[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Spring Invites, CC As Fielder, And Owing The State Some Money

Carl Crawford, Hak-Ju Lee, The Trop, Tim Beckham No Comments »

The Rays have extended Spring Training invitations (has a player ever declined a spring training “invitation”?) to shortstops Tim Beckham and Hak-Ju Lee, catchers Nevin Ashley and Craig Albernaz, and pitchers Ricky Orta, Ryan Reid, Bryan Augenstein and Marquis Fleming.

We’re glad the Rays are more patient than we are. Because if it were up to us, Beckham would be the opening day shortstop for the Rays. He can’t be worse offensively than what the Rays had in 2011. Just give him a shot to sink or swim.

  • The Rays may be forced to return $33 million to the state because they haven’t been housing the homeless at Tropicana Field on nights in which the stadium is not being used. This is just a guess, but it sounds like backlash against the dubious means used by the Marlins to get the city and county to finance their new playground. Also, it is not clear that the Rays would actually owe anything as the Trop is operated by the city and county. Wouldn’t it be their responsibility? [The Miami Herald]

The Rays officially announced the signing of Carlos Pena [video of the press conference via Tampa Bay Times is below]. And the Rays posted billboards throughout the area welcoming El Gato back to the team.

But more importantly, as we have been speculating for weeks, Justin Ruggiano has been designated for assignment.

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Hellboy. Let’s just pretend that Josh Hamilton home run never happened. And yes, we hate it when managers defend an outing by saying “he made one bad pitch.” In this case, that one bad pitch didn’t make a difference. The Rays weren’t scoring last night if the game went 18 innings. And any pitcher will take 6 innings and 2 runs against the Rangers offense. If there was a black mark it was the walks. Once again Hellickson struggled with his control walking 4 (1 intentionally). When Hellboy is great, he is a control and command wizard. But this season his strikeout-to-walk ratio is only about 2-to-1. He needs to be at least 3-to-1 and maybe more like 3.5-to-1.

THE BAD: Sunk by the Sinker. Prior to the 9th inning, the Rays hit a grand total of 3 balls out of the infield. And one of those was a groundball single…Not My Longo. It is not often you see Evan Longoria get cheated on swing. But with 2 outs in the 9th, two runners on base, and 2 strikes, Dirtbag got a cutter down-and-away and while just protecting the plate, hit a weak groundball to second base for a game-ending double-play.

THE TELLING: It looks like Jose Lobaton is the catcher the Rays want to call up on Thursday, but he might not be ready…It is not even September, and the 8 teams that lead the playoff chases all have at least a 79.4 percent chance at making the playoffs. That means there is a 60.1 percent chance that all 8 playoff spots in baseball are already decided. It is going to be a boring month…Tim Beckham will be one of the seven prospects that will participate in the Arizona Fall League.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Niemann’s Status, Double-Play D, And JP’s Struggles

Rays 4, Royals 1 (click image for boxscore)

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Jeff Niemann. Is Jeff Niemann making himself the great pitcher we always hoped? Or is he just making himself into a winter trade candidate? In his last 7 starts he has an ERA of 1.65 and has worked into the 7th inning 5 times…Joel Peralta. Where would the bullpen be this season without Peralta? After JP Howell did his best to make an easy win more difficult, Peralta came in with 2 on in the 7th and got a big strikeout. He then got a big double-play to end the 8th…Double-Play D. The Rays got two huge inning-ending double-plays. In the 7th, on a strikeout with 2 runners stealing, Kelly Shoppach threw out the runner at second rather than try for the runner at third. Then in the 8th, with a runner on first and a groundball to first, Casey Kotchman took a huge step towards the mound before throwing to second, making sure that the throw would easily clear the runner and give Elliot Johnson a clear look back to first base.

THE BAD: JP Howell. This is where Joe Maddon drives fans nuts. At this point, why is Howell even a consideration in high-leverage situations? He has zero confidence in himself. And the opposing hitters know this. And when your fastball is upper-80s, it is hard to be successful without any confidence in your stuff.

THE TELLING: If the Yankees go 23-23 down the stretch, they will finish 94-68. The Rays would need to go 31-14 to tie…

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss A Shortstop Shuffle, Cobb’s Surgery, And A Comeback For The Ages

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Comeback For The Ages. Wow. Just wow. 9th innings don’t get anymore exciting than that. When the 9th inning started, the Rays had a 1.5% chance of winning the game. But like any great comeback from a big deficit, the players need to remember there are no 5-run home runs. And the Rays singled and doubled the Royals to death. When Evan Longoria doubled home the first run we sat up a little straighter. But then two infield groundballs scored the next two runs, the second by Casey Kotchman who hasn’t run that fast since he was 18, and all of a sudden we were getting exciting. Still only 1 out, we were skeptical with BJ Upton and Sam Fuld due up. Upton was either going to hit a walk-off home run or strikeout. He did the latter. That left Fuld and we’ll admit, we were just praying for a walk. With Elliot Johnson on first base, typically you would want the runner stealing second with 2 outs to get into scoring position. But with that canon behind the plate, Johnson might as well have been wearing cement shoes. So he was stuck at first. And that meant our best hope for Fuld was just to get Johnson into scoring position and prolong the inning. He went several steps further, driving a ball into the right-center gap which you knew would tie the game. What you didn’t know was that the throw to third would get by the bag, and Fuld, running slower than we have ever seen, found enough gas to scamper home and dive in ahead of the tag. That, that was fun.

