So far this week, we have heard that Joe Maddon is a “popular candidate” to replace Tony LaRussa in St. Louis, and that Maddon is on the Cardinals’ “short-list.

But now, Joe Strauss of the St. Louis post-Dispatch says the Cardinals will not pursue Maddon to be their next manager…

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon, the popular choice among a segment of the organization as well as a large swatch of the fan base, apparently is not in play. Multiple sources said Wednesday the Cardinals had not sought permission from the Rays to interview Maddon, who remains under contract through next season and is expected to sign an extension prior to spring training.

Strauss also took to Twitter with a bit of a rant against the local media’s infatuation with Maddon…

I’ll give you this much: Local broadcast media’s arousal over Maddon will have to be addressed in private. It ain’t happening. #Kleenex

Hopefully this was sarcasm on the part of Strauss. Because, it appeared that Strauss was the writer that originally sparked the fire by calling Maddon a “popular candidate.”
