Joe Maddon Was Nearly The Manager Of The Boston Red Sox

Joe Maddon, Terry Francona No Comments »

Back in December, 2003, Joe Maddon was a finalist for the managerial job of the Boston Red Sox. That job would eventually go to Terry Francona, who was endorsed by Curt Schilling, whom the Red Sox had just received in a trade with the Diamondbacks.

Of course, two years after the Red Sox job went to Francona, Maddon was hired by the Devil Rays, and as they say, the rest is history. Francona did go on to lead the Red Sox to two World Series titles. But now, two years removed from their last playoff appearance, and following one of the worst collapses in big league history, Francona is out as a manager. Meanwhile, the miracle Rays are in the playoffs for the third time in four years.

Of course, none of this is breaking news. But it is fun to look at the current state of both franchises, and look back and see just how differently this could have ended up for both.

[HAPPY HOUR] Red Sox Nation Waiting For Sox To Come Back From 4 Games To 3 Deficit

Akinori Iwamura, Carl Crawford, David Price, Dick Vitale, Jason Varitek, Jonathon Papelbon, Jordi Scrubbings, Scott Cursi, Terry Francona 6 Comments »

Somebody at the 4-letter thinks the Red Sox will now pull off the greatest comeback in the history of baseball, coming back from a 4 games to 3 deficit. Well, Bristol is in the heart of Red Sox Nation. (Thanks Brett).

We have now watched the 8th and 9th innings about a dozen times. One thing we didn’t notice last night was the incredible play that Aki Iwamura made on the final out. The ball takes a wicked (pun intended) hop and nearly goes over Aki’s head. If he misses that ball, it is first and third and things are suddenly very scary.

Also, let’s not forget the one guy that has worn the Devil Rays/Rays uniform longer than anybody else and knows the pain of the first 10 years more than most, Scott Cursi. The Rays bullpen catcher has been warming up pitchers since 1999. Congrats Scott, you earned it.

Finally, last week we took exception when one Red Sox blogger wrote about Carl Crawford and his “gangster neck tattoo”. This week, Red Sox bloggers are back at it. This time courtesy of Surviving Grady.

Especially that punk-ass Carl Crawford, who you know is just an injury away from boosting car stereos.

Stay classy Red Sox Nation.

[THE HANGOVER] 2008 Tampa Bay Rays: Well Thought Out, Well Planned And Perfectly Executed

This piece by John Romano goes above the fold today. A must read…Joe Maddon is a manager that is not big on team meetings, but there were three this season that set the tone for the 2008 Rays. The “genius” label is tossed around in sports as loosely as a teen girl tosses around the label “best friend”. In both cases, the overuse takes away from the significance. In the case of Maddon, we will just call him a brilliant tactician. He doesn’t push buttons often, but when he does, you can be sure the move is well thought out, well planned and perfectly executed. Come to think of it. That pretty much describes everything about the 2008 Tampa Bay Rays. [St. Pete Times]

  • Joe Maddon said the goal will be to inflate Daisuke Matsuzaka’s pitch count. Maddon also said that it is not out of the question to go back to James Shields in game 4 if needed…That does not seem likely considering how well Andy Sonnanstine pitched against the Red Sox in September. [Boston Globe]

  • Marc Lancaster spoke with JP Howell. By our count Howell said “man” seven times during the interview. And he sure loves his PB&J and Doritos, man. [Tampa Tribune]

  • Adam Kilgore of the Boston Globe sure wants there to be bad blood in this series. Terry Francona and several players were asked about the potential for something to happen in the ALCS and they all sound as if they are not even considering it, which is smart considering what is on the line. But not satisfied with those responses, Kilgore finally gets a couple to give weak “I guess it could happen” responses. One thing we have learned from some reporters. [HAPPY HOUR] Crawford Admits First Round Is ‘Iffy’

Carl Crawford, Fernando Perez, Heath Rollins, Jason Bartlett, Jeremy Hellickson, Matt Silverman, Mitch Talbot, Stuart Sternberg, Terry Francona, Victor Zambrano 3 Comments »

[UPDATE: 11:32] The Red Sox beat the Indians, but the Rays overcame a first inning that saw the O’s score 5 runs before an out, to get the win. With the victory, the Rays magic number to win the division is now 1. The Angels are currently losing in the 5th inning, 4-2. An Angels loss and the Rays be 1 game behind for the best record in the AL. The Rays won the season-series with the Angels 6-3.

