[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss A Balfour Sign-N-Trade, Playing Golf With Trump And Another Reliever In The Mix

Johnny Damon, Justin Ruggiano, Leslie Anderson 3 Comments »

While the Yankees ended up signing Rafael Soriano, Brian Cashman first had his eyes set on Grant Balfour. But Cashman made it clear in the aftermath of signing Soriano, that he didn’t want to give up the Yankees first round pick. And as a Type A free agent, Balfour would have cost the Yankees their top pick.

To get round this, Cashman was working on a sign-and-trade with the Diamondbacks. Arizona would sign Balfour, and then trade him to the Yankees. Since the D-Backs have the no. 3 pick overall, their first round pick is protected. If the Yankees had signed Balfour, the Rays would have received the no. 31 pick (which they ultimately picked up anyway). But by going through the Diamondbacks, the Rays compensation would have been the no. 63 pick.

Balfour eventually signed with the A’s and the Rays received their second round pick, no. 75 overall.

Leslie Anderson And Justin Ruggiano Designated For Assignment

Johnny Damon, Justin Ruggiano, Leslie Anderson, Manny Ramirez 4 Comments »

Marc Topkin is reporting that the Rays have designated Leslie Anderson and Justin Ruggiano for assignment. The move clears space on the 40-man roster for Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez. The Rays now have 10 days to trade Anderson and Ruggiano or have them subjected to waivers.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Unalignment, Soriano’s Future And The Tampa Bay Remoras

Carl Crawford, Leslie Anderson, Rafael Soriano 9 Comments »

Buster Olney thinks baseball should just get rid of divisions for the sake of competitive balance. The plan would call for the top 5 teams in each league to qualify for the playoffs.

So rather than competing directly with the Red Sox and Yankees every year, the Rays would also be competing with the rest of the American League.

What is the downside? A balanced schedule means more trips to the west coast and the 10pm start times that come with those games. But in the end, that might be a small price to pay for a better shot at making the playoffs each season.

Sickels On Leslie Anderson

Leslie Anderson 3 Comments »

Last week, Leslie Anderson, the Rays prospect that defected from Cuba, won the Arizona Fall League’s Rising Stars game with a walk-off home run.

John Sickels of Minor League Ball now offers his thoughts on Leslie Anderson, a player some think could be the Rays first baseman in 2011…

Cuban defector seems to excite some people with his tools, and he did hit .302/.359/.442 this year at three levels, including .328/.359/.418 in Triple-A. I think he can hit for some average but at age 29 entering 2011, his upside is limited unless his power spikes more than I expect.

We expect to see Anderson at some point Read the rest of this entry »

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Matt Bleepin’ Bush, Anderson’s Big Bomb And Future Homes For Crawford, Pena And Benoit

Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, Joaquin Benoit, Leslie Anderson, Matt Bush, Rafael Soriano 7 Comments »

The Rays added former top pick-turned-delinquent-turned-pitcher Matt Bush to the 40-man roster to avoid losing him to free agency. Bush who was the top pick by the Padres in the 2004, was converted to a pitcher in 2007. Tommy John surgery shut him down until 2009, a year that saw Bush traded to Toronto, released by the Jays and arrested twice.

Bush appeared in only six games this year (all with single-A Charlotte), striking out 12 and walking 2 in 8 innings.

What The Rays Can Expect From Leslie Anderson In September

Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, Leslie Anderson 10 Comments »

Back in March, the Rays signed Cuban defector Leslie Anderson to a 4-year, $3.75 million contract. After starting the season in single-A, Anderson has moved very quickly through the organization hitting .303/.371/.453 with 9 home runs at three different levels. With his recent promotion to triple-A Durham, it seems almost certain that he will be promoted to the Rays during the September roster expansion.

But what kind of hitter can we expect once he is promoted and how will the Rays use him? Let’s take a closer look.

Lefty-Righty splits…

Well, with splits like that, Anderson will almost certainly never be an everyday player for the Rays. He does have a big disparity in Batting Average on Balls In Play (BABIP) versus lefties (.203) and righties (.377). That might explain some of the disparity in his splits. Still, we would be surprised if he saw much playing time, if any, versus left-handed pitchers. But he should get a lot of looks against righties.

What kind of hitter is he?

He is a solid contact hitter striking out only 11.9% of the time. For comparisons, Evan Longoria’s strikeout rate is Read the rest of this entry »

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss Gutsy JoeMa, Pinball Baseball And Big Dub’s BP Fastball

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

THE GOOD: Gutsy. Down 6-2 with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 8th, Joe Maddon had Jason Bartlett pinch-hit for Matt Joyce against a lefty. At this point, the Rays one true hope was a grand slam and JoeMa chose Bartlett over both Ben Zobrist and Carlos Pena. If Maddon is going to be unconventional, the criticisms are fair when he is wrong. But if we are going to do that we also have to tip our cap when Bartlett hits a grand slam and Maddonology works.

