THE GOOD: James Shields. Things fell apart a it in the 8th, but by that time Shields had tossed 7 shutout innings with only 3 hits and no walks. In the first six innings, he faced one over the minimum and allowed only 1 leadoff hitter on base…Ben Zobrist. Zorilla provided the big blast, a 3-run home run in the 3rd.

THE BAD: Diesel Running Low. Rough night for Shawn Riggans who went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts and left 5 runners on base.

THE TELLING: Russ Springer’s save last night gives the Rays 9 different pitchers with at least one save…Last night’s win clinches a winning season for the Rays…Playing in the tough AL East has not been a problem for the Rays this season as they are 38-30 against East foes.

SUNBURST PLAYER OF THE GAME: James Shields

Rays Trade Deadline Oddsmakers

Brian Shouse, Reid Brignac, Scott Kazmir, Wade Davis 4 Comments »

hangoverWe are a little more than 48 hours from the trade deadline and for the first time ever, the Rays have been linked with just about every big name available. Of course that will happen when you are in contention and everybody loves your farm system.

So are the Rays buyers? Are they sellers? Are they cross-traders? Let’s take a look at the players that could be dealt and place some odds on a deal being made. One thing to keep in mind, we are still leaning towards nothing major happening. Remember, the next time the Rays acquire a big named player at the deadline will also be the first time…

Brian Shouse/Randy Choate – We are hedging our bets, but this is the deal we see as most likely. The Rays right now have two lefty specialists and they only need one. And this time of year, the only thing more valuable than a lefty relief specialist is a starting pitcher in his prime. Which one is moved? Depends on who is asking, but this should net the Rays a prosepct…90.0%

Scott Kazmir – The Rays want Cliff Lee and they may try to get Lee and Victor Martinez. but adding that salary requires cutting some excess money that is already in-house. Kazmir is tops on that list. But the problem the Rays face is that he is not good enough right now to be attractive to contenders and he makes too much money to be attractive to rebuilding teams. Will somebody bite after seeing his strong start last night? Will Rays still want to move him? The Rays won’t sell cheap. But they might sell medium…49.9%

Reid Brignac – Other teams will ask for Wade Davis. The Rays will offer Reid Brignac. There is some sentiment that the Indians could use a shortstop, but obviously they want the pitcher. But we can also see a situation where Kazmir stays and the Rays give up on Cliff Lee and instead go after bullpen help. Brignac might be the piece to get that done. Right now the odds are a little lower, but keep in mind that the Rays may only deal Kazmir if they know another deal is waiting. If Kazmir goes, this number jumps considerably…33.3%

Wade Davis – This is the guy everybody wants and for the first time, the Rays appear willing to move him. His strong numbers throughout the minors have taken a small step back this season. Not bad, but not great either. And if the Rays are willing to deal, that means there is something they don’t like. Like Brignac, Davis is likely only moved if Kazmir goes first, unless one thinks the Rays would move Davis for Victor Martinez…33.2%

Lance Cormier/Chad Bradford/Joe Nelson/Dan Wheeler – Again, take your pick, but one thing we know is that the Rays are deep in the bullpen and there are options in Durham. If somebody is desperate for relief help and the Rays cannot move one of the lefties, the Rays could easily live without one of these guys in return for a prospect and maybe some cash. And if the Rays feel the chances of making the playoffs are dwindling, this number may be higher…25.0%

Carlos Pena – This one just popped up on the radar yesterday and it makes sense. If the Rays are serious about cutting payroll, they have more options to fill Carl Crawford’s spot, but Pena makes just as much in 2010 and who would you rather keep? Finding a first baseman would certainly be easier than finding a Carl Crawford. Still, if the Rays fancy themselves contenders this season, trading a slugging first baseman would be a bit unusual…3.19%

Carl Crawford – Rays would move CC if given an offer that can’t refuse, but all indications are that a trade is more likely to happen after the season…1.0%

Jeremy Hellickson – Hellboy is the next big thing and unlike Wade Davis, he is still dominating, so there is no reason to think he is any more available than last year when the Rays gave an emphatic “NO” to all who asked…0.5%

Matt Moore/Nick Barnese – This is the next wave of great pitchers in the Rays system and while teams will certainly ask, we have to believe that they are untouchable…0.01%

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss No Offense And Giving Up On Getaway Day

Brian Shouse, Pat Burrell 8 Comments »

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Carl Crawford. That’s it. His solo home run was the only bright spot on the day.

