Dan Johnson Designated For Assignment; Ruggiano Promoted

Dan Johnson, JP Howell, Justin Ruggiano, Rob Delaney 12 Comments »

The Rays have announced that Dan Johnson has been designated for assignment and has been replaced by Justin Ruggiano. In addition, JP Howell has been activated, with Rob Delaney, being sent back to Durham as expected.

Of players this season with at least 50 at bats, only two players have a batting average lower than Johnson’s .115. He also has just one home run and a .165 wOBA (that’s not good). Ruggiano was hitting .301 with 6 home runs and a .398 wOBA at triple-A.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Big Dub Being Big Dub, A Questionable Lineup, And The Pumkin’s Future

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Big Dub. Yes, Wade Davis. He is not James Shields or David Price. Davis isn’t going to throw a lot of 3-hit shutouts. But what you want is 7+ innings with 3 or fewer runs. And he did that last night. Trouble is, he is not going to win a lot of games if the Rays don’t score 4+ runs. Davis did what was expected. The offense did not…Brasheed Jwallace Upton. He lazied the shit out of that one ball. Home run number 7 on the year. He is now on pace for 26 home runs, a .260 average, and 743 called third strikes. That’s about right.

THE BAD: Lineup. Dan Johnson? We forgot he was still on the team. Sean Rodriguez? Bleh. Reid Brignac? Automatic out. Kelly Shoppach? OK, he hit a home run, but he was batting behind Brignac. What does that tell you? That is 4 guys in the lineup at the same time with batting averages south of .200. In the end, players not named Brasheed Jwallace Upton went 2-26…Dan Johnson. The end is near, right? The logical thing to do: DFA Johnson, let him clear waivers, send him to triple-A, and then call him up in September when the Rays need a single dramatic home run.

THE TELLING: Some guy named JP Howell is expected to join the team today. We looked it up. Apparently this dude pitched for the Rays in 2009. Never heard of him. It seems logical that Rob Delaney will be heading back to Durham…One thing we don’t do here is bitch about strike zones unless something is just so egregious. Major League Baseball has designed the strikezone to be subjective. And you are asking a middle-aged human to judge something with a margin of error of 1-3 inches in less than half-a-second. Mistakes are going to be made.

Postgame Shot Of Joe: David Price Is Human

Dan Johnson, David Price, Evan Longoria, Matt Joyce 6 Comments »

Well, it was a bummer of a game. The way David Price has been pitching of late, five runs is a winner.

But Price was more like Scotty Kazmir than his usual Price self. Hey, the guy’s human, as are the Rays. Five-game win streak snapped. Joe will take five wins every six games any day.

Oh, look: Casey Kotchman is continuing to hit. And Dan Johnson is continuing to stink out loud at the plate.

Should be interesting when Dirtbag returns. It’s going to be very hard to justify keeping Johnson on the parent club when Kotchman is so far superior defensively than Johnson and it hitting so much better as well.

But the conundrum for Merlot Joe doesn’t end there. Matt Joyce seems so much more comfortable hitting in the top half of the lineup than the bottom half, specifically when he is in the No. 3 hole for some reason.

Does Merlot Joe dare to put DIrtbag at cleanup? That would be a ballsy move.

Postgame Shot Of Joe: Cream Rises To The Top

Andrew Friedman, Ben Zobrist, Casey Kotchman, Dan Johnson, David Price, Johnny Damon, Kyle Farnsworth, Sam Fuld 5 Comments »

Well, it was a little too close for comfort, but the reason Joe loves the Rays this year shined in this game.

* Ace David Price continued his dominance over the Jays, throwing a strong eight innings (Joe will try to forget that ninth inning… with the help of some cold beers).

* The Legend of San Fuld. Dude just continues to get the job done, both with the stick and his devil-may-care diving for flyballs. Keep it up man and we just may all forget that CC guy who ran off to Boston… if you haven’t made Joe forget already.

* Johnny Damon. So far this guy has been an absolute steal. Mazel tov Andrew Friedman!

* Zorilla. Yeah, he could have played some better defense last night in a tight game. But he made up for it with a towering blast to right that scared the couples in the hotel rooms of RogersCentre in the midst of a mid-afternoon tryst.

