The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Jeremy Hellickson. In his last 5 starts, Hellboy has allowed just 5 runs in 33 innings (1.36 ERA)…John Jaso. JJ Dyn-O-Mite’s 2-run home run was his 3rd of the year and put the game out of reach…Evan Longoria. Two more hits, two walks and it might be safe to say that Longoria is out of his funk…BJ Upton. Three walks and his 10th stolen base.

THE BAD: Casey Kotchman. Kotchman sprained an ankle sliding into second base. He was pulled from the game and is day-to-day. Look for Felipe Lopez to start at first base today. Yay.

THE TELLING: Evan Longoria led off for the second straight day.

  • Here is the official statement from the Rays on Avril Lavigne’s profanity incident. [The Heater]

  1. Tone says:

If Kotchman goes on the DL I hope they go with Leslie Anderson. His average vs lefties is actually really good and he has been on a tear lately. I think I'm alone as far as Rays fans go in wanting to see him. I like his upside better than Lopez or Johnson. Canzler could be a good option, but I think Anderson's glove is be better at 1st and he can play outfield too. In fact, even if Kotch is just day to day, I hope they just get Anderson up and have a look. If he sucks then watch him clear waivers again because no one wants to pay him the million owed. I hope Lopez hits the cover off the ball, but I see no signs so far. I will make the #FreeAnderson call solo.

    • Beth says:

Tone, you are not alone. I've always been puzzled by the Rays' handling of Anderson. They spent some money to sign him; he's seemed to have been productive in the minors, but he's never high on any call up lists or seen as having a shot at making the team in the spring. Is there some gaping hole in his game that isn't apparent to those of us observing from afar? If not, he seems well placed to serve as the back-up first baseman. Is he really less appealing than Lopez?

      • KillaTapes says:

I'm with you guys- I too have been perplexed by the Anderson situation. Why pay him the millions we payed him and then not give him a shot, he's performed well at every level so why not give him a try? And he's versatile, which I would think Maddon would really like.

Maybe someone else can give some explanation?

        • Alex says:

Because he's mediocre. Look at his numbers. A .769 OPS in two seasons. More strike outs than walks. He was also awful this spring. They will not bring him up. He's 29, has a .266 avg, a .300 obp and a .696 ops. Its a good thing you guys/girls don't work in the front office. Sometimes the rays will miss with guys. This is one of those times.

The more important question is, how long do we have to endure Shoppach until Lobaton gets a shot.
