According to Marc Topkin, Joe Maddon’s contract talks are “progressing.”

Maddon is in the final year of a contract that will pay him approximately $1.3 million in 2012. And like the Rays key players, Maddon is due for a significant raise.

We have speculated previously that Maddon’s next deal will probably be similar to Joe Girardi’s 3-year, $9 million deal, which is still well-below the 10-year, $50 million contract Mike Scioscia signed with the Angels.

Willy Aybar Will Sit In Jail For 3 Months Awaiting Trial

Willy Aybar No Comments »

Willy Aybar’s latest arrest for domestic assault has landed him in jail for (at least) the next three months. This report comes from Dominican Today that reports Aybar has been sent to jail to await his trial due to his status as a repeat scumbag offender.

A National District Court Monday night sent Major League Baseball player Willy Aybar to spend three months prison to await trial on charges of battering his wife Brunilda Victoria Garcia…The prosecutors said Aybar is a repeat offender in domestic violence and also accused him of striking two assistant DAs, prompting Permanent Attention Court judge Alejandro Vargas to send him to the jail at Najayo, San Cristóbal (south)

By our count, this is the third time the former Rays utility player has been arrested for domestic assault, one of which landed his wife in intensive care.

His wife has recanted her story, however prosecutors want to proceed with the case.

Guess who has been charged with his beating his girlfriend and assaulting a police officer? Willy Aybar (of course).

This is at least the third time Aybar has been charged in a domestic abuse situation, one of which left his wife in intensive care.

According to the GM of Aybar’s Dominican team, Aybar has been working with Psychologists and that the team had done “everything that could be done,” but that Aybar left the program a few days before this incident, “and look what happened.”

Willy Aybar Arrested For Assaulting His Wife…Again

Willy Aybar 3 Comments »

According to KIRO TV in Seattle, former Rays utility man Willy Aybar was arrested on Sunday for assaulting his wife, who was discovered bleeding from a bite mark on her face…

The King County Sheriff’s Office said detectives arrested Aybar at about 2 a.m. at the SeaTac Hilton. According to a King County Sheriff’s Office incident report, police responded to a call from hotel staff about a fight and injury in one of the rooms. Police arrived to find an “extremely intoxicated” Aybar at the hotel’s front entrance who told officers he got into a fight with his “baby mama” and “everything was fine.” According to the report, the woman said she and Aybar had been married for three years, but Aybar referred to her as his “baby mama.” Aybar agreed to go up to the room to make sure his wife was OK, police said. Once in the room, police found drops of blood around the bathroom and blood-soaked rags in the trash…The victim was crying and holding a bloody towel to her face and had a cut lip and an abrasion on her forehead and cheek…Aybar’s wife, who did not speak English, told a Spanish-speaking officer that Aybar bit her cheek while they were fighting over holding their son, 13-month-old Willy Jr., the report said. She would not explain how she received the other injuries, police said…When asked if he bit his wife, Aybar told police, “she bit me first,” the report said.

This is at least the second time Aybar has been arrested for domestic assault, and possibly the third. And on Read the rest of this entry »

Now We Know Why Nobody Signed Willy Aybar: He May Have Been In Prison

Willy Aybar 14 Comments »

Yesterday Willy Aybar signed with the Edmonton Capitals of the Independent North American League. We had been wondering why no Major League team would even give Aybar a minor league deal.

Turns out it may have been because Aybar was sentenced to three months in prison in the Dominican Republic after he beat his wife. According to a report from his home town, Aybar’s wife ended up in intensive care for an extended period of time, in critical condition.

Here is the translated news story that ran in January on a news site from Aybar’s home town…

Three months of preventive detention were imposed today in the morning January 30, the player of GdesLigas Willy Aybar, for violating a restraining order and hit his wife.

Ms. Aybar, hit that remain in intensive care, despite being confined to her home with normal and in critical condition, because the family did not want to keep it inside, to avoid comments that could damage the reputation of a player.

However, this time the slugger’s Licey Tigers, Willy Aybar has been put behind bars for 3 months, which sentence was issued on this day at the request of the prosecutor of Family Protection, Peña Marinelis his lawyer Jorge de Los Santos, asked Judge Milton

Cabrera, a review of the case, but lawyers commented that it is unlikely to be released, because it violated a provision that prevented him from approaching the home of Mrs. Aybar, because previously had beaten and released for payment of a financial guarantee of 300 thousand dollars, I pay cash. El palacio de Justicia de la ciudad de Bani estuvo hoy muy concurrido en la mañana por seguidores del pelotero. The Palace of Justice in the city of Bani was very popular today in the morning for baseball fans.

