Earlier this week we wondered if there would be any lingering animosity between the Rays new reliever and the local media due to an ugly incident back in 2009.

Well, yesterday, Fernando Rodney called Marc Topkin to apologize about the incident.

Per Enriqu Rojas of ESPN.com, Fernando Rodney will make $1.75 million in 2012, and the Rays have a 2013 option for $2.5 million. The Rays can buy out the option for $250,000.

Will Rays New Reliever Be Bitter Towards Rays Media For His 2009 Suspension?

In 2009, following a Tigers win at Tropicana Field, Fernando Rodney “celebrated” his save by firing the ball from the field into the stands. That ball went into the press box and “bounced near several working writers.”

We wrote about the incident in 2009 > “Fernando Rodney Fires Ball At Reporters, Jim Leyland Figures They Wanted A Souvenir

And now Rodney will sign with the Rays today or tomorrow, pending his physical.

Rodney was eventually suspended for three games for the 2009 incident, and some in the Tigers organization believed at the time that the suspension was brought about in large part because of an email sent to the league office by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

[Tigers President Dave] Dombrowski said he was told a “very strong” influence for the suspension was a letter from St. Petersburg Times reporter Marc Topkin, president of the Tampa Bay chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America…”I think a lot of it was driven by the letter that was written by the president of the association in Tampa,” Dombrowski said. “Afterwards, he didn’t think that Rodney was at all sorry or remorseful. … I know he was remorseful when I spoke to him. He was very, very sorry.”

Topkin at the time responded to the assertion that he was responsible for the suspension…

“[Topkin said the email] wasn’t intended to prompt punishment but to make sure they were aware of the incident. Even without the email, It wasn’t as if this would’ve gone unnoticed…I said in the email that he did not apologize afterward…nor did he show any remorse that somebody might’ve been hurt, which was a very real possibility…I’m surprised that the issue of the Tampa Bay chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association talking with Major League Baseball is part of the story. Clearly, Fernando Rodney threw the ball into the press box. Clearly, Major League Baseball was concerned enough to suspend him.”

Will Rodney still be upset about this three years later? We don’t know. But some people would be. And you can be sure that it will be awkward.

Report: Rays To Sign Fernando Rodney

According to a report on ESPN Deportes (in Spanish), the Rays have signed reliever Fernando Rodney. Here is the translation…

Dominican reliever Fernando Rodney said Thursday it signed with the Tampa Bay Rays and seek the opportunity to become the team’s closer…”It’s confirmed, will be published in January if God permits. I signed for one year with Tampa Bay to keep working hard and see if God gives me something better,” said Rodney

Rodney will reportedly make “just over” $2 million. We should note that we do not know yet if this is a guaranteed big league deal. It could be a minor league deal with the salary contingent on Rodney making the team.

Rodney spent the last two seasons with the Angels, saving 17 games combined. In 2009, Rodney saved 37 games with the Tigers. This past season, Rodney has a 4.50 ERA (4.71 FIP) in 32.0 innings, with 26 strikeouts and 28 walks. He spent about a month on the DL with what was called an “upper back strain.”

In 2009, Rodney was suspended for three games after he fired a ball from the field at The Trop that landed in the press box near several working writers.

hangover[Update] Marc Topkin is reporting that Rodney will receive a 3-game suspension for throwing the ball into the press box.

[9:00am] On Saturday, the St. Pete Times wrote about an incident involving Fernando Rodney following Friday’s game at the Trop against the Tigers.

Tigers closer Fernando Rodney said he was acting on emotion when he celebrated Friday’s win with an unusual and dangerous maneuver: throwing the ball from the field into the press box…The ball bounced near several working writers. No one was hurt.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland, most likely in between puffs of a cigarette, tried to poo-poo the incident (scroll to bottom).

“It doesn’t bother me at all,” Leyland said. “Obviously there was no intent to do anything wrong. I’ve seen 30 balls thrown into the stands during batting practice every night. I’ve seen third-base coaches throw them into the stands over the dugout.”

Yes folks, Leyland just compared underhanding a ball to a 12-year old behind the duguout to firing a ball 150-feet into the press box. Why didn’t this guy try that defense.

Luckily for the reporters, Rodney’s aim was about as good as normal.
