The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: JoeMa. Sometime in May of next season, Joe Maddon will win his 518th game as manager of the Rays. That will give him exactly half of all wins in franchise history. Maddon will accomplish this in a little over 6 seasons as manager and in the 15th season in team history.

THE BAD: (the Bad is taking the day off)

THE TELLING: The Rays now trail the Red Sox by 6.5 games in the Wild Card. More importantly, they only trail by 6 in the loss column. Even with a sweep this weekend, Rays will still need a miracle. But consider our eyebrow raised until the Rays lose a game…Jose Lobaton is expected to be able to catch tonight…With 1 more HR from BJ Upton, he and Justin Upton will be first siblings to go 20-20 (HR and SB) in same season.

  1. Charles says:

As Patrick Swayze sang, I'm just a fool to believe, but I can't yet convince myself that there's not shot. Beckett is not pitching in this series - the current Sox probables are Lackey, Kyle Weiland, and Lester vs. Big Dub, Hellboy & Juego G. That set of matchups gives me hope that a sweep is possible. Anything less than a sweep and I'll be ready to give up - until next weekend when they come to Fenway and my optimism is rekindled.

  2. Chris says:

Not related to this article but since it will come up sometime this weekend (not selling out the Boston series)...did anyone see the highlights of the Diamondbacks game last night? Let's just say - good seats still available.

  3. Gus says:

Isn't 6 games about the number of games the Rays had the Manny Cloud over their heads? Remember -- he disappeared the day of the Rays dress rehersal game at the Trop on the final day of spring trianing; the clubhouse obviously knew he popped a positive. That was a real distraction. A desperation signing that should have never been made.

Still, you have to like the pitching matchups . . .