* Casey Kotchman’s glove. Dude sold that groundball out in the ninth when it appeared the Rays just might collapse. Travis Snyder was safe at first but Kotchman, doing his best Keith Hernandez imitation, pulled off the bag just enough to fool first base ump Mike Everitt. Solid play Casey. May have saved the game. Kotchman, like Fuld, is hitting better than most expected. With Kotchman’s glove, why not ride this horse (Kotchman’s offense) until it wears out? Joe’s confident Dan Johnson couldn’t have made this play.

* Kyle Farnsworth. No, he wasn’t solid at first and needed help to survive (see Kotchman, above) but Joe doesn’t know what to think of that bare-handed catch. Emotional Joe was giddy; sober Joe was scared. Man, what do you think you are doing catching a groundball with your bare hand??? That hand is your livelihood, dude! But it was that ballsy move that may have kept the Jays from scoring any more runs.

Fun game to watch. Rays win. Maybe a little too much excitement in the ninth for Joe but it’s a win. Good enough for Joe to crack open another cold one.

Postgame Shot Of Joe: Triple-A Night In The Field

Dan Johnson, Sean Rodriguez 6 Comments »

Just miserable stuff for anyone who invested the nearly four hours into tonight’s extra-inning choke job in Toronto. At least the Sam Fuld show kept up the entertainment value.

You just knew Sean Rodriguez dropping a perfect pickoff throw at second base in the seventh inning was trouble, combined with Dan Johnson’s inability to make a high school throw from first to second.

Casey Kotchman anyone? At least as a late-inning defensive replacement for a guy hitting .121.

If Johnson can’t hit or field, what the hell’s he doing out there? Joe’s really never understood why a 31-year-old journeyman needs all this rope to hang himself.

Ben Zobrist’s odd angles and decision making were the icing on Triple-A night in the field.

Four runs and a quality start has to be enough for these Rays. It wasn’t.

Put this on the list of painful losses Rays fans can reference in September.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss A Needed Win, More Manny Fallout, And Bongo Power!

Baby Prof Trumps Manny, Bongo Power, Dan Johnson, Manny Ramirez 15 Comments »

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

click above image for boxscore

THE GOOD: Bongo Power. We can talk about a lot of good things that happened last night, including Johnny Damon’s first homer with the Rays, BJ Upton’s big single or Dan Johnson’s go ahead home run in the 9th inning. But we are going to give credit where credit is due: to Baby Prof and her Bongos. She wore her new Rays cheerleading outfit and banged on her bongos, promising good luck. And good luck happened. Hey, they can’t be any more annoying than cowbells, right?

THE BAD: Curses. On the same day that Manny Ramirez retires due to a failed drug test, Pat Burrell received his ring for winning the World Series last year. We mentioned this at the end of yesterday’s post on Manny, but considering who the Rays have employed at DH, maybe the position is cursed. And maybe it is time to move to the NL…Out Of Options. It is unfortunate for the Rays that Manny refusd his suspension even if he doesn’t ever want to play again. If he had accepted the suspension, he would have been eligible to return July 28. If the Rays are in the pennant race, his bat would have been a nice boost to the offense for the final two months. By choosing retirement, this is no longer an option, even if Manny changes his mind. If Manny seeks reinstatement at some point, he will still have to serve his suspension. So why not serve the suspension, and then see how he feels at the end of July?

THE TELLING: The Rays scored more runs in this game (9) than in their first 6 games combined (8). And when the Rays took the lead in the 9th inning, it end a streak of 62 consecutive innings without ever holding a lead. That is a big league record to start a season…Sounds like the Rays will opt to upgrade the defense at first base over left field. The Rays are leaning towards a regular lineup of Casey Kotchman at 1B, moving Dan Johnson to DH, and leaving Johnny Damon in LF…So, should the people that booed Manny Ramirez at the Trop still “go to hell” as one hack stipulated? Or is it OK to boo Manny now? We’re curious. What do the booing police say?… Kelly Shoppach is day-to-day with knee soreness, after having to be removed from last night’s game.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: Whatever the opposite of “Murderers Row is, that’s what the Rays lineup is right now without Manny Ramirez and Evan Longoria…There is a lot being written about Many Ramirez’ Hall-of-Fame credentials. We wonder if Manny even cares. He doesn’t strike us as a guy that cares too much what others think. And we would be surprised if even knows where the Hall of Fame is located. If baseball ever had an Idiot Savant, it was Manny. A moron that could wield his wooden sword with as much ferocity and accuracy as anybody that ever played.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss A Hot Pumpkin, Joyce 2nd And Traitor Scott