As mentioned in the story, this is not the first time Aybar has run afoul of the law when it comes to his wife. Aybar was arrested in 2008 for abusing his wife just after he signed with the Rays.

If Aybar started his sentence immediately and

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss The Home Run Pitch, McGee’s Fading Hopes And Jeter Buying The Rays

Tim Beckham

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: James Shields. “Big Blast” Shields pitched 3 innings. That is good because apparently he wasn’t in the game long enough to work on his home run pitch. He finished with just one hit and 1 walk allowed. No runs, no Ks…Joe Cruz. Cruz made his spring debut a successful one with a 1-2-3 4th inning. Cruz hadn’t pitched in a game in 10 months after having surgery last year…Tim Beckham. Beckham started at shortstop and contributed a double a walk and drove in the Rays only run.

THE BAD: Freddy Garcia. Yes, Freddy Garcia, was the Yankees starting pitcher. And the players that could be in the Rays opening day starting lineup went 4-19.

THE TELLING: Another outing for Jake McGee against the minor leaguers. McGee pitched the 8th inning, giving up one unearned run. Right now it doesn’t look like Joe Maddon has any plans to have McGee on the opening day roster…Alex Torres, part of the Scott Kazmir trade, will start today against the Twins…Jeremy Hellickson threw a 44-pitch bullpen session that went well…Jeff Niemann will start a “B” game (an unofficial spring game) today to get some work in.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: Would anybody be surprised if Derek Jeter was a minority owner of the Rays?…One of Joe Maddon’s theme road trips will apparently be “skinny jeans.” This will be worth it just to see Kelly Shoppach and Jeff Niemann dressed like they are going to play at CBGBs (RIP)…Whatever happened to Willy Aybar? He apparently left his winter league team early and is still unsigned. In fact we haven’t even heard of any teams being interested. Seems strange for a guy with a decent OBP and can play several positions.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss The End Of The Navi-Era And Free Agency For Howell And Aybar

Andy Sonnanstine, Dan Johnson, Dioner Navarro, JP Howell, Lance Cormier, Willy Aybar 8 Comments »

More donuts for the rest of the Rays! We have known for a while that Dioner Navarro would not be back in 2011. But yesterday the door hit him in the ass. There is probably a repair man fixing the door as you read this.

Yesterday was the deadline to tender contracts to players not under contract with less than six years experience. The Rays chose to non-tender Dioner Navarro , JP Howell, Willy Aybar and Lance Cormier. All four are now free agents. The Rays did tender Dan Johnson and Andy Sonnanstine.

While Navarro will not be back, there is a good chance the Rays will re-sign Howell and will try to re-sign Cormier and Aybar.  Howell, Cormier and Aybar were likely non-tendered  because the Rays think they will sign for less than what they would have received through arbitration. In other words, the Rays want those players to take a paycut, something that an arbitrator would not have done.

Rays Decline 2011 Options On Wheeler, Aybar, Add Johnson

Dan Wheeler, Elliot Johnson, Willy Aybar 3 Comments »

In a couple of moves that we have been speculating about, the Rays today announced that they have declined the 2011 options on Dan Wheeler and Willy Aybar. And they have added Elliot Johnson to the 40-man roster.

Wheeler’s option would have paid him $4 million in 2011. Instead the Rays bought out the option for $1 million and Wheeler is now a free agent. Look for the Rays to try and re-sign Wheeler for around $2 million which, with the buyout, would save the Rays $1 million.

Aybar’s 2011 option was for $2.2 million. The Rays bought out that option for $275K. Unlike Wheeler, Aybar is still under the Rays control and will be arbitration-eligible. Look for him to make $1.5-1.7 million in 2011, saving the Rays about $500K.

Johnson would have Read the rest of this entry »

Rocco Suffering From Sore Left Roster Spot, Replaced By Aybar

Desmond Jennings, Rocco Baldelli, Willy Aybar 11 Comments »

Yesterday, we thought it was a bit strange that Rocco Baldelli was on the ALDS roster and Willy Aybar was not. Well, it turns out, Joe Maddon may have just wanted Rocco for game 1 to face the lefty Cliff Lee.

Marc Topkin is reporting that the Rays today removed Rocco from the ALDS roster for medical reasons, and replaced him with Aybar. Aybar will DH today. Also, Ben Zobrist is playing first base today with Carlos Pena out of the lineup. Desmond Jennings will start in right field.

We can’t help but wonder if Read the rest of this entry »
