As expected, Sean Rodriguez has been optioned to triple-A to make room for Luke Scott who will be activated later today. Hot Rod should be back in 11 days when rosters expand, but the Rays have not confirmed that yet.

Rodriguez is hitting just .215 with six home runs and a .271 wOBA. He became expendable when Joe Maddon moved Ben Zobrist to shortstop.

I know Roberts would have to clear waivers so they dont want to risk him.

The only other option would be Elliot. SRod has been pretty cold all year but since the break, his OPS is .130+ points higher even than EJ.

Does he have any options left? For me they are still a wash in the field, neither has distinguished himself.

I dont have a problem losing the cubano for 10 days, I am just saying the case can be made.

Just look at EJ's stats since the the Allstar break they are horrible, remember how he was flirting with .300? no longer. Maybe they prefer his defense or that we need a LHB with the current mix.

EJ has no more options, they'd have to place him on waivers.

Given how close they are to the September 1 expansion I think they are making the right move.

However, I felt as though Elliot last night were trying to get demoted. Yes, the two hits were nice but why can't he throw the ball to first base?

  2. Dave L says:

Ok I wasnt sure, so yeah its a moot point like with Roberts.

Its a pretty insigificant loss for 8 games or whatever, no doubt.

    • Cork Gaines says:

Agreed. Also consider that the Rays won't even have to use an option on Rodriguez since he will be in the minors less than 20 days. So he will still have an option next year should the need arise.
