Cliff Lee Traded To Phillies; Crawford Officially “Dangled”

Carl Crawford, Cliff Lee, Scott Kazmir 6 Comments »

Cliff Lee has been traded by the Indians to the Phillies. MLB Trade Rumors has all the details.

Meanwhile, an anonymous GM has confirmed to Jon Heyman what we had been hearing about Carl Crawford. That he is available, or at least was at one point recently.

Tampa Bay will consider anything, and one competing GM swears [the Rays] briefly dangled outfielder Carl Crawford a few weeks ago.

So, no Lee. No Roy Halladay (probably). Without a pitcher coming back to the Rays, it now seems highly unlikely that the Rays will move Scott Kazmir before the end of the year.

Kazmir Back To The Mets? Pena On The Block?

Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, Cliff Lee, Scott Kazmir 8 Comments »

Joel Sherman of the New York Post is reporting (via MLB Trade Rumors) that the Rays have discussed trading Scott Kazmir with both the Rangers and the Mets. Neither move appears to be heading anywhere.

The Rangers turned down an offer to bring Scott Kazmir home to Texas. The Rays have shopped Kazmir around a bit, even calling the MetsNew York Mets , who expressed initial interest but nothing more.

And while it is no surprise that the Rays are trying to move Kazmir to free up salary to acquire Cliff Lee and/or Victor Martinez, the big surprise is that the Rays would also be willing to move Carlos Pena.

Tampa is trying to see if they could trade Kazmir, Carlos Pena and in the right blockbuster even Carl Crawford to free up dollars to make a bigger trade. The Rays are most focused on seeing if they can add Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez in one trade, though they continue to call on Halladay, as well.

Pena is making $8 million this season and is due $10.125 million next year in the last year of his current deal.

Andy Sonnanstine To Be Traded?

Andy Sonnanstine, Cliff Lee, Scott Kazmir, Wade Davis 3 Comments »

hangoverGordon Edes of Yahoo! Sports chimes in on the Rays efforts to both move Scott Kazmir and land Cliff Lee. This time, the third team is the Rangers. This is not particularly surprising, but Edes adds that Andy Sonnanstine may have pitched his last game with the Rays.

The Rays also almost certainly will move Andy Sonnanstine, perhaps to a team looking for bullpen help.

So far, we have felt that the most likely scenario for the Rays was trading Kazmir and promoting Sonnanstine to take his place. But “almost certainly” trading The Duke would kill that notion.

So what happens if the Rays trade Kazmir and Sonnanstine, and fail to land Lee in return? Are the Rays ready to promote Wade Davis to the rotation? Not likely. So it would seem that the only way both Kaz and Sonny are traded is if the Rays know for certain a starting pitcher is coming back in one of those deals or another.

Seattle Writers On Strange Rumor; Gammons On Rays Moves

Cliff Lee, Reid Brignac, Scott Kazmir 8 Comments »

There is a very strange rumor that has been making the rounds involving the Rays in a three-team deal. We have seen it various forms, but the deal would look something like this…

  • Rays receive: Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez
  • Seattle receives:  Reid Brignac and Scott Kazmir
  • Cleveland receives: Brandon Morrow and Jeff Clement

Brignac and Kazmir for Lee and Martinez?!?! Who wouldn’t do that? The Indians wouldn’t do that. Not even close (Ed. note: there is another version out there that has Wade Davis also going to Cleveland, which makes the deal a little more palatable). The deal is so lopsided that it is laughable.

So why are we commenting on it here? Because for some strange reason, the Seattle press keeps writing about it. And yet, best we can tell, this rumored three-way deal was just made up on some message board or comments section of a blog.

Well, Brignac’s strange Saturday didn’t help.

To recap: Brignac was pulled from the first game of a double-header in the third inning. There was no apparent injury. This led to mini firestorm of rumors that Brignac was being included in the rumored three-way deal.

We later heard that Brignac was pulled for not hustling on a first inning pop-up, which is strange because he played the second inning in the field. We later heard that Brignac was pulled with a sore leg, which is strange because he played in the second game of the double-header.

