[HAPPY HOUR] Big Dub To The DL And Big Dog’s Unexpected Seatmate

Brandon Gomes, Vince Naimoli, Wade Davis 10 Comments »

Here are a couple of items that can’t wait until tomorrow morning…

WADE DAVIS TO THE DL

The Rays have announced that Wade Davis has been placed on the DL with a “forearm strain.” He has been replaced on the roster by reliever Brandon Gomes.

This move is more of a roster shakeup as Davis wouldn’t be needed again for about 10-11 days as Joe Maddon will likely shuffle the rotation coming out of the break. So look for Alex Cobb to be called up for one start out of the break.

BIG DOG AND BIG VINCE

Also, wanted to pass along this note from Steve “Big Dog” Duemig, who took a flight today to New York to start a vacation

Of all the people to sit next to on a flight to NY. U would never guess in a million years!! Wait for it ……vince freaking Namoili !!!! Arrgggg!!!!!bending my ear already!!!

There is a very real chance that one or both of those guys will be escorted off the plane in handcuffs.

Naimoli Book Signing In St. Pete Went About As Well As You Would Expect

Vince Naimoli 7 Comments »

With the Rays about to earn their second postseason trip in three years, it is difficult to muster up animosity for the man that ran the ship during a decade of futility. Of course, when Rays fans hated Vince Naimoli, they at least cared enough to pay attention. Now? Not so much.

Prior to Monday’s game at The Trop, Naimoli was mere blocks from the stadium, at a book store signing copies of his memoir. Well, we should say he signed A copy

For more than an hour, he sat at that table, talking to store workers, answering customers’ questions. Hardly anyone asked about him. A half-dozen people asked about the Rays…Three hours before the first pitch, Naimoli had signed one book for a man named Lou.

It may surprise many to know that Read the rest of this entry »

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Typical Hellboy, Playoff Chances And Naimoli’s Next Move

THE GOOD: Ho Hum Hellboy. Another brilliant start for Jeremy Hellickson. His fastball did not have the same pinpoint control as only 28 of 47 were thrown for strikes. But the changeup and curve were great. He got 6 swinging strikes on changeups and another 2 on the curveball. And in the end, it was 1 run on 3 hits. He struck out 5 and walked 1…Rafael Soriano. MFIKY hasn’t been his normal dominating self in the second-half. And the last thing in the world the Rays needed at this point was a blown 9th inning lead to the Orioles. Soriano came in and sat the O’s down 1-2-3 to close out the game…Carl Crawford. Three more hits, including his 13th home run to get the Rays off to a good start in the first.

THE BAD: Young Arms.Jeremy Hellickson might only make one more start before the injured pitchers return. But is there any doubt that Hellickson is one of the Rays 2 or 3 best starting pitchers right now?

THE TELLING: Carlos Pena is expected to be back in the lineup tonight…According to CoolStandings.com the Rays have an 85.9% chance of making the playoffs. The Red Sox are at 15.3%…If the Rays go 23-22 in their final 45 games, the Red Sox would have to go 27-16 in their final 43 just to tie.

WHERE THEY STAND: The Rays are 71-46, 1 game behind the Yankees and 5 games ahead of the Red Sox in the Wild Card (6 in the loss column). After 117 games in 2008, the Rays were 71-46.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss The 40-Man Roster, Naimoli’s Bitterness And The End Of The Carlos Hernandez Era

Aneury Rodriguez, Calvin Medlock, Carlos Hernandez, Jon Weber, Milton Bradley, Uncategorized, Vince Naimoli, Winston Abreu 5 Comments »

hangoverIf you missed it yesterday, the Rays added Desmond Jennings, Jeremy Hellickson and Alex Torres to the 40-man roster. The move left the team with exactly 40 players on the 40-man roster.

The biggest surprise was the absence of Aneury Rodriguez, the pitcher the Rays received from the Rockies for Jason Hammel. While Torres is more valuable than Rodriguez, we are surprised that the Rays are willing to risk losing Rodriguez in the Rule 5 Draft, when they have a seemingly expendable player on the 40-man roster like Elliot Johnson.

Rodriguez struggled in the first-half of the season and finished with a 4.50 ERA (4.69 FIP) in 142 innings with 111 strikeouts and 59 walks at double-A Montgomery. But he was much stronger in the second-half as he seemed to find a rhythm, regularly pitching into the 7th inning and allowing 2 runs or fewer.

  • Marc Topkin has read the new book by Vince Naimoli we discussed a few months ago, and breaks down a few of the more controversial sections. As we write this we can’t recall the name of the book, but we are pretty sure it should be titled, “I am bitter as hell and about 10 people will know it!” [St. Pete Times]
  • We dropped this on Twitter a couple of days ago, but in case you are one of the silly people not following us on Twitter, a few more big names from the Rays minor league system have been granted free agency, including Winston Abreu, Calvin Medlock (came over in the Jorge Cantu trade), Carlos Hernandez, Jon Weber and Jason Perry.
  • The City of St. Pete has responded to ABC’s recommendation for a new baseball stadium for the Rays. Lines are starting to be drawn in the sand, and as we have said previously, this is going to get ugly before it gets better. [St. Pete Times]
  • Bob Nightengale of USA Today said yesterday that the Rays have become the “clear-cut favorite” to land Milton Bradley. It is unclear if he is basing that on inside information or if he is just speculating based on the news reports that are already out there. [Twitter]

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss No Runs, Maddon As Baker And Upton’s Not Fake Injury

THE GOOD: Reality. At least one of the players realizes that not all is well in the Raysiverse. James Shields called this losing streak “embarassing.”

THE BAD: Joe Maddon Occasionally Not Smart. Prior to September, Matt Garza had made one start with at least 118 pitches. He now has 3 straight starts in September with at least 118. With the Rays out of the race, one has to wonder why Garza took the mound in the 8th inning. And we don’t even care about the runs he gave up. For an organization that does so much to protect their pitchers, the best word we can think of is “dumb.”…Offense? The Rays have scored 23 runs in their current 11-game losing streak and 8 runs in their last 7…Playoffs? The Rays are now 72-71 and in very real danger of not even finishing above .500.

THE TELLING: The Rays are now 12.5 game back in the wild card in 4th place and their Tragic Number is now 8…Matt Garza has now set a career high in innings pitched (185) with 3 starts left. James Shields is 1.1 innings away from his 3rd straight 200 inning season…Andy Sonnanstine will get yet another start on Wednesday…Not that it is a great stat, but when looking through some numbers we thought it was funny that Scott Kazmir’s career win percentage with the Rays was .556. Victor Zambrano’s was .565.

SUNBURST PLAYER OF THE GAME: Due to confusion over the double-header and our own absent-mindedness, we are scratching yesterday’s Sunburst.

DEVIL DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • Pat Burrell tried to check his swing during a pinch-hitting appearance and was called out. Burrell snapped at the umpire and was ejected. But then something strange happened…Joe Maddon kinda threw Burrell under the bus: “From my perspective, I thought he did swing…” [Tampa Tribune]
  • Joe Maddon says the bullpen is not tired. At least, not tired physically. [Tampa Tribune]
  • Did we miss something? Did somebody accuse of BJ Upton of faking his ankle injury? Or did Bossman start a fire just so he could put it out? [St. Pete Times]
  • See if you can follow this logic: The Rays suck now, because they sucked in April. Got that? Yeah, neither do we. [St. Pete Times]
  • This will be the Pirates 18th straight year without a 16-game winner. That is the only streak longer than the Rays, because apparently 16 years is longer than “never.” For the record, the Rays have never even had a 15-game winner. [The Hardball Times]
  • Marc Lancaster writes about how far Jeff Niemann has come since his first start in April and his Rookie of the Year candidacy. [Tampa Tribune]
  • Ken Rosenthal sees how the Rays waited for Scott Kazmir’s value to peak before trading him and wonders if that means they will be less inclined to trade BJ Upton this off-season. He also feels they may be more likely to deal Carl Crawford. [MLB Trade Rumors]

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss New Shea, Zorilla And Sternberg Speaks

Time to bring back the GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

click above image for boxscore

THE GOOD: The Bullpen. Thanks to Lance Cormier, Dan Wheeler and JP Howell, the bullpen gave up a run in the 8th to ensure that the Rays would not lose yet another 1-run game.

THE BAD: Lost Power. New Shea is where home runs go to die. Just ask Evan Longoria about his fly ball in the 1st inning. Or Dioner Navarro who hit a ball that would have gone to the warning track anywhere else, but came up 30 feet short (no Navi, that would not have been a home run)…Andy Sonnanstine. Nobody hits home runs in New Shea. But Sonny found a way to serve one up to a guy that had ZERO home runs entering the game. The only thing left to decide is whether The Duke goes to the bullpen or the minors when Scott Kazmir returns.

THE TELLING: If today’s game is rained out, there will likely be a double-header tomorrow. And this radar cap does not look promising…Today’s game is the National game on Fox. If you are in an area that does not have the game, be sure to check Fox Espanol as they often carry an alternate game.

SUNBURST PLAYER OF THE GAME: BJ Upton

DEVIL DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • Ben Zobrist now has enough plate appearances to qualify as the AL leader in slugging and OPS. [Tampa Tribune]
  • Stuart Sternberg reiterated that the Rays will most likely not add payroll during the season, adding that he doesn’t see an area where the team can improve dramatically…Andrew Friedman addressed the Pedro Martinez situation, saying the team is just doing their “due diligence” by checking out Pedro but that the level of interest is not as great as it is being made out to be. [St. Pete Times]
  • We lost count on the number of teams that watched Pedro Martinez throw yesterday, but you can add the Brewers and Cardinals. The Yankees have already said “no thanks,” but the George A. King III report does say that other teams were impressed, but does not mention which teams. [MLB Trade Rumors]

THE GOOD: Signs. The signs are there. The first 4 innings last night were the best 4 innings we have ever seen from Jeff Niemann. He looked great…Top O’ The Order To Ya. BJ Upton, Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria combined for 9 hits in 15 at bats with 2 walks, 5 runs scored and 4 RBI. Every position player had a hit except for Dioner Navarro…Plate Presence. Only 5 strikeouts and 8 walks is a good sign for a team that came in about 3-to-1  in the other direction (strikeouts to walks)…Shades of Bullpen Past. 3 relievers combined to throw 3.2 shutout innings, allowing 1 hit and 1 walk, striking out 4.

THE BAD: Falling Apart. Jeff Niemann has to give the Rays more than 5.1 innings last night. He was perfect through 4 and was staked to a big lead. Niemann can’t be walking batters on 4 pitches. And there is no reason for him to get so emotional with that lead. Settle down. Pitch to contact. Let the gold gloves take over. And for gosh sakes, give the bullpen a breather…Aggressive Indeed. We love aggressive baserunning, but last night the Rays had 3 players thrown out on the basepaths. Carl Crawford was out trying to tag up from first base. Carlos Pena was picked off first on the old fake-to-third play. And Ben Zobrist was caught trying to steal third.

THE TELLING: Can somebody please get the number for the sports psychologist that Matt Garza went to see last season? We think Jeff Niemann is going to need it…And for those that ask why we call Jeff Niemann, “The Giraffe.” Here is why.

SUNBURST PLAYER OF THE GAME: Carl Crawford. We were tempted to go with The Giraffe, but man, it was scary how quickly he fell apart mentally. It is a little too easy to get inside his head. He may not show it the way Matt Garza used to, but it looks just as bad, maybe worse. So instead we go with CC who was the spark plug last night with 4 hits and 3 runs. It seemed like every time we looked up Crawford was wheeling around third base and heading home.

