Playing A Little Pepper

There’s a crazy rumor that the Los Angeles Angels want James Shields and Ben Zobrist in exchange for 2B Howie Kendrick (.275, 5 HR, .297 wOBA), rookie starting pitcher Garrett Richards (3-1, 3.53 ERA, 4.98 FIP), and double-A pitching prospect John Hellweg 5-9, 3.12 ERA, 4.22 FIP). On the crazy scale, with 1 being Dewayne Staats crazy and 10 being Jonny Gomes crazy, where does this rumor rank?

It’s up there. Would I be surprised the Rays would trade Shields? No. Would I be surprised the Rays would trade Ben Zobrist? A little bit. Would I be surprised if the Rays traded two core players in one deal? A lot. But the Rays would be getting what they covet most, young pitching talent with high upside. Two of them. And one is big league ready. Still, this one seems more like the Angels talking and wishing and less like something the Rays would actually do. In fact, Joe Maddon and Andrew Friedman had a “guffaw over it” when they heard the rumorBRIAN ANDERSON CRAZY (8)

  1. phil says:

we will keep Zobrist,,,how about Shields for Conger; Cron and Garrett Richards?

  2. Jason says:

We don't need to trade pitching for pitching and i don't think the Rays are looking to deal Zobrist. If we are going to be getting rid of some of the core team players like Shields and Upton, we need quality (not Pat Burrell like) bats and a strong catcher.
