The Rays 2011 All-Stars, David Price, James Shields, and Matt Joyce, have been named the grand marshalls for the 2012 Gasparilla parade on January 28.

Speaking of Shields…Does anybody in baseball have a more intimidating ass? If we were on first base when Shields went into his stretch, we’d be scared.

Just sayin’.

Have The Rays Already Found Their First Baseman?

Matt Joyce 8 Comments »

The idea of moving Matt Joyce to first base has been floated around here for a while. And now it might actually be coming true.

The Rays are working out at The Trop today (how good does that sound), and among those taking grounders at first base was Joyce (per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times). Of course, Reid Brignac also took grounders at first base, so maybe we should temper our excitement.

Still, as a lefty with a little pop in his bat, Joyce would make a good first baseman. And if he can adapt defensively, it would seem the Rays would have an easier time finding a new right fielder (maybe some combination of Sam Fuld and Brandon Guyer, if all else fails).

Of course, we have seen the Rays experiment at first base before Read the rest of this entry »

The 12 Days Of Raysmas: Day 4 (Four All-Stars)

12 Days of Raysmas, BJ Upton, Desmond Jennings, Matt Joyce 25 Comments »

If you have been hanging around these parts for a while, you know that the model for this site is to tell you what the Rays have done, what they are doing and try to project what they will do based on what we have learned. Think of RI as “Tampa Bay Rays 101.”

However, for the next 12 days we will step away from the standard, and we present to you 12 “presents” the Tampa Bay Rays should give to their fans. Looking back at last year’s 12 Days of Raysmas, we see that many of our wishes came true. Many did not. If we can get a couple of more this year, the Rays might just win it all.

Without further ado…

On the fourth day of Raysmas, the Tampa Bay Rays gave to us, FOUR ALL-STARS…

OK. Asking for four all-stars is a lot. But if the Rays are going to be in the race in July, they need at least four players that are at least worthy of all-star consideration. That means Evan Longoria needs to be healthy. And it means James Shields and David Price need to be pitching well.

Those three guys should be Read the rest of this entry »

Rays Are Making A ‘Serious Run’ At A’s Outfielder

BJ Upton, Josh Willingham, Matt Joyce 7 Comments »

According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, the Rays are showing strong interest in signing Josh Willingham of the Oakland A’s…

The Tampa Bay Rays are making a serious run at free agent OF Josh Willingham, BB source says

Willingham is not a new name on the Rays radar. He was targeted by the Rays at this year’s trade deadline, and at the trade deadline in 2010. But both times they were unable to make a deal.

However, acquiring Willingham certainly adds an interesting twist. It would seem Read the rest of this entry »

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Sweet Swingin’. With what may have been the biggest home run for the Rays since 2008, Matt Joyce erased a 7th inning 3-2 deficit with a 3-run home run (HERE IS THE RADIO CALL). And just when you thought the Rays might going into the final day of the season trailing by a game, the Rays won. And now it is tied…Triple Your Pleasure. Before Matty Joyce went deep, defense kept the game close. With one run in already and the Yankees threatening to add more with no outs and the bases loaded. Jeremy Hellickson induced a pitcher’s BFF, the 5-4-3 around-the-horn triple play (HERE IS THE RADIO CALL).

THE BAD: O’s No Go. The Red Sox held off a late rally and beat the Orioles 8-7.

THE TELLING: Johnny Damon passed Lou Gehrig on the all-time hits list and received a standing ovation…Rays now have 90 wins for the third time in franchise history. Of course, the Rays have never won 90 games and missed the playoffs. Just sayin’…The Rays magic number is now 2. A win and Red Sox loss tomorrow, or a win tomorrow and Thursday and the Rays are in the playoffs…The Rays and Red Sox are the first teams to ever start 0-6 and win 90 games.

Rays Struggle To Get The Man In

Johnny Damon, Matt Joyce 3 Comments »

On Tuesday, the Rays lost a 2-1 game when they went 1-7 with runners in scoring position. Of course, we are preaching to the choir if we tell you that this has been a problem all season.

But let’s put the struggles into perspective. Here is how the Rays perform with runners in scoring position and without runners in scoring position. And then we took those numbers to see how they compared to the American League averages in several categories (data through Tuesday’s games)…

Doesn’t paint a pretty picture does it? While the average AL team is about the same with or without RISP (up a tad in some categories, down a tad in others), the Rays numbers are down dramatically with runners on second and/or third.

Interestingly, the Rays’ OBP is Read the rest of this entry »

Matt Joyce Was The Biggest Impact Bat In The First Half

BJ Upton, Casey Kotchman, Evan Longoria, Johnny Damon, Matt Joyce, Reid Brignac 6 Comments »

There are a lot of new stats out there that paint very nice pictures of just how good a batter is. But, for all the awesomeness of WAR (Wins Above Replacement) and wOBA (Weighted On Base Average), they still have one flaw that we see in most stats. That is, they don’t tell you who is getting the hits when it matters most*.

That’s where WPA (Win Probability Added) comes in.

WPA isn’t necessarily an indication of how good a batter is, or how good they will be in the future (that’s where WAR and wOBA come in). Rather, WPA tells us how important a player’s contributions have been.

In short, at any given point in a game, a team has a probability of winning the game. In the first inning it is about 50 percent. If the Rays are winning by 12 runs in the 9th inning, that chance is 99.9 percent.

WPA tells how much that percentage changes from one play to the next. For example, if a player hits a home run in the 9th inning when the Rays are already winning by 12 runs, the WPA is not very much (that home run doesn’t mean much). But if the player hits a 3-run home run in the 9th inning when the Rays are trailing by two, the WPA would be huge (that home run is much more important). At the other end, if a player hits into a double-play in an important situation, that would be a negative WPA.

Think of it this way: if a player does something good (a basehit, stolen base, etc.), they will earn more points if it happens during a critical moment in the game. And if the player does something bad (strikes out, doesn’t get the runner over, caught stealing, etc.) they lose more points if it happens during an important part of the game.

We can then add those up for a player over the course of a season to see how important that player has been (you can read more about WPA here. And you can see WPA in action here).

First up, the hitters, here is their overall WPA…

WPA

Matt Joyce has been the most important bat in the lineup so far. His offensive production has contributed to 2.21 wins on the season. He is followed by Johnny Damon and Casey Kotchman. At the other end, Reid Brignac has killed the Rays offensively (unlike WAR, WPA does not consider defense).

Think of this as the guys that have helped the most or hurt the most. But there is a problem. Obviously, some players have more opportunities. Like RBI, much of a player’s success depends on how many opportunities a player has.

So let’s scale the WPA per 100 plate appearances and see who Read the rest of this entry »
