Playing A Little Pepper

Rumors are starting to pick and James Shields name is getting the most mentions early on. At this point, what are the chances he is traded before opening day 2013?

I would not be surprised if the Rays trade a starting pitcher this winter, but I also don’t think it is a given like it was with Edwin Jackson, Matt Garza, James Jason Hammel, and Scott Kazmir. And while $9 million is more than the Rays would like to spend on one player it is still a good price for what Shields does. Right now, my gut says less than 50% chance he is traded. And it is always possible somebody else goes…LET’S SAY 25%

  1. BJ Upton, CF
  2. Carlos Pena, 1B
  3. Ben Zobrist, 2B
  4. Matt Joyce, RF
  5. Jeff Keppinger, 3B
  6. Luke Scott, DH
  7. Flash Jennings, LF
  8. Jose Lobaton, C
  9. Elliot Johnson, SS
  10. Jeremy Hellickson, SP

ALso, I think for budget reasons and to make room for other starters, Shields makes the most sense to trade as they would also get the biggest haul. They need to get at least a near MLB ready SS or catcher and a long reliever. I wish they would pull the trigger now with Shields and Upton and try to obtain Desmond and Detwiler from the Nats. It would give us an everyday SS and a long reliever and allow Davis to return to the rotation.