DEVIL DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • Carlos Pena called a players-only meeting prior to last night’s game, for an opportunity for review their “mission statement.” [St. Pete Times]
  • Joe Maddon is not second-guessing the positioning of his outfielders…Of course he isn’t, but we guarantee every time a normally catchable ball lands on the outfield grass and runners score as a result, inflating a pitcher’s ERA, those pitchers are second-guessing the positioning. [Tampa Tribune]

“Of course you’re going to get questioned on different things based on the fact that we’re doing something a little bit different in a sense,” said Rays manager Joe Maddon, “but I think the results have actually been very good to this point.”

  • Joe Maddon once again addressed the issue of his expiring contract saying he has no concerns and wants to manage the Rays for many years. [Bradenton Herald]
  • Joe Maddon’s message to his players prior to this roadtrip: “Try easier.” [Tampa Tribune]
  • Last week we found a video that suggested Vince Naimoli was writing a book to be called “Let the Truth be Known.” Marc Topkin contacted the publisher who was surprisingly mum on the subject…If there is a book, why wouldn’t the publisher want to publicize it? And if there isn’t a book why wouldn’t the publisher just say so? Strange. [The Heater]
  • James Shields admits the long 2008 season may have affected him, causing his recent “dead arm,” but says “it’s starting to come around.” [St. Pete Times]
  • According to Forbes magazine the Tampa Bay Rays are worth $320 million which is about one-fifth the value of the New York Yankees ($1.5 billion). The Rays are ranked 26th in baseball, up three spots. The value is up 10.3% from 2008 when the Rays were worth $290 million. In 2007, the Rays were worth $267 million. In 2006 the Rays were worth $209 million and $176 million in 2005. In four years the Rays’ value has increased 81.8%…Then again, 81.8% of not much is still not very much. [Forbes]
  • Three starts and somebody has already started the Cy Young chatter for Edwin Jackson…As David Chalk points out, Jackson started out pretty good for the Rays last year also. [Bugs and Cranks]
  • Jason Hammel has been added to the Rockies rotation…It looks like his first start will come Monday against the Padres. [Rays Report]

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Sabathia’s Pounding, Assumptionism And Bad Weather

THE GOOD: No Rays, but watching the O’s beat up on the Yankees and CC Sabathia was a nice replacement. Sabathia getting pounded was good for the Rays and for Mankind.

THE BAD: Having to wait one more day for the Rays opening day.

THE TELLING: Yesterday was the first opening day rainout in franchise history.

DEVIL DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • Marc Topkin looks at how the MLB schedule is generated and why the Rays had to open on the road, noting that the schedule was put together last summer before anybody knew who would win the AL…And of course, we would never expect MLB to tell you they are doing it to maximize revenues, which was the reason we proposed yesterday. And there have been plenty of people smarter than us, that say it is ALL about maximizing revenues. [St. Pete Times]

Just the links this morning…We have a plane to catch. But don’t worry, we have a couple of posts lined up and ready to go, including the latest from the “Pepper” series. See you guys tonight.

DEVIL DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • In case you missed it yesterday afternoon, we ran a bunch of “Webtopia” links in the evening “Happy Hour” feature. [Rays Index]
  • We should point out that we are still updating the Cork-Board in the sidebar during the postseason. Of note, that the Rays did promote Reid Brignac, Elliot Johnson and James Houser to the major league roster prior to the ALDS. This is really just a procedural move. Now, every player on the 40-man roster is on the major league roster and eligible for the postseason should an injury necessitate a move. [Cork-Board]
  • In terms of cost-per-win, the Rays paid $452K per win this season, second only to the Marlins ($260K per win). At the other end of the spectrum was the Yankees at $2.3 million per win. The Red Sox were 4th highest in the AL (7th highest overall) at $1.4 million per win. [MSNBC]
  • Fine! OK? There would be no baseball in Tampa Bay without Vince Naimoli. Thanks Vince. [St. Pete Times]
  • The player drawing the most press coverage in the postseason? Aki Iwamura. [St. Pete Times]
  • Sox and Pinstripes debates the addition of Mike Timlin to the Red Sox ALCS roster. [Sox and Pinstripes]
  • John Romano says that the lingering message from the brawl in Boston is not the actual fight, but the pitch that precipitated the brawl. One way that this incarnation of the Rays differs from teams in the past is that the hitters feel protected by the pitchers. [St. Pete Times]

