yankees go 19-19 down the stretch, including 3-3 against the Rays, the Rays would still have to go 19-13 in their non-Yankees games just to tie. Winning 4 against the Yankees makes things easier. But will they?…DOABLE, BUT 3 GAMES IS A LOT THIS TIME OF YEAR

Regardless of what the rotation dictates today and I haven't extrapolated it, I will guarantee this-

In six games against the Yanks, Price will start 2 and Sheilds 2

Helli and Probably Matt in the other 2.

If a temporary 6 man rotation achieves that, then look for it.

If winning the division entails the Yanks going .500 the rest of the season, well, our chances ain't good.

I still maintain it will take maintaining our torrid pace and 25 to 27 W's to take the East crown. Its possible for sure.

But we win 19 of 32 and we host the inaugural MLB Wild Card game IMO-- which isn't a bad consolation prize.

wish there was a way to get sammy in w/out eliminating desmond.

    • Allen says:

There is a way. Eliminate Scott from DH and do some combo of Jennings, Super Sam and Joyce in LF, RF, DH. The 34 yr old Scott is hitting a very weak .226 and has struck out 60 times in just 248 ABs.

  3. Rob says:

So, if the Rays win tonight, it is only a 2.5 game difference and catching them doesn't look so daunting. If that happens again on Friday and the Yankees lose, catching them becomes a high probability being only 1.5 games out. If the reverse of that happens, 4.5 games out doesn't look promising.

I think at this point the conversation and outlook could change on a daily basis. By the end of Friday night we could be saying the Yankees have to go 19-18 and we have to go 20-16 (assuming we win the tiebreaker if we split our last 6 games with them). I think this would be totally possible.

Goes to show just how much things can change for a team in one month.