As we get closer to the playoffs, the links are going to start coming fast and furious…On certain days we will provide a late afternoon “Happy Hour” to try and keep the pace…

[THE HANGOVER] Dirtbag Slams Halladay And The Jays; Forecast Calls For More Beanballs

Dioner Navarro, Grant Balfour, Houston Street, Joe Maddon, Scott Kazmir, Seth McClung, Terry Francona 1 Comment »

THE GOOD: Little Ball and Long Ball. The Rays are not big on “Little Ball”, but it sure helped in the 6th inning. An infield single by Ben Zobrist (OK, it went to the OF, but it bounced over Scott Rolen’s head), a bunt single by Aki Iwamura, a dribbler down the line by Carl Crawford (it was fair no matter what the Jays announcers said), was followed by a Carlos Pena bloop single to score the first run of the game. Of course, funny thing about silly “Little Ball”. That only gets you one run. One out later, Evan Longoria connected on the 10th pitch of his at bat for his first career grand slam. Game Over.

THE BAD: Bean Balls. With 2 outs in the 6th inning, and up 5-0, Dioner Navarro bunted for a basehit. Roy Halladay then tried to hit Ben Zobrist. Two innings later, Navi would be hit by a pitch. Since when is a 5-0 lead in the AL an “insurmountable lead” in which a team should no longer try to score? That was BS by Halladay and even more BS that they would still be fuming 2 innings later. The Jays announcers talked about how “you just don’t [bunt] in that situation”. This peeves us to no end. As a longtime proponent of the “unwritten rules” the one “unwritten rule” that is idiotic is the “no bunting with a big lead” rule. In the 70s a 5-run lead might have been insurmountable, but how many 5-run leads did the Rays blow last year? If the Jays think that a 5-run lead is “too big” for bunting then we suggest they stop throwing breaking balls and go take an effin’ shower. The Rays better sweep these bitches. And if Sunday’s game is a blow out in the 7th inning or later, a Blue Jay is going down and they are going down hard…Anything produced by the Blue Jays. Whether it is the in-inning commercials (no shit, they actually show commercials during an inning) or the runner in the 9th inning that went from first to third and then was apparently thinking about “tagging up” and going home on the same play. You can tag up on a basehit? Seriously? We can’t make this shit up.

THE TELLING: Of the players in the top 15 in baseball in stolen bases, only Alex Rios (14) has hit into more double plays than either BJ Upton (10) or Carl Crawford (9)…Despite assertations by several websites this week that BJ Upton was not struggling, Joe Maddon moved BJ Upton down to the #7 spot in the order…What? The national media doesn’t notice that the Rays once again have a 1.5 game lead in the Easy despite a 7-game losing streak? Of course not. So much for those, “Rays are coming back down to Earth” stories from last week.

DEVIL RAYS WEBTOPIA

  • Joe Maddon was also a little upset about Dioner Navarro being hit by a pitch in the 8th inning. [St. Pete Times]

Maddon said. “Maybe in 1922, you wouldn’t (bunt) because nobody is going to hit a home run. But in the year 2008, people hit home runs. And you could see how they came back. Once again, in baseball, for me, there are moments when people definitely mentally move at a glacier pace, and they really have to get beyond it. That’s what I think about that situation. And it stunk.”

  • We are not really sure what this writer is talking about. Les Levine is critical of those that blame Terry Francona for using Scott Kazmir in the All-Star game. In fact, we don’t recall anybody blaming Francona. We said that Francona and the Red Sox benefitted, but we also understand he had to use Kid K. And the Rays actually praised Francona…This is just another example of a writer in the mainstream media trying to invent a controversy. [News-Herald]
  • Man, Yankees fans hate Seth McClung more than we do. [The Big Lead]
  • Jon Heyman says the Rays have not talked to Oakland about Houston Street although he suggests the Rays would have a good shot at landing the A’s closer. [SI.com]
  • We proposed the question a couple of days ago, now Joe Maddon is emphasizing the point…Grant Balfour is closer material. [MLB]

“He’s got that kind of stuff,” Maddon said. “And the biggest thing to me is the makeup. The closer makeup — it’s different. Those last three outs of the game are different. People can argue as much as they want, but they are. And the last out of the game is always the most difficult. … I think, from my perspective, [Balfour is] growing into that makeup where he could do that one day. Definitely his stuff is good enough.”

