The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Twins 5, RAYS 4 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Matt Moore’s New Fastball. It appeared that Moore unleashed a new weapon last night, a 2-seam fastball. Moore already has a lot of natural movement on his standard fastball, typically moving 9-10 inches horizontally. But last night PitchF/X had Moore throwing 20 two-seamers that averaged 13 inches of horizontal movement. It is hard to tell if this will be a regular weapon (it does not appear that Moore threw any two-seamers in his first 2 starts). But if it is, he will need to learn to control it. If Moore had a problem last night, it was that his fastball at times had too much movement. Pitches aimed inside were ending up out over the plate…Carlos Pena’s Golden Glove. You can see the play at the bottom of this post (click on Read More…), but ‘Los was being ‘Los last night when he dove into foul territory to snag a line drive and possibly save an extra-base hit.

THE BAD: On Closer Inspection. Carlos Pena was safe on his run-scoring double-play in the 6th inning. At the time it didn’t seem like to big of a deal since the DP tied the game, and Evan Longoria followed with a 2-run home run to put the Rays up. But in the end, that out, and that extra run that didn’t score on Longo’s home run were huge…How Not To Catch A Home Run. See the GIF at the bottom of this post.

THE TELLING: The Rays, Yankees, Orioles, and Blue Jays are all within 1 game of each other…Jose Lobaton’s injury turned out to not be serious. He is expected to begin throwing in a couple of days…Prior to the game, Joe Maddon received his Manager of the Year Award, and Jeremy Hellickson received his Rookie of the Year Award…Brandon Guyer had 5 hits including a triple and his 3rd home run of the season for the Durham Bulls last night.

  • As expected, Stephen Vogt was demoted prior to the game and replaced by BJ Upton. And after the game, Reid Brignac was demoted and replaced by Brandon Allen.

It was just a tough 1 run game.

Moore had too many pitches where the strike zone was never even in danger of being entered.

One nice stat was that the 5 hits tied our season low i heard during the telecast.

Nice in the fact that usually by now some 4th or 5th starter will usually baffle us with his offspeed junk and 2 or three hit us or God forbid worse. I think our lineup is somewhat more mature so that wont happen as much as the last couple of years.

Our bats were hammering the ball, they just werent finding holes.

That leaves me cautiously optimistic going forward. We finished the brutal road trip and our starting pitching has been mediocre and we are at .500 so I will take it.