[THE HANGOVER] Rays Lead In East Dwindles; Playoff Hopes Still Safe

Carl Crawford, Evan Longoria, Joe Maddon, Paul Schulte, Troy Percival, Vince Naimoli 7 Comments »

THE GOOD: The Rays have the 2nd best record in baseball, only a half-game behind the Angels for the best record in the AL…The Rays lead the Twins by 9 games in the loss column. Keep in mind that not only do the Red Sox have to pass the Rays, but the Twins and White Sox must also pass the Rays in order for the Rays to miss the playoffs completely…The benefit of still having a lead means the Rays only have to win 1 game in Boston to remain in first place in the AL East. 2 wins and everybody will suddenly forget this past weekend…Want to take something good from being swept by the Jays? The Jays have now moved past the Yankees into 3rd place in the East…Evan Longoria will likely be back in the lineup on Friday and Carl Crawford will likely be back the final week of the regular season (see below).

THE BAD: Maybe it is time to ditch THIS IDEA? Joe Maddon has all of the Rays, including Don Zimmer, wearing “Ed Hardy” T-shirts with jeans and a sportcoat on this current roadtrip. We are all for keeping it “light” but maybe an 0-3 record since implementing this “policy” indicates time for a change…Weddings in West Virginia during hurricane season.

THE TELLING: The Rays magic number to win the East is now 20. The magic number to clinch at least a wild card spot is 13*. The Rays have 4 games remaining with the Twins. With 9 games prior to that series, the Rays will have a hard time clinching prior to facing the Twins. But the magic number could be as low as 5 entering that September 18-21 showdown. There is a good chance the Rays will clinch a playoff spot in that series or at least put one of the final nails in the Twins’ wild card coffin.

*With the Twins now trailing the White Sox by 3 games in the Central, the head-to-head series between the Twins and White Sox no longer has an affect on the Rays’ magic number.

DEVIL RAYS WEBTOPIA

  • And we are pessimistic?…Marc Topkin is already asking if the season would be a disappointment if the Rays miss the playoffs…Yes. The Red Sox are very, very close now. But the Twins are still miles away. The Rays lead the Twins by 9 games (!) in the loss column. The Rays are going to the playoffs. [St. Pete Times]
  • Joe Maddon says Troy Percival is still the Rays’ closer despite giving up 6 runs in 2 appearances since coming off the DL…Also, Evan Longoria took soft-toss yesterday and will finally take live batting practice on Tuesday…That suggests Longoria will be available to play on Friday. [St. Pete Times]
  • Carl Crawford looked good during a recent check-up and there is still hope that he could be activated the final week of the regular season, although he would likely be limited to late-inning pinch-running and as a defensive substitution. [St. Pete Times]
  • Marc Lancaster shows that the Rays were smart to limit the innings on their young arms last season, and that diligence could pay big dividends in September and October. [Tampa Tribune]
  • The Hardball Times takes a closer look at the Rays’ top 3 starting pitchers and how they may measure up in October. [The Hardball Times]

However, with Kazmir’s recent struggles, he becomes the key to the depth of the rotation. If he can’t get out of the fifth inning, Tampa’s stay in the postseason could be short. On the other hand, if he can rediscover his early season form over his last several starts of the regular season and begins to pitch efficiently, the front three of this rotation will have Tampa in position to be a force in October.

  • Paul Schulte, who is a member of the Tampa Bay Rays’ sponsored wheelchair softball team, is headed to Beijing as a member of the USA wheelchair basketball team. Schulte will captain Team USA. [Sticks of Fire]
  • We agree…While Vince Naimoli does deserve credit for bringing baseball to the Bay Area, let’s not all of the sudden start acting like he deserves any credit for this season’s sudden success. [Walkoff Walk]
  • The Red Sox are indeed scoreboard watching when they are not on the field. [Boston Herald]