THE SUNDAY MORNING REVOLUTION: Aki Rescues The Rays

Akinori Iwamura, Andy Cannizaro, Andy Sonnanstine, Elliot Johnson, Evan Longoria, Gary Glover, Gerry Hunsicker, Jason Bartlett, Nolan Ryan, Rocco Baldelli, Scott Dohmann, Terry Francona 4 Comments »

DRG here again to get you through the weekend. I can be reached here..
  • The Good: To quote a commenter from last night: Akinori Iwamura… you beautiful, beautiful small little Japanese man. Although I might worry a little for Aki’s safety today. He did a nice little bat flip and walked the first few steps down the line to admire the blast. Don’t get me wrong. I loved it. And in reality the Sawx are the last team in the world that could ever complain about something like that as long as Manny Ramirez wears the Scarlett Hose. But still. Aki might get a little buzz this afternoon if a pitcher gets an opportunity…Oh yeah and the bullpen, Again. 2 runs in the last 30 innings pitched from the bullpen. That’s right. 2 runs in the last 30 innings pitched from the Tampa Bay Rays relief corps.
  • The Bad: Jello Shots. Seriously? Who the hell thought Jello Shots was a good idea?
  • The Telling: This worked yesterday, so I will try going to the well one more time. The last time the Rays won 6 in a row was August 3, 2005. The winning pitchers during that streak were Scott Kazmir, Casey Fossum, Doug Waechter, Mark Hendrickson, Seth McClung and Travis Harper. No shit…Also if the Rays win today they will be 3 games over .500 after 25 games. It looks like that would be the latest in a season that the Rays have ever been 3 games over .500. In 2004 they were 40-38 but never got to 3-over. The latest they have ever been 3-over was way back in 1999 when the Rays were 11-8 after 19 games.
  • Today: Huge matchup of Aces as the Rays go for the sweep. It is Josh Beckett versus James Shields.

DEVIL DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • Only surprise here is that Andrew Friedman didn’t make this move sooner. Elliot Johnson has been sent to Durham and Andy Cannizaro has been called up to take his place. With Jason Bartlett’s shoulder problems, Joe Maddon undoubtedly would prefer to have a natural shortstop on the bench to back him up. [Rays Report]
  • There is speculation around the Rangers that new team President Nolan Ryan may ask Gerry Hunsicker to come on board as the new GM. [ESPN via Lone Star Ball]
  • Marc Topkin takes a look at the Rays surplus of starting pitching and comes to the same conclusion that many including The Professor have been saying for a while, Andy Sonnanstine is likely the odd-man out and could be headed to the bullpen with Scott Dohmann being DFA’d. Even with the 3-hit shutout, Duke is just the better option in the bullpen. [St. Pete Times]
  • Red Sox skipper Terry Francona is impressed with what he sees in the Rays. [MLB]
  • What a difference a year makes for the Rays bullpen, where Gary Glover is the only reliever that was with the Rays at this time last year. [Tampa Tribune]
  • The Rays rank first in affordability in the major leagues. [MLB]
  • I am amazed at how many stories have been written that say giving Evan Longoria a long term deal so early is very risky. All these stories make the same argument: Prospects flame out all the time. They will then go on to list all the top prospects that never panned out. Only they only list pitchers. The only top hitting prospect that anybody ever mentions is Rocco Baldelli and he has what appears to be a rare genetic disorder. His had nothing to do with miscalculated scouting. Top hitting prospects *never* fail. They may not turn out to be all-stars, but they never fail. There is basically ZERO risk in the Longoria deal. [Minneapolis Star-Tribune]

AL East Roundup: Yankees And Red Sox Continue To Roll Towards October

John Gibbons, JP Ricciardi, Roger Clemens, Terry Francona No Comments »

AL EAST W L GB L10 STK E#
Boston Red Sox 22 10 - 7-3 W3
New York Yankees 16 16 6.0 7-3 W2 125

Tampa Bay Devil Rays 14 19 8.5 4-6 L3 122
Toronto Blue Jays 13 20 9.5 2-8 L8 121

Yankees 6, Rangers 2. The Yankees scored 4 in the bottom of 1st and never looked back as Mike Mussina worked 6 and said “We don’t need no stinkin’ Rocket”

Red Sox 9, Blue Jays 3. $100 million? So that is what a #3 starter goes for these days? Daisuke Matsuzaka struck out 8 in 7 innings and now has three good starts this season. One was versus KC on opening day and two against the Blue Jays, both of whom are among the worst teams in baseball.

AL East Roundup: The Royals Are The Feast Of The East

Darrell Rasner, Jaret Wright, Mike Mussina, Terry Francona No Comments »

AL EAST W L GB L10 STK E#
Toronto Blue Jays 5 4 - 5-4 L1
Boston Red Sox 4 4 0.5 4-4 L1 154

Tampa Bay Devil Rays 3 6 2.0 3-6 L1 152

Orioles 2, Royals 1. If there is any consolation to the 3-6 start for the Rays it is that just about everybody else in the AL East has had a shot at the Royals except for the Rays. The O’s are the latest with a chance to feast on Kansas City, scoring the winning run on a Jay Gibbons single in the bottom of the 10th. The human rain delay, Steve Trachsel worked 7 innings and only gave up 3 hits.

Tigers 5, Blue Jays 4. Tomo Ohka worked 6 innings but gave up 5 runs on 8 hits and a walk.