Cesar Cabral, Dan Johnson, Gov. Rick Scott, John Jaso, Matt Joyce 14 Comments »

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

click above image for boxscore

THE GOOD: Dan Johnson. We are about to find out what The Great Pumpkin is capable of when given regular playing time. And we are getting a glimpse this spring. Johnson hit his 4th home run last night, and 2nd in 2 days…Reid Brignac. If Briggy Baseball does anything offensively this season it will be a bonus. So it is exciting to see how hot he is right now. Last night he had 2 more hits and is now 15-36 (.417) this spring…David Price. King David was dealing last night. So good, that Joe Maddon let him toss 103 pitches when he was originally slated for 90. He struck out 7, walked 2 and gave up just 1 run in 6.1 innings.

THE BAD: John Jaso. Jaso worked out yesterday, but is still sore and is expected to be out a few more days. With only 9 days until opening day, there isn’t much time left to get Jaso’s bat going. So far this spring he is only 5-27 (.185) although two of those are home runs.

THE TELLING: Ben Zobrist led off, something that will happen a lot during the season. But more interesting was seeing Matt Joyce in the 2-hole. Johnny Damon will probably need a game off every week. Will we see Joyce batting second on those days?…David Price threw his curveball for the first time, but really wants to get his slider back to where it can be, noting that it “wasn’t very good“…

  • Three more relievers were cut and reassigned to minor league camp: Chris Bootcheck, Mike Ekstrom and RJ Swindle. None of the cuts are surprising, but Ekstrom and Swindle are a bit disappointing since they might have been favorites for two of the open bullpen slots when camp began.

Ben Zobrist Will Play First Base This Season

Ben Zobrist, Casey Kotchman, Dan Johnson 12 Comments »

Joe Maddon will have a roster with a lot of flexibility this season. In other words, it is his dream come true. And how those pieces fit together on a daily basis is in part dependent on how Maddon chooses to use Ben Zobrist.

There has been a lot of speculation that Zobrist would start to see more time at first base as he got older. And with Dan Johnson and Casey Kotchman as Maddon’s two best first base options entering Spring Training, there has been speculation that Maddon would use Zobrist regularly at first base this season.

And now we have confirmation…

“He’s definitely going to be out there. … But I do want him to be comfortable there, more than he was last year.”

This tells us that Read the rest of this entry »

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Crawford (Again), The Pumkin’s New Deal And Pena’s Future

Aneury Rodriguez, Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, Dan Johnson, Dan Wheeler, Jason Bartlett, JP Howell 4 Comments »

Yesterday we argued that Carl Crawford’s price went up with Jayson Werth’s new contract. Jayson Stark takes the contrarian view. He argues that if Crawford’s price has gone up, then his options have gone down. In fact, Stark argues that Crawford’s options may now be limited to just the Yankees.

We’re not sure. First of all, Stark bases his argument on Crawford demanding eight years and $180 million. We don’t see it going that high. Also, Stark seems a little too quick to dismiss teams like the Red Sox, Rangers and Tigers. All these teams have spent big money in the past. And just because they don’t usually spend this much, doesn’t mean they won’t be willing to go that far this time.

If Crawford does want $180 million, then he better hope the Yankees are really interested. But if the price is just $144 million, then there is no reason to think the others teams are no longer interested.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss The End Of The Navi-Era And Free Agency For Howell And Aybar

Andy Sonnanstine, Dan Johnson, Dioner Navarro, JP Howell, Lance Cormier, Willy Aybar 8 Comments »

More donuts for the rest of the Rays! We have known for a while that Dioner Navarro would not be back in 2011. But yesterday the door hit him in the ass. There is probably a repair man fixing the door as you read this.

Yesterday was the deadline to tender contracts to players not under contract with less than six years experience. The Rays chose to non-tender Dioner Navarro , JP Howell, Willy Aybar and Lance Cormier. All four are now free agents. The Rays did tender Dan Johnson and Andy Sonnanstine.

While Navarro will not be back, there is a good chance the Rays will re-sign Howell and will try to re-sign Cormier and Aybar.  Howell, Cormier and Aybar were likely non-tendered  because the Rays think they will sign for less than what they would have received through arbitration. In other words, the Rays want those players to take a paycut, something that an arbitrator would not have done.
