Last week we were a little perplexed as to why the Rays would feature a throwback jersey for the Tampa Smokers, but leave off the cigar that appeared on the original jersey. Well, Keith Morelli of the Tampa Tribune provides us with the official statement from the Rays in all its PC glory…

“We have chosen to wear the Smokers jersey to celebrate the rich heritage and traditions surrounding baseball in Tampa Bay and this version of the logo is intended only to be a slightly more contemporary version of that wonderful history.”

So there you go. The Rays want to Turn-Back-The-Clock with a contemporary interpretation of a classic design.

In other words, let’s turn back the clocks, to the 1950s. But only if the 1950s had actually been the 2010s when local organizations celebrate a heritage without actually acknowledging that heritage, because, you know, that heritage is bad, bad, bad.

Our heads are spinning.
