Want to know just how valuable Evan Longoria and his contract are to the Rays, then read THIS PIECE from The Orange County Register. Sam Miller takes an even-handed look at what it might take for the Angels to trade for Longoria.

The conclusion:

“Mike Trout, Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, Peter Bourjos, Garrett Richards and Fabio Martinez Mesa for Longoria probably would be fair”

Which of course neither team would ever do. Still, wow.

  • The Rays avoided arbitration with Andy Sonnanstine with a one-year, $912,500 deal. We had The Duke projected at $1.5 million. We probably gave him a little too much credit for still being a starting pitcher of sorts. [TampaBay.com]
  • Grant Balfour sounded very appreciative of his time in Tampa Bay. [Rays Report]
  • Evan Longoria made an appearance on Fox Sports Radio and he talked about his road to the big leagues and what it was like to get drafted by the Rays. [Sports Radio Interviews]
  • Rafael Soriano will be introduced to the New York media today. Somebody will ask him about the reported “hissy fit” in Game 5 of the ALDS. [ESPN New York]
  • Evan Longoria will make his annual appearance in the Bob Hope Classic this week. [Bob Hope Classic]

More money saved on Sonny....No one to spend it on!

  2. Beth says:

Thanks to Grant for a classy hat-tip to the Tampa Bay area.

  3. Don says:

Another $1mil down the toilet...the Rays probably have 5-10 minor league pitcher better than Sorranstine right now....I'd would rather see the kids.......

  4. Gus says:

Can the Rays send Sonny to the minors or is he out of options? The best case for him is if his career follows Jamie Moyer at this point -- if he can figure it out before he gets thrown out of baseball (like Moyer), he'll pitch for 20 seasons. Butt if I had to bet, I'd say he'll not make it. I'm rooting for him, just on an extremely short leash at the big league level. He would have been better off in Durham last season mastering his craft.

  5. Gus says:

One more on Longo: Why is it not discussed that Longo's contract be upgraded. He's outperformed his deal; he's still under control for 4 more seasons. When the payroll is comically low, why not upgrade him and buy some good will that way.

    • Derek says:

How much do you think that will help? Now and in the future. We lose money today that we could have used to make the team better, and we gain nothing later.

    • Don says:

Just to see what you know..How much $ do you think Longo will make in his 1st 7 years in BASEBALL...????
Also, how much do you think most prospects make in their first 3 or 4yrs...with not guarantees of a contract...while playing for peanuts..
Just give me a couple of guesses:
