[THE GHOST OF BUCCO BRUCE] Big News From Across The Bay

Doug Williams, Evan Longoria, Lee Roy Selmon, Mike Alstott, Paul Gruber, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 9 Comments »

We have been in a bit of a funk for the last 36 hours. Not so much despondent as we are angry. With about 7 hours to go before game 6 at The Trop tonight, we needed a pick-us-up and Joe Bucs Fan delivered big time.

As Joe is sure Bucs fans are aware, the Glazer Boys finally relented and will add a Ring of Fame to honor greats in Bucs history. The team also break out the orange jerseys in 2009 to honor the team’s fourth decade.

We have been a little distracted this week and somehow missed this. But both ideas put a hugE with a capital E, smile on our face.

For the ring of honor we would want Lee Roy Selmon, Doug Williams, Mike Alstott and Paul Gruber.

As for the throwbacks, we only hope that they will be more like the “pure orange” of the 70s and 80s and not the “creamsicle”, neon orange of the early 90s.

And to keep this somewhat tied to the Rays…Joe Bucs Fan also has a picture of the “0 for 4″ girl that Evan Longoria has been hanging out with. And she happens to be a Bucs cheerleader. Well played. Well played indeed.

Back in April we were messing around on another website and created the above mashup. The banner represents all the current and former professional franchises that play or played under the “Tampa Bay” banner [Ed. note: Almost all, we don't acknowledge the Mutiny], and the championships won by those franchises (see original post for explanations of the various features).

Little did we know that six months later the Tampa Bay Rays would have a shot to add the 9th skull and crossbones to the banner built on the blood of the Red Sox and Yankees.

Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go…I wanna be sedated

[TAMPA BAY] A Shout-Out To All The Tampa Bay Franchises

Earlier this week, Paul Lukas of UniWatch, posted a graphical mashup created by a reader that incorporated all the sports teams logos for the city of Oakland .

This inspired several other readers to submit their own mashups, including Cleveland, Denver, Philadelphia and Detroit.

Not to be outdone, we decided to make sure that the Tampa Bay area was represented and created a mashup for all the current and former professional franchises that play or played under the “Tampa Bay” banner [Ed. note: Almost all, we don't really acknowledge the Mutiny].

Notes on the mash-up follow the graphic. Click on the image for a slightly larger version…

  • For those not from the Tampa Bay are, the pirate ship is in reference to the legend that Tampa Bay was once invaded by the pirate Jose Gaspar
  • The flags at the top of the masts are the flags of the two cities that border the Bay and have served as homes to Tampa Bay sports teams (Tampa, St. Pete)
  • Each sail is representative of the current and past professional organizations that played under the banner of “Tampa Bay” (Rays, Bucs, Lightning, Storm, Rowdies, Bandits)
  • The skull and cross bones represent the championships won by Tampa Bay franchises in chronological order
  • We really…reaaaalllllllyyyyyy wanted to incorporate Bucco Bruce but could not come up with a good way for doing it