THE BAD: Sam Fuld. Yes. Super Sammy. Before he won the game in the 9th, he represented the tying run on third base in the 8th and got picked off by the catcher. Sometimes these things happen, but it can’t happen then. And it can’t happen after the same catcher had already demonstrated his lethal arm several times in the game…Jake McGee. McGee faced three batters striking out 1, walking 1, and giving up a 3-run home run which seemed to seal the Rays fate. So, of course he would get the win.

THE TELLING: Justin Ruggiano was placed on the DL and Reid Brignac was recalled from Durham. Interesting. So a player who has made one start in 3 weeks and who is out of minor league options, suddenly goes on the DL with knee bursitis? Of course he does…Tim Beckham was promoted to triple-A and Hak-Ju Lee was promoted to double-A. Interestingly, Derek Dietrich was not promoted to Charlotte to replace Lee.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: If you get a chance to watch the replay of the pile at home plate, look for Robinson Chirinos. During the entire scrum he is circling the pile looking for a way in, the whole time doing it with a big ole smile on his face. It’s adorable. Like a little kid that wants to play with the big boys…If the Rays sweep the Yankees this weekend, things could start to get interesting. But anything less than a sweep will just be status quo…Look for Tim Beckham to get a nice long look in spring training next year. But we would still be surprised if we see him in the big leagues before August.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss A Late, Late, Late Night

Evan Longoria, Jeff Niemann, Joe Maddon, Justin Ruggiano, Tim Beckham 32 Comments »

Red Sox 1, Rays 0 (16) (click image for boxscore)

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Jeff Niemann. Wow. Just wow. If Niemann is going to be successful, he needs the curveball to be working. Of his 118 pitches in 8 scoreless innings, 31 were curves. Of those, 21 were strikes, 4 swinging and 17 looking. On the night, he had 14 swinging strikes in what may have been Niemann’s best start ever.

THE BAD: Historic. According to Baseball-Reference, no team had ever gone more than 15 inning with less than 4 hits (since 1919). The Rays got 3 hits in 16 innings. So hey, they set a record!…Evan Longoria. If the Rays needed a big hit from a particular player it was Longoria. And if anybody needed a big hit for himself, it was Longoria. And there was Longoria in the bottom of the 9th with a runner on second and 2 outs in a scoreless game. He watched a slider down the middle. Then he popped a lazy flyball to right field. And then in the 12th, he displayed his warning track power. Whatever it is, Longo ain’t right, right now…Justin Ruggiano. If you could sum up Ruggiano’s entire career with one pitch, it would be the ball he hit to the wall in the 10th. For a moment it looked like a trot-off home run. Instead he was robbed…Josh Beckett. In his last 2 starts against the Rays, Beckett has thrown 17 innings, given up 2 hits (both of the infield variety), struck out 12 and walked none. Next time the Rays face Beckett, they should just forfeit and save the energy.

THE TELLING: Joe Maddon was ejected for the 5th time this season. Dave Martinez was later ejected. It was the 12th time this season that a member of the Rays was ejected…Matt Joyce was scratched from the lineup last night after fouling a ball of his knee on Saturday, but did pinch hit late in the game…Alex Cobb has been called up and will start tonight’s game…Tonight’s game will be on ESPN and marks the third straight game to be televised nationally…Desmond Jennings returned from the disabled list on Saturday and went 3-4 with 2 doubles…Tim Beckham’s error on Saturday was his 11th of the year and only the 2nd since June 4th.

Reds 4, Rays 3 (click image for boxscore)

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Evan Longoria. Longo continues to emerge from his funk as his 2-run double in the 6th made it interesting…BJ’s Blast. Upton’s home run in the 7th would have meant a lot more if not for Shields walking two batters to start the top half of the frame.

THE BAD: James the Lesser. James Shields is going to give up home runs. But he can’t give up a home run to Ryan Hanigan. And he definitely can’t give up a home run to Hanigan with 2 runners on base. But even worse than the 3-run home run was the back-to-back walks to start the 7th after the offense had pulled the Rays within 1 run. Shields absolutely has to shut the Reds down at that spot, but the walks led to a run and the game was over.

THE TELLING: Johnny Damon’s 6th inning single tied him with Ted Williams for 71st on the all-time hits list…Tim Beckham has been added to the US squad for the Futures Game at during the All-Star festivities. He will join Hak-Ju Lee and Matt Moore.
