[THE HANGOVER] Kazmir Gives Up Game At Crucial Moment

Aki Iwamura, Ben Zobrist, Carlos Lee, Carlos Pena, Evan Longoria, Jason Bartlett, Joe Maddon, Justin Ruggiano, New Stadium, Scott Kazmir, Stuart Sternberg 2 Comments »

THE GOOD: Evan Longoria’s home run in the 2nd, his 12th. We don’t want to stretch this comparison too much, but Dirtbag’s stance and swing have always reminded us of Alex Rodriguez and both hitters are very similar in that they both generate an immense amount of power despite having a very easy swing. Longoria just looks like he is flicking the bat at the ball and next thing we know the ball is flying over the center field wall.

THE BAD: All of the Astros’ runs came on home runs and both home runs were hit with 2 strikes. We would love to say that the Rays were 2 pitches from winning this game 2-0. And we would love to say that Scott Kazmir pitched great outside of those 2 pitches. Both are true, but neither means diddly. Hunter Pence’s solo home run in the 5th can be forgiven as the Rays still had the lead. But with Carlos Lee up with a runner on and 2 outs in the 6th. Kid K absolutely cannot give up a 2-run home run in that situation. That was the most important at bat of the game and Kaz failed.

THE TELLING: This was the first series loss at home for the Rays since April when they dropped 3 of their first 4 home series. They had won 9 series in a row at the Trop…The Rays now have a 3 game lead in the wild card over the A’s and 3.5 games over the Yankees.

  • As expected, the Evan Longoria-as-the-backup-shortstop era did not last long. After yesterday’s game, Justin Ruggiano was demoted to Durham and Ben Zobrist will be called up to take his place. With Jason Bartlett’s wife about to give birth, Zobrist will fill in for a day or two. [Rays Report]
  • The St. Pete Times has a still-image of the questionable slide by Carlos Lee in which Joe Maddon though Lee grabbed Aki Iwamura while trying to turn a double play. [St. Pete Times]
  • Carlos Pena will participate in pregame drills on Tuesday in Miami and is expected to come off the DL either this weekend or the beginning of next week. [Tampa Tribune]
  • Stuart Sternberg showed up for last night’s game (wearing a Rays jersey) and once again said that the Rays would be willing to add pieces down the stretch as long as it is “something that’s right.”…In other words, the Rays are not going to deviate very far from the plan that has gotten them to where they are. Keep in mind that the Rays are playing with “house money” in 2008. The team is at least a year ahead of schedule in terms of competing. The Rays are not about to get into a bidding war with other teams for high priced players, but they may be willing to add mid-level talent to fill in holes…And for those that believe CC Sabathia will never happen. Consider that the Rays could bring him in and then let him walk at the end of the year and take 2 compensatory draft picks. So the question then becomes: Are the prospects given up worth the two draft picks that will come later? [Bradenton Herald]
  • Stuart Sternberg also noted that if the proposed waterfront stadium fails to pass, the Rays would remain in the Trop for “at least four years and not 14 at this point.” [The Heater]
  • Finally, Stuart Sternberg made an interesting comment about the DH rule in the AL. Noting that it hurts a small-market club like the Rays because “We don’t have the cash to pay a guy who doesn’t field.” [The Heater]
  • Her Rays recaps yesterday’s loss in a way that only they can. [Her Rays]

[THE HANGOVER] Evan Longoria Can Marry Our Daughter*

THE GOOD: There is a video on YouTube in which Dwayne Staats compares Evan Longoria defensively, to Mike Schmidt, who won 10 gloves. But we wonder if Schmidt ever made a play to win a game the way Dirtbag did last night. Playing deep, with the tying run on third, Reed Johnson tried to bunt his way on first pushing the ball just to the left of the mound. Longoria ran in, barehanded the ball and made an off-balance throw to first base that was scooped on one bounce by Willy Aybar. Game over…What a top if the 9th. What a great catch heading face first into the wall, by Justin Ruggiano in left field for the first out. That out was just the first play that may have saved the game. Later on was not the best time in the world for Dioner Navarro’s second passed ball of the season as it lead to a run to make it 3-2, but another passed ball took a Rays bounce off the backstop to hold the runner at third and saved the lead…Scott Kazmir did not allow a hit until 1 out in the 5th inning, despite not having his best stuff…The Rays are lucky that the Rays tank beyond the right-center field wall is shatterproof as Evan Longoria’s solo home run to lead off the 6th went off the side glass…With 2 outs in the top of the 7th and a runner on second, Dioner Navarro threw out Reed Johnson trying to steal third. It even looked like Johnson got a bit of a shuffling lead before the pitch and he was still thrown out to end the inning…In the bottom of the 7th, a ground ball that would have been a single up the middle hits the pitching rubber and jumps straight up in the air. The pitcher tried to field the ball and throw to first. Aki was safe by a mile, but the throw went into the right field corner and Aki was on third to lead off the inning. Aki would later score what ultimately would be the decisive run.