THE BAD: Getaway Blues. In their last 16 road series, the Rays are now 4-12 in the final game of the series. They are 20-18 in all other road games...Pat Burrell. The Rays could only manage to get more than one runner on base in an inning twice, in the first and the sixth. The common theme in those two innings was Pat Burrell. In the first he ended the inning with a groundball back to the pitcher and the sixth he ended the inning by striking out…Offensive. In between the first and sixth innings, the Rays managed only 1 baserunner, an Evan Longoria leadoff walk in the fourth. He was quickly erased on a Ben Zobrist double-play.

THE TELLING: Carlos Pena was 6th in the lineup again…The Rays are now third in the AL in scoring after leading for most of the first-half.

Charlotte 7, Lakeland 2 (gm 1). Darin Downs is now 10-4 with a 2.21 ERA after holding Lakeland to 1 run in 5 innings…Brian Shouse allowed 1 run on 4 hits in 1 inning of work on his rehab assignment…Shawn O’Malley went 0-4 and Shawn Riggans started at catcher and went 0-1 with a walk.

Lakeland 2, Charlotte 0 (gm 2). Brian Flores dropped to 0-4 after giving up 2 runs in 3.2 innings in just his 3rd start of the season…Shawn O’Malley went 2-4 and Mike McCormick was 1-3.

Bowling Green 5, Delmarva 2 (11). Chris Andujar allowed 2 runs in 4.1 innings, striking out 6 and walking 1…Jake Jefferies went 2-5 with a strikeout.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Comebacks, Meltdowns And Pat The No Contact

Brian Shouse, Matt Garza, Scott Kazmir 5 Comments »

Rays Royals BaseballTime to bring back the GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

click above image for boxscore

THE GOOD: The Comeback Kids. Last year, the Rays entered the break reeling with a 7-game losing streak and fell to second place in the East. This year, it was just a 2-game losing streak, but it feels like the team has been reeling all season. Last year, it was a comeback win on the first game out of the break that got the team rolling once again. Might 3 straight come from behind wins and a sweep of the Royals do the same in ’09?…Double-Play to Save the Day. With the Rays trailing 3-2 in the 7th, the Royals loaded the bases with just 1 out. Grant Balfour enduced an inning-ending double-play to get out of the jam…JP Howell. 9 up, 9 down. Three straight saves. But he is still not the closer.

THE BAD: The Starting Pitching. The Rays started the second-half with their 3 most experienced starters, and none worked into the 7th inning. They allowed 11 runs in 17.1 innings. There is only so much the bullpen can do. The Rays will not make the playoffs unless they start getting more consistent work from their starters…Matt Garza. Garza loaded the bases with no outs in the second. He then got the next 2 batters without allowing a run and got ahead of David DeJesus 1-2. But 3 pitches later, Garza walked in the go-ahead run. A meltdown of epic proportions. Garza walked 5 in 5 innings and seemed to be battling himself all day…Pat the No Contact. Despite showing some flashes of brilliance recently, it wasn’t there on Sunday as Pat Burrell went 0-4 with 4 strikeouts and 5 runners left on base…

THE TELLING: Sure it was only the third game after the break, but the Rays don’t have an off-day this upcoming week. So it was a little surprising that Joe Maddon went with his normal starting lineup during a day-game…The Rays are now 51-41, 4.5 games back in the AL East and 3.5 in back of the Yankees who apparently never lose. The Yankees and Rays are also 1-2 in the Wild Card race with the Rangers 5 back and Seattle 5.5 back. Anybody think either of those teams are a threat?…CoolStandings.com gives the Rays a 41.7% shot at making the playoffs. PECOTA says it is 25.5%.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss King David’s Debut, A Vomit-Inducing Loss And A Crowded DL

Akinori Iwamura, Brian Shouse, David Price, Jason Bartlett, Randy Choate 12 Comments »

Bay Rays Indians Baseball

Time to bring back the GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

click above image for boxscore

THE GOOD: King David. He showed flashes of brilliance. After a walk and a double to start the game, Price struck out the next 3 batters to get out of the jam without allowing a run…Carl Crawford. 1-4 with a walk, and he is now 29-29 on stolen bases…Gabe Gross. Drove in 3,  was on base 3 times and added his second home run in 3 days.