THE BAD: Pinball Baseball. We have long defended The Trop, but now we’re done. Just blow it up and let’s move on. The catwalks have always been one of those quirks that Rays fans knew to be not as bad as many outsiders believed. After all, how often do they actually affect a ball in play? And would we have taken the win if the roles were reversed? Absolutely. But it would have left a bad taste in our mouths. No game should ever be decided by the catwalks…Wade Davis. If not for Jason Bartlett’s grand slam we would have never been talking about the catwalks and all the blame would be placed firmly on the shoulders of Big Dub whose fastball was just not there yesterday. His fastball averaged only 89 mph and only 31 of 44 were thrown for strikes. Of those 31 strikes, exactly zero were swinging strikes. In fact, Davis had only 3 swinging strikes in 6 innings. For comparison, Jeremy Hellickson had 14 swinging strikes on Monday, 5 of those coming off his fastball.

THE TELLING: Andy Sonnanstine made a “rehab” start last night for single-A Charlotte (see below)…According to CoolStandings.com the Rays have an 88.0% shot at making the playoffs…The Red Sox and Yankees begin a 4-game series this weekend in the Bronx.

WHERE THEY STAND: The Rays are 67-41, one-half game behind the Yankees in the East and 5.5 games ahead of the Red Sox. After 108 games in 2008, the Rays were 64-44.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss A Stadium Situation That Is Going To Get Uglier Before It Gets Better

Aki Iwamura, Jeremy Hellickson, Leslie Anderson, New Stadium, Wade Davis 16 Comments »

Much has been made of our “proposal” yesterday in which we suggested the only regional answer for a new Rays stadium would be for Tampa and St. Pete to literally share the Rays. We never said it was the best idea, or even a good idea. We simply believe it to be the only way in which the Rays get what they want (a stadium in Tampa) and St. Pete doesn’t get royally screwed. And for all the criticism, nobody has proposed a better solution, or any solution for that matter.

So if you think the idea is “silly” or “dumb,” fine. We don’t have a problem with that. But if there isn’t a better idea for regional cooperation, then either the Rays are going to move, Stuart Sternberg is going to sell or the the two sides are heading for a lengthy and ugly court battle that will probably end with the Rays moving or selling.

Why? Because there is absolutely no reason for St. Pete to let the Rays out of their contract. Let’s face it, even if the two cities are somehow able to overcome their boundaries as Sternberg suggests, once the Rays move to Tampa, the Rays will be Tampa’s team and St. Pete, their residents and their businesses will be left out in the rain.

[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss A Rare Leadoff, The Mad Australian And Garza’s Strange Repertoire

Carlos Pena, Grant Balfour, John Jaso, Leslie Anderson, Matt Garza, Sergio Espinosa, Wade Davis 5 Comments »

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

click above image for boxscore

THE GOOD: John Jaso And The Leadoff Spot. Sure you want speed at the top of the order, but it is more important to have a guy that can get on base, and JJ Dynomite can get on base. Yesterday he came to the plate 6 times. He walked, singled, doubled and hit a big 2-run home run. All told, he drove in 5 runs and he even stole a base. So that thing about speed is moot also…Bottom of the Order. And why did a leadoff hitter have 5 RBI? Because the Rays 7-8-9 hitters (Rodriguez, Brignac, Upton) went a combined 6-14 with a walk and scored 6 runs…Grant Balfour. He will never be 2008 Mad Australian, but 2010 Mad Australian is looking pretty good. Yesterday, he came in when the Rays lead was only 1 and recorded 2 scoreless innings with 4 strikeouts and no walks. On the season he now has 25 Ks and just 4 walks. He is 1 of only 3 relief pitchers in the AL with at least 20 Ks and no more than 5 walks.

THE BAD: Matt Garza. He picked up the win with a little help from his friends. And it wasn’t like Garza was terrible. Only 1 run came via a home run. 67 of his 108 pitches were strikes. He even did a good job of throwing first-pitch strikes (16 of 24) something that he struggles with at times. So what was the problem? Normally, Garza will throw the 4-seem fastball well over 50% of the time (59.1%), but yesterday it was just 7 of 108 pitches (6.5%) according to PitchF/x. Instead, Garza was throwing his 2-seem fastball (60.2%), a pitch he usually only uses 11.0% of the time. So was this part of a specific game plan for attacking the Rangers or did Garza just not have confidence in his 4-seemer yesterday? Typically, a 2-seem fastball has more movement than a 4-seemer. But Garza’s 4-seemer already has a lot of natural movement. Did the weather play a factor? In the hot dry air of Texas it is possible that Garza’s 4-seemer did not have the typical movement and he felt the need to use his 2-seemer more. The problem is, the 2-seemer is a slower pitch and by using it more, Garza was effectively a weaker pitcher. We wish we had an accurate PitchF/x from Matt Garza’s start in Texas 2 years ago in which he scuffled with Dioner Navarro. That was another hot afternoon game and we wonder if use of the 4-seem fastball led to the argument.

THE TELLING: John Jaso was the first catcher to ever bat leadoff for the Rays/Devil Rays. He was also the first catcher in baseball the AL to bat leadoff this year…Joe Maddon has now used a different lineup in 9 straight games and 41 of 57 games this year…Sunday’s game took 4:06.

WHERE THEY STAND: The Rays are 37-20, 2 games ahead of the Yankees and 4.5 games ahead of the Red Sox and Blue Jays in the Wild Card. After 57 games in 2008, the Rays were 35-22.
