Rumors Du Jour: Dunn, Werth (UPDATE)

Adam Dunn, Jayson Werth, Trade Rumors 6 Comments »

[Update] Here is a quote (via Tommy Rancel) from Dunn about DHing

I don’t want to DH. I don’t want to DH. If I have to DH, I’ll probably go home.

[10:17am] The non-waiver trade deadline is Saturday, so let’s get caught up on what the Ray may or may not do…

  • Earlier we heard that the Rays are still a possibility for Adam Dunn. However, Ken Rosenthal reports (scroll to 12:55am) that Dunn is “adamant about his reluctance to become a designated hitter.” You have to wonder about a player that is not willing to DH for two months in exchange for a shot at going to the World Series. Dunn will be a free agent at the end of the season.
  • Rosenthal also adds that Jayson Werth is no longer available after Shane Victorino was injured and placed on the DL.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Maddonology, Return Of The Bats And Zorilla’s Back

THE GOOD: Maddonology. For the second straight night, Joe Maddon walked Miguel Cabrera with runners on 1st and 2nd to put the tying run on third base. And once again, Grant Balfour came up huge. This time inducing a flyball to end the inning…Offensive Rebound. Still a little shaky, but every Rays hitter that came to the plate got at least one hit. Evan Longoria led the way with 3 hits, including a 2-run home run in the 8th that gave the Rays a little breathing room…Carlos Pena. In the 1st, the Tigers shifted against Pena allowing the runner on second to take third unchallenged. But in 3rd inning, with Carl Crawford on second, the Tigers did not shift against Pena and he delivered a basehit between first and second to score Crawford.

THE BAD: Abusing Soriano? After 42 pitches the past 2 nights, it is hard to believe he will be available for the noon start today. Which of course raises the question of whether Joe Maddon could have used somebody else in the 9th with a 3-run lead…Emo Squeeze Fail. Joe Maddon’s “safety squeeze” is not your typical safety squeeze and it bit the Rays in the ass last night. Willy Aybar was thrown out at home on Jason Bartlett’s squeeze attempt. JoeMa loves overly aggressive baserunning and last night it cost the Rays.

THE TELLING: Ben Zobrist was removed from the game with a lower back strain (apparently from carrying Gabe Kapler all season) and will not play today…BJ Upton hopes to return Friday. Joe Maddon says Saturday or Sunday but that he could pinch-hit before then…The Rays at 62-38 are 24 games above .500. Even if they only play .500 the rest of the way, they will finish 93-69. If they go 33-29, they will finish 95-67. In the Wild Card ERA, no AL team has ever won 95 games and failed to make the playoffs…Evan Longoria’s single in the 4th snapped an 0-19 skid…Rafael Soriano’s 28th save is a career-high…Fewer than 1,000 tickets remain for each of this weekend’s games against the Yankees.

WHERE THEY STAND: The Rays are 62-38, 2 games behind the Yankees and 5 games ahead of the Red Sox. After 100 games in 2008, the Rays were 59-41.

Stark: Rays Looking To Upgrade Offense; Upton Not Likely To Be Traded (Yet)

Adam Dunn, BJ Upton, Cliff Lee, Jeremy Hellickson, Josh Willingham 29 Comments »

Earlier this week we heard that the Rays might be interested in trading for Cliff Lee. Now we learn from Jayson Stark that the Rays have inquired about a couple of hitters

Despite an eruption of rumors linking them to Cliff Lee, the Rays are spending almost all of their time shopping for bats these days. Two names sources say they’ve inquired about: Josh Willingham and Adam Dunn, reports ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark.

Clubs that have spoken with the Rays say they’re not even focused on adding offense at any particular position…their focus is to “just get a bat,” said an official of one club, “and make the pieces fit later.”

Certainly Lee would be a big boost to the Rays rotation, but it does make more sense that the Rays first priority would be to add a bat. In fact, if Lee doesn’t work out, we can’t imagine there is even a plan B for the rotation that does not include the name “Jeremy Hellickson.” Read the rest of this entry »

THE GOOD: BJ Upton. After an 0-17 stretch, Bossman has 4 hits in his last 7 at bats.

THE BAD: DevilRaysian Bullpen. In one recent 25-game stretch, the Rays gave up 8 home runs in the 8th inning or later that tied the game or put the Rays behind. They did it again last night thanks to Dan Wheeler.

THE TELLING: 12,514. As in the attendance last night…Ichiro’s home run was long, but it wasn’t that long. It had a “true distance” of 402 feet. There have been 57 home runs at the Trop this season that have traveled farther.

SUNBURST PLAYER OF THE GAME: BJ Upton

[THE HANGOVER] Pat Burrell And The Rays Could Be A Marriage Of Convenience

Adam Dunn, Andrew Friedman, Bobby Abreu, Garret Anderson, Jason Giambi, Ken Griffey Jr, Milton Bradley, Pat Burrell 5 Comments »

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe feels the Rays will add one of Jason Giambi, Milton Bradley, Pat Burrell or Adam Dunn.

Seems as if the prices for these guys are dropping rapidly, and the Rays might be able to add a pretty good hitter to replace Cliff Floyd and/or Rocco Baldelli.

It may seem that way on the surface, but some of these pieces are going to start falling very quickly. To no surprise, we are now hearing that the A’s and Giambi will soon be talking contract. And when push comes to shove, we feel the Cubs won’t let Bradley get away. Bradley may prefer the situation in St. Pete, but at some point the Cubs offer will be too much money to leave on the table.

Of course, that still leaves Burrell and Dunn, both of whom would provide the “impact bat” Andrew Friedman is seeking. But other teams like the Yankees and Angels may become interested if they fail to land either Mark Teixeira or Manny Ramirez. This could force the Rays to become more active in their pursuit of Burrell or Dunn.

And now Jon Heyman is reporting that the Rays and Burrell “are talking” and Heyman calls Burrell a “real possibility” for the Rays.

Burrell originally sought a three-year deal, but in a tough outfield/DH market he might have to settle for a one-year deal. Burrell’s outfield defense has slipped in recent years, but the Rays are mostly looking for offense.

Heyman also adds Bobby Abreu, Ken Griffey and Garret Anderson to the list of targets for the Rays, although this group is clearly “plan B.”

So if Burrell could stand to make more money from playoff-caliber teams like the Angels and Yankees, then why talk to the Rays now? Why not wait? Because the worst-case scenario may scare Burrell.

What if the Angels don’t want Burrell and the Yankees get Manny? What if Giambi signs a deal with the A’s for only $8-9 million, thus lowering an already low bar? And what if the Rays instead sign a Dunn or Griffey, taking a potent offense that will make a DH look very good in 2009, out of the bidding? If this scenario plays-out, Burrell could be forced to sign with a second-division team with a weak offense that will hurt his numbers in 2009 and hurt his chances of making a big score in next season’s free agent market. And he will have to sign for less than he could get from the Rays now.

While we liked the idea of Giambi or Bradley in a Rays’ uniform, we never thought it was a real possibility. But with the current state of the market, Pat Burrell and the Rays could be a marriage of convenience for both sides.

  • Another day, another feature piece on the Rays in the New York Times. This time they take a look at the staying power of the team in the AL East, noting that core of the team could be unchanged in 2009 and beyond. However, Gerry Hunsicker reiterated that due to financial limitations, the team is always “trying to trade people a year too soon than a year too late.”. The piece also speculates that Scott Kazmir could be traded along with one or more of the arbitration-eligible players (Edwin Jackson?)…In the piece it is indicated that the Rays likely turned a profit for the first time under Stuart Sternberg thanks to reaching the World Series.