THE BAD: Prince David. It is a learning curve, and there is much to learn. First and foremost, batters leading off an inning were on base 3 of 4 times, twice via walk. The biggest disappointment was the leadoff walk in the second inning on 4 pitches. He was just staked to a 5-0 lead and that was the worst possible start to the inning. At that point he should be pitching to contact. He also seemed a little too amped up. As a starting pitcher, Price is likely to be most effective throwing his fastball 94-95. Last night he was consistently throwing the fastball 97-98, topping out at 99. He can do that in short stints but not over 6-7 innings. Last night, you could see the toll as his fastball was 92-94 in the 4th inning. Which leads us to his pitch efficiency. Price had to be pulled in the 4th inning after throwing 100 pitches, due in large part to 5 walks…The Bullpen. We don’t have the time, the space or the inclination to properly express how Bad the bullpen was last night and we don’t have the heart to list out every culprit. Let’s just say it was ugly, Don Mossi ugly and that sound you hear? That is us pounding our head on the keyboard…Red. We are all for honoring fallen troops on Memorial Day. God knows the sacrifices my family has made. But David Price makes his 2009 debut and we have to see him wearing a red cap (above)? Atrocious.

THE TELLING: This is just not a good team. Good teams do not blow 10-run leads. They don’t blow 6-runs leads in the 9th innings. And they do not blow ANY leads to bad teams.

DEVIL DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • As feared, Akinori Iwamura will be out for the year with a torn ACL. [The Heater]
  • Add Brian Shouse to the list of players on the DL. Randy Choate was added to the 40-man roster and promoted to take Shouse’s spot. Shouse has a strained elbow and does not expect to be out very long. Fernando Perez was moved to the 60-day DL to allow for the addition of Choate to the 40-man roster. The Rays now have 8 players on the DL. [Rays Report]
  • Jason Bartlett is expected back in the lineup tonight after missing one game with a mild ankle sprain. [St. Pete Times]
  • Joe Maddon’s new contract is now official and will keep him in a Rays uniform through the 2012 season. [Rays Report]
  • Baseball Analysts breaks down David Price’s first start. It reads an awful lot like “The Bad” from above, only more detail and several hundred more words. [Baseball Analysts]

  • An amazing read on the thought process behind Fernando Perez’ walk-up music and we love the fact that he used the theme song from “The Price Is Right” while playing in college. [New York Times]
  • Randy Choate made his first appearance in the big leagues since 2007, and still hasn’t retired a batter since 2006. [Rays Report]

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Joe’s Maddoning Overthinkability

Brian Shouse, Carlos Pena, Joe Maddon No Comments »

Red Sox Rays Baseball

Time to bring back the GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

click above image for boxscore

THE GOOD: Carlos Pena. Pena hit his league-leading 11th home run of the season…Carl Crawford’s arm. We have long been hard on Crawford’s arm noting that CC was gold glove from bat to glove, but spaghetti armed after that. Last night on a flyball to left, Dustin Pedroia tagged up. CC didn’t throw The Hobbit out, but he did the next best thing.

