We are starting to learn more about the fallout from Ken “Hawk” Harrelson’s on-air, anti-umpire rant (VIDEO CAN BE SEEN HERE). And it sounds like the folks in the league’s office aren’t too happy with Hawk (via ESPN Chicago)…

“I talked to Bud Selig yesterday,” Harrelson told ESPNChicago.com’s Bruce Levine on Friday morning. “We had a talk. Actually, Bud talked and I listened. If it was a prize fight, they would have stopped it in the first round…I also talked to [White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf], and I listened to him as well. That’s all I really have to say.”

Sounds like Hawk got a bit of a lecture on how to treat the umpires and how not to tell Major League Baseball how to do their job.

In the original rant, Harrelson said that Wegner “knows nothing about the game of baseball,” demanding that he be suspended and “if [Major League Baseball] wants to keep him as an umpire, send him back to school and teach him what the game of baseball is about.”

Hawk later added that there are some umpires “that have no business umpiring because they have no idea what the game of baseball is about.”

In separate interview, Harrelson added that he was so upset during the game that he got a terrible headache that lasted into the next day (via BI Sports)…

“First of all I still have a headache because I got so upset yesterday. I took four Advil after that inning was over and then I had to take four more on the plane and then when I got home last night I had to take four more. Also when I got up this morning I had to take four more…”

So did we Hawk. So did we.

Hawk must be going senile! For him to not get that the HBP on Piehead was for the previous game and ended that situation is ludicrous. Quintero throwing behind Zobrist only starts a new issue. To assist the umpires, either get replay or get rid of these FoxTrax that let EVERYONE know the umpire missed a borderline pitch.

  2. Pinto says:

I'm sure Hawk would have reacted the exact same way if the tables were turned and a Rays pitcher threw behind a White Sox batter and got tossed from the game. Yep, of course he would...

This is a comment from a poster on fangraphs when they ranked each MLB broadcast team:

"Hawk Harrelson is the worst person in the world at his job. By that I mean, you won’t find a carptenter who is as bad at being a carpenter as Hawk is at his job. If I were as bad at my job (assistant manager at a restaurant) as Hawk is at his, I’d have to take a shit on everyone’s plate before they ate. That’s what he does. He shits on your plate of baseball."

Sorry off topic but I have been thinking about this Tom Jones situation.

I never even heard of the guy, frankly.

Then the links to his the Rays being the 'worst franchises to own'. Now suddenly he is all over DAE the flagship Rays station.

Tagging it the 'worst' I am sure had the blessings of ownership here in advance. Note of all the franchises discussed, it was the one where the fan base and general community was entirely to blame and ownership was the poor victim. The other bad teams to own cited were partly to blame on the ownership. Probably before penning it he was given an audience, fed some fine Chardonnay to go along with the sob story about the poor owners 'losing money'.

Losing money in pro sports doesnt mean losing to the rest of us, it means not making it hand over fist like the Steinbrenners etc.

Right now its raining cats and dogs here in Venice. In about an hour we are driving to the Trop to watch the game. I could care less about the weather or and dont have to worry about spending $25 in gas for a game that may be rained out.

People not from here who think the Trop sucks are idiots and ignorant but they can be understood and forgiven.

Local toady suck ups like Tom Jones who give them untrue fodder are vile and despicable.

    • Tom says:

He wrote a similar column in 2010 stating Buccanears fans were horrible because they were not selling out Raymond James during their 10 Win season. He is a schill and is only trying to get other Web Sites to link to his column. Consider yourself lucky you have never wasted any of your life reading any of his columns.

      • Dave L says:

Yeah ever since they stopped delivering Tampa or St Pete papers down here I havent bothered to follow my local beat writers online since then as they seem to be the least knowledgable and have the most biases. They spend too much time with this player or that coach or owner and develop thier own biases depending on what BS they feed them then they proudly pass it off as 'knowledge'.

the national media seem to have usually an overall disdain for this area as being bush league but they spread it fairly evenly so i follow them more.

MLB network especially is the best network in the history of sports.

    • Burn H. says:

Right on!!!! having lived down here for 27 years to drive any distance to be rained out wouldn't happen. The Trop isn't bad compared to the 4.5 Billion that the Miami folks will be paying for there dome.. to bad it's on the wrong side of the bay... But it was there when the Owners bought the team.
