Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated had the following to say about Pat Burrell during a segment on WFAN 660 AM in New York (via Twitter)…

“Nobody likes him. You can go up to interview him and say, ‘Do you have a few minutes?’ and he’ll ignore you and pretend you’re not there.”

When we checked with a couple of people close to the Rays, they confirmed that this description was indeed accurate.

Which leads us to this question: How the H-E-Double Hockey Sticks did the Rays ever let this guy anywhere near their clubhouse? As much as Joe Maddon values a close-knit group that is not afraid to have fun from time-to-time, everything we have ever heard about Burrell is that he is just a prickly bastard.

  1. Rob says:

He's buddies with Aubrey Huff. 'nuff said.

  2. He did an interview with MLB Network yesterday and said that he struggled with the Rays because he couldn't play the field. They even showed a montage of him striking out repeatedly. I really hope Soriano strikes him out to end the World Series.

    • Beth says:

Except in that scenario he actually gets to the World Series. It kills me that he's collecting a postseason bonus on top of the $8 million the Rays need to pay him.

The Rays broke most of their usual rules to sign him -- expensive free agent possibly past his prime, and a jerk to boot.

  3. Don says:

Whens the last time you actually saw CC mad at another player...I've only seen it twice in 10 years..and that was with players on other teams..
BUT he wanted to kick Burrell's ass one day in the clubhouse...word is... Burrell backed down like a mouse...good thinking!

  4. Beth says:

And really, do we have any proof that the groupies like him? Any rumors about him in that regard, I'll assume he spread himself.

  5. Ragin Rick says:

The one time I met him at a charity golf tournament in 2005, he was so rude and snide that my father in law wanted to fight him. Wasn't asking for an autograph, just wanted to say hi.

  6. All you haters would be treated a lot better by Burrell if you simply learned how to pronounce his name correctly. Its Pat rhymes with cat, Burrell rhymes with squirrel. He has a nice dog and wife.
