Back in December, 2003, Joe Maddon was a finalist for the managerial job of the Boston Red Sox. That job would eventually go to Terry Francona, who was endorsed by Curt Schilling, whom the Red Sox had just received in a trade with the Diamondbacks.

Of course, two years after the Red Sox job went to Francona, Maddon was hired by the Devil Rays, and as they say, the rest is history. Francona did go on to lead the Red Sox to two World Series titles. But now, two years removed from their last playoff appearance, and following one of the worst collapses in big league history, Francona is out as a manager. Meanwhile, the miracle Rays are in the playoffs for the third time in four years.

Of course, none of this is breaking news. But it is fun to look at the current state of both franchises, and look back and see just how differently this could have ended up for both.