THE BAD: Scott Kazmir may have not allowed a hit until 1 out in the 5th, but he would only record 1 more out after that, as he was pulled with 2 outs in the 5th. Yes the bullpen is better, but the Rays cannot afford too many nights with the bullpen having to throw 4+ innings…BJ Upton’s stolen base to end the first inning wasn’t bad on paper. With 2 outs, he has to try and get into scoring position. But for Upton to be thrown out by 10 feet was pretty bad…Bases loaded in the 3rd with only 1 out. A dribbler in the mound by BJ Upton led to a force at the plate followed by a strikeout by Eric Hinske and the Rays couldn’t score…In the 7th, the Rays had 5 batters reach base and only scored 1 run including the second runner thrown out at home in the game.

THE TELLING: The attendance for last night’s game was 31,607. We are just guessing, but that seems like it would be a record for a non-home opener, non-Red Sox, non-Yankees, weekday contest…Carl Crawford will be back on the field tomorrow night after completing his suspension. Aki Iwamura and Edwin Jackson have both appealed their suspensions. Jackson will make his next start on Saturday…

With the Red Sox loss last night, the Rays pull even with Pink Hat Nation in the loss column. The Rays still maintain their 2 game lead in the Wild Card race over the A’s.

  • The Rays still have not received official word as to when Edwin Jackson will begin his suspension, which will likely be either tonight or Thursday (at the conclusion of James Shields’ suspension). Tonight is also the last game of Carl Crawford’s suspension with Aki Iwamura to begin his tomorrow. [St. Pete Times]

  • In addition to the first to the Trop for former Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella, tonight’s game also marks the first return to the Trop for the Devil Rays original manager Larry Rothschild, who is now the Cubs pitching coach. [St. Pete Times]
  • Lou Piniella said that if he had stayed with the Devil Rays for another year or two, he probably wouldn’t be the managing today. [Southtown Star]

”I was crazy enough to think I could win anywhere with anything,” said Piniella, who won two World Series rings as a player in New York and another as a manager in Cincinnati. ”Not crazy, but confident in my ability…At that time, you go on a road trip to New York, Boston and Toronto, and if you win one game in each city, it’s a good trip,” Piniella said. ”From a professional standpoint, I wasn’t prepared for that. I’d won everywhere I’d been. I didn’t enjoy the losses. And it wasn’t going to get any better, so I got out.”

  • Gerry Hunsicker was on The Show with Rob Dibble and Kevin Kennedy and talked about making deals at the trading deadline…Hunsicker said “…deals arent easy to make, atleast significant deals and you’re probably going to have to overpay regardless of what you get because of the supply and demand factor…” Overpaying is not something the Rays ever want to do, so don’t expect any major deals from the Rays before the trading deadline. [THE HANGOVER] Kazmir Keeps Pitch Count In Check, Wins 6th

Aki Iwamura, Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, Coco Crisp Is CooCoo, Edwin Jackson, James Shields, Jason Hammel, Jon Lester, Jonny Gomes, Scott Kazmir, Sean Casey, Troy Percival 2 Comments »

THE GOOD: 8, 13, 12, 13, 20, 14, 10. That is how many pitches Scott Kazmir threw in each of the first 7 innings for a total of 90. That allowed Kid K to come out for the 8th inning. Only one inning with 15 or more is a very good sign. Kazmir averaged 17.5 pitches per inning in ’07 and was at 16.2 pitches per inning this season, prior to last night…Rays batters walked 4 times and struck out only 5 times against one of the better starting pitchers in baseball. In the Red Sox series the Rays struck out 28 times in 3 games with only 8 walks.

THE BAD: BJ Upton did hit a home run and Carl Crawford had a rare triple, but the top 4 batters in the lineup were only a combined 3-19.

THE TELLING: Evan Longoria’s home run in the 5th inning landed in the club-level, an area that had only been reached 13 times previously. It was fun watching the left fielder take one step back and then realize it was wasted effort…

  • The suspensions were handed for Thursday night’ brawl. James Shields (6 games), Jonny Gomes (5), Edwin Jackson (5), Carl Crawford (4) and Akinori Iwamura (3). The suspensions are staggered so that the Rays will not be without more than 1 position player and 1 pitcher at a time. However, Shields and Gomes were start their suspensions last night, but chose to appeal. The other will likely do the same when their suspensions are set to begin. Three Sox were also suspended including Jon Lester (5 games), Coco Crispy (7) and Sean Casey (3). [St. Pete Times]

[THE HANGOVER] It Was Edwin Jackson Vs Josh Beckett. What Were You Expecting?

Aki Iwamura, Carlos Pena, Coco Crisp, Evan Longoria, Joe Maddon, Justin Ruggiano, Randy Johnson, Seth McClung 3 Comments »

THE GOOD: (see “THE TELLING”)

THE BAD: (see “THE TELLING”)

THE TELLING: C’mon people. Think about this for a second. It was Edwin Jackson versus Josh Beckett in Fenway Park. If they played that game 100 times, the Rays would win it 1 time and only because Beckett would be struck by lightning in the first inning and Manny being Manny would accidently hit a 3-run home run for the Rays…Look, it’s not in our nature to be mysterious. But we can’t talk about it and we can’t talk about why.
