[Update 10:55pm] The Rays not only did not non-tender Dioner Navarro, they reached an agreement with Navi on a 1-year, $2.1 million contract. They also non-tendered Shawn Riggans making him a free agent. Signing Navarro is a bit of a surprise, but this could just be buying the Rays time to trade him.

[10:30 pm] Marc Topkin is reporting that the Rays have non-tendered Gabe Gross, making him a free agent. No decision has been announced on Dioner Navarro.

Also, the Rays avoided arbitration with Randy Choate and Lance Cormier. Choate will make $700K  this season while Cormier will make $1.2 million.

These moves leave the Rays with six arbitration-eligible players including BJ Upton, Jason Bartlett, Matt Garza, Kelly Shoppach, Grant Balfour and JP Howell.

In addition, the Rays re-signed Winston Abreu and Carlos Hernandez to minor league deals. Abreu made three appearances with the Rays last season. He struck out 77 in 51 innings with a 1.94 ERA at triple-A Durham. Hernandez went 7-6 with a 3.29 ERA in 21 starts for Durham.

And in the ex-Rays department, Jonny Gomes has been non-tendered by the Reds and is now a free agent.

  1. John says:

$2.1 is very reasonable for a starting-ish catcher. Somebody should be willing to take him off our hands for that, right?

    • JD says:

definitely. The Royals just gave Jason Kendall 6 mill for 2 years. He was worth 2.6 wins the last 2 years combined. Navarro was worth more than that in 2008 (2.7). He was awful last year, but he is young (25, i think?).

  2. From exec VP Andrew Friedman: "I feel like we're a better team with both then with one guy and another guy on the market.''

How about one guy and another guy on another team? or one guy and another guy in the minors?

  3. Don says:

How the hell can they let Zaun go... because he wanted $2mil.???
and then go ahead and sign fat boy for $2mil.....A blind man can see that Zaun was a much better hitter... and catcher! (don't care about his age...only need him for about half of the games)
Am I missing something to explain this stupid move?

Poor Aki...in case anyone missed it see the St. Pete Times today (Sun)
for his full page ad.....a class guy who lost his job to injury and Zo ($400,000) taking over!
I'll remember him as our 2nd baseman and leadoff hitter the year we won the AL east....how fast all that changes....Good Luck Aki...you are CLASS!

  4. Sam A says:

1.2 is a little steep for Cormier. I thought he was worth bringing back, but the bullpen is getting expensive (again) real fast.

$4.5mil is too much for that platoon at catcher. Hopefully they can swing a trade for one of them. (Please let it be Navi.) Poor production aside, Navi just looked lazy out there.

  5. Matt says:

I bet Lobation and Jaso could do a lot better than navarro. I'm glad they cut ties with Shawn Riggans though, he was never great