No matter what the real reason, it was apparent that Brignac was not pulled because of a pending trade. Apparent to everybody except Geoff Baker of The Seattle Times.

Here’s something to think about, completely my speculation right now, but showing you how this stuff works. Let’s say there really was a three-way deal in the works between Tampa Bay, Cleveland…Maybe the M’s were all set to pull the trigger and that’s why Brignac was pulled…But maybe, as well, before finalizing a deal, Zduriencik wanted to see what Erik Bedard and company could do today. And then, after Bedard pulled a three-and-flee and the team fell behind 10-0, the M’s got on the phone and screamed “Hold everything!” and that’s why Brignac is back in there right now.

Basically Baker is suggesting that the deal was agreed to by all parties, but because the M’s fell behind in their Saturday game, the M’s called off the trade. Umm, ok. Wow.

Meanwhile, on the more sensible front, Peter Gammons writes about what the Rays may do between now and next season.

If you are the Rays, because you have a terrible stadium that’s hard for the fans to reach, you have hugely disappointing attendance and cannot trade Wade Davis and two other prospects for Victor Martinez and his $7 million salary next season. Not when your $63 million payroll will already jump for 2010, as Jason Bartlett is a four-year arbitration case and as B.J. Upton and Matt Garza will be super twos. “If we didn’t talk on everyone and explore every possibility, we’d be fools,” says Andrew Friedman, the Rays’ executive VP of baseball operations. So they’d deal Scott Kazmir, who to most clubs looks like a shadow of what he was two years ago, and at the end of the season they will likely see what they can get for Carl Crawford. And they’ll hold on to the prospects they consider keepers.

We know it is not as glamorous as adding Lee and/or Martinez, but you have to admit, it makes MUCH more sense. This team needs to cut payroll. They cannot maintain and they definitely cannot add.

Latest On Rays Trade Rumors

Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Scott Kazmir 19 Comments »

hangoverLast we checked in on the Rays trade deadline possibilities, we heard that the Rays were showing interest in Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, a couple of relievers, and Victor Martinez.

Halladay is probably off the table as it looks like he is headed to the Phillies, and the Indians don’t sound like they are interested in moving Lee or Martinez. The possibility of acquiring Lee seems like even more of a longshot when we consider they asked the Yankees for Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain. That means it will take a lot more than Wade Davis to land last year’s Cy Young winner.

We also have heard that if the Rays are to add a big name before the deadline, they would have to clear some payroll first. The big name we have heard so far is Scott Kazmir, whom the Angels were reportedly interested in.

Ken Rosenthal also insists the Angels are interested in Kazmir, noting that former Rays and current Angels pitching coach Mike Butcher is pushing for the Angels to make the deal.

However, the Angels claim that they have not even discussed the possibility of trading for Kazmir.

Meanwhile , Kazmir says he wants to remain with the Rays. Kazmir did sound a bit frustrated when he spoke about signing an extension with the Rays and now hearing trade rumors.

“I thought when I signed, it was kind of a bargain deal (for the team). And I’d be good to go, and I’d be here for a long time, at least until my contract ends,” he said. “But who knows? That’s baseball…You signed a deal with them. You want to show the team that invested the money in you that you’re worth every penny, and you’re going to go out there and prove to them that you are worth it,” he said. “That’s the one thing that kind of bothers you there. That’s the reason why I signed here. I wanted to be here.”

So, where does this leave the Rays with a week to go before the trade deadline? Well, after a 24-hour period where it seemed like a blockbuster deal might be on the horizon, it now looks more like the Rays roster will look the same on August 1st as it does right now. John Romano examined the Rays trade possibilities and concludes that standing pat may “make the most sense.”

But one thing we can count on: With the Rays in the thick of the playoff hunt, we are certain to hear many more of these rumors and notes over the next seven days.