THE BAD: Maddoning Genius. Brian Shouse has allowed a career OPS split of .858 against righties and .587 against lefties. He is the epitome of a lefty specialist. A LOOGY, if you will. So, of course, Joe Maddon would never bring Shouse in to face the righty Kevin Youkilis with the bases loaded and the game still in doubt at 7-5. Wrong.  Double. 2 runs scored. Game over. For a manager that preaches so much about percentages and trends and charts. The dude sure can overthink things sometimes and end up doing the exact opposite….Dioner Navarro. We honestly think Navi has completely forgotten how to be a catcher. Last night with Gabe Kapler trying to throw a runner out at home, rather than step in front of plate, Navi tried to field the ball in foul territory behind the base runner. Of course, the ball hit the base runner and was kicked towards the dugout…Carl Crawford’s arm. Seriously though. We don’t care if Crawford fell into the stands making the catch. Nobody should ever be able to tag up to third on a flyball to left.

THE TELLING: Michel Hernandez will get his second start of the series today…The Rays still have a shot to win this 4-game series with James Shields on the mound.

SUNBURST PLAYER OF THE GAME: Carlos Pena. He now leads the league in home runs and was on base 4 times last night.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss The Super-Utility Of Zorilla

Ben Zobrist, Brian Shouse, Eduardo Morlan, Jake McGee 5 Comments »

phppIdpZ0Around these parts, we occasionally poke fun at the new vogue term “super utility” player. Back in the day, players like Jose Oquendo would regularly play all positions and we don’t ever remember him being called “super.” Nowadays, if a player has more than one glove in his locker, he is a “super-utility” player. And yet nobody can explain to us what the difference is between a utility player and one that is super.

Yesterday, in our post in which we broke down spring playing time, one commenter (thanks Charles) noticed that Ben Zobrist had played every position this spring except catcher. In fact we will take it a step further…Zorilla has started a game at every position this spring except catcher. And we wouldn’t be surprised if he was third on the regular season depth chart at that position also.

That, my fellow Raysheads, is super-utility.

DEVIL DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • If there is a best-case scenario for Tommy John surgery, Jake McGee may have found it. The injury was clean and the surgery was clean and to date he hasn’t had any setbacks and there is hope his elbow will be stronger than prior to the surgery. He will start the season in June or July with Port Charlotte and hopes to work his way up to double-A by the end of the season and expects to be 100% next spring. [MLB]
  • The Brewers have designated Eddie Morlan for assignment, in essence offering him back to the Rays for the fee of $25K. No decision has been made yet, but we assume he will be back with the club in a few days. [Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel]

  • James Shields pitched against the Twins triple-A team throwing 5.1 shutout innings, giving up only 1 hit and striking out 5. Shields needed to pitch yesterday to stay on schedule to start the opening day with normal rest. [Tampa Tribune]
  • Matt Joyce also participated in the minor league game at Rays camp yesterday going 0-2 with a walk and a strike out. He said it felt great to get out on the field. [Tampa Tribune]

Brian Shouse, TVI No Comments »

Man, we can already smell that fresh-cut grass. Yummy.

DEVIL DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • In case you missed our update yesterday afternoon, the Rays DFA’d Juan Salas to make room for Brian Shouse…It seems like only yesterday when Salas, a converted infielder allowed only 2 earned runs and struck out 52 in 34.2 double-A innings. Then the following season Salas got caught injecting himself with idiot-enhancing drugs, and he was never the same. [Rays Report]

  • Troy Percival has already thrown off the mound a “couple of times” during his rehab. [MLB]
  • Joe Maddon has been “refining his philosophy” this off-season and already has his new catch-phrase to replace “9=8.” Maddon assures that this year’s motivational tool will not be as covert. [St. Pete Times]

  • Rays of Light has updated their roster projection. [Rays of Light]

Trade In The Works

Brian Shouse, Juan Salas No Comments »

[Update: 7:04pm] It was VinSalas all along…Marc Lancaster is reporting that Juan Salas has been designated for assignment to make room for Shouse. Why wait a week? Because that is what the Rays do.

Shouse will make $1.35 million this season and the team has an option for $1.9 million next year. The option has a $200K buyout.

[11:35am] Almost a week later and we are still waiting for an official announcement on the signing of Brian Shouse.

At this point all we know is that the 40-year old, side-arming lefty has agreed to a one-year deal with a team option for 2010. We do not know how much he will make this season, nor do we know who will be removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Shouse.

So, if Shouse has passed his physical, why are we still waiting for the official announcement?(…)