Angels May Be Interested In Scott Kazmir

Andrew Friedman, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Scott Kazmir 1 Comment »

If the Rays are going to add either Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee, they most likely would have to also trade Scott Kazmir to free up payroll. Now we are hearing that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim near Disney Land may be interested.

One way the Rays could clear payroll would be to move lefty Scott Kazmir, whom the source said is of “some interest” to the Angels. Tampa Bay has been scouting the Los Angeles system recently, as reported earlier.

The same piece also says Andrew Friedman is “eager to do something.” Whatever that means.

More On Those Cliff Lee Rumors

Cliff Lee, David Price, Scott Kazmir No Comments »

Here is a small update on the Rays interest in ‘08 Cy Young winner Cliff Lee

  • Jayson Stark says that Lee is available but that the Indians are not that anxious to trade him. [via MLBTradeRumors]
  • Jon Paul Morosi says that the Rays may be trying to get a third team involved in the deal. Morosi adds that the Indians want Wade Davis, but so far the Rays have said “no”.
  • In the same link, Morosi says the Rays are also showing interest in Michael Wuertz of the A’s and Jason Frasor from Toronto, but not Rafael Betancourt from Cleveland.

The big question of course is: How does Cliff Lee fit into the rotation?

The short answer is “very nicely.” The long answer is more complicated. The Rays first choice may be to find a taker for Scott Kazmir. If that doesn’t happen, David Price seems like the odd man out. He was likely headed back to the bullpen to conserve his arm at some point, but July may be a little early for that. So then we have to think the best option is to send Price back to Durham and bring him back in September in much the same role he provided last year out of the bullpen.

Rays Kicking The Tires On Halladay And Lee

Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Wade Davis 7 Comments »

73394596CC025_Toronto_Blue_A week ago we laughed at the notion that the Rays would be players in the Roy Halladay market. This week we still think it is a long-shot, but we are starting to hear some buzz that the Rays have at least inquired as to what Halladay would cost.

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi report that the Rays have looked at Halladay, Cliff Lee and others but indicates that they would most likely have to trade away one of their big contracts to make a deal.

The Rays are engaged in a whirlwind of activity, investigating Lee, Halladay and numerous other options — “major, major stuff,” according to one source…Payroll flexibility remains a significant obstacle, and the Rays might need to move left-hander Scott Kazmir or another high-priced player to clear room for a major acquisition…There are no indications, however, that the Rays are discussing trades involving Kazmir, who is earning $6 million this season, $8 million in 2010 and $12 million in ‘11 with a $13.5 million or $2.5 million buyout for ‘12.

Still seems highly unlikely, and maybe Andrew Friedman is just doing his job by making courtesy calls. Keep in mind that in most of these cases, these teams are trying to shed payroll, so the Rays would seem like a not very good fit, if they are unable to add payroll.

Marc Topkin has some quotes from Joe Maddon on the subject.

Manager Joe Maddon would not discuss specifics, but he didn’t say anything to diminish the possibility Friedman was making inquiries…”He’s got some interesting things out there,” Maddon said. “He and I have talked, and we’ve talked about different things. You know him. He’s always got good ideas, and he’s definitely willing to take the plunge if somebody else is…It’s all good stuff. But like most years, nothing ever happens. So we’ll just see. And if nothing happens, I am fine. I’m good with our group.”

Meanwhile, Dave Cameron over at Fangraphs makes a strong case for the Rays trading for Lee.

Call up Mark Shapiro and blow him away with an offer. Stick Lee in front of Shields, Garza, Price/Kazmir, and Niemann and run down the big boys. You have talent coming out of your ears, and a real shot at winning the World Series this year. I know you love Wade Davis, but you can live without him – you have 18 other pitchers who could take his place in future seasons.

So, would Wade Davis be enough? If he is, we will drive Davis to Cleveland. But if the deal is Davis and ?, we need to see what the “and ?” is before screaming for Lee to the Rays.

Keep in mind that the next trade the Rays make sending a top prospect for a veteran, will be their first. There is no track record here except that it hasn’t happened. Will it happen this year? A week ago, we said ‘no way’. But ask us again next week.
