Rays Improve To 6-0 In Arbitration Hearings With Victory Over Niemann

Andrew Friedman, Arbitration cases, Jeff Niemann 3 Comments »

The Rays won yesterday’s arbitration hearing with Jeff Niemann, who will now make $2.75 million in 2012. The Giraffe had been seeking $3.2 million. The Rays have never lost an arbitration case, moving to 6-0 overall, and 5-0 since Andrew Friedman was named VP of Baseball Operations.

Niemann’s 2012 salary lowers the Rays 2012 projected payroll to $64.3 million. This of course means more money for World Series rings!

AUDIO: Luke Scott Talks About Signing With The Rays

Luke Scott and Andrew Friedman spoke with the media earlier today. The most important thing we learned is that Scott won’t be able to play the outfield until May or June, but should be ready to DH or even play first base by opening day.

Report: Friedman Turns Down Astros

Andrew Friedman No Comments »

Bill Shaikin of the LA Times is reporting that Andrew Friedman has turned down the Astros.

Hearing Rays GM already has decided against taking Astros job.

No surprise here. And not surprising that Friedman would make a decision prior to the onset of the Winter Meetings.

Our correspondent Jordi Scrubbing is back with his latest take on all things Rays…

With the annual baseball winter meetings almost upon us (and no, I am not going this year as I did in 2006 and 2010), the Rays are looking to tweak, twist, and trade their way into a better roster than they had last year. Anyone who watched them last year knows they had problems. Even though they won 91 games, they were far from a perfect team.

But before talking about future acquisitions or who the Rays might part ways with, I want to talked about who the Rays have already added to the team this offseason. It is usually rare for the Rays for pick up players in the early days of the offseason. And the two players the Rays have added to the roster so far couldn’t be more diametrically opposite. One is a pitcher who hopes his personal past doesn’t affect his potential, and the other is a catcher who hopes his on-the-field contributions can merit keeping his knowledge.

The last time I wrote here I wrote a letter to Rays owner Stu Sternberg. I wrote about the need to market the team better. I mentioned how the organization could better use social media, how they could better push their personalities, and a few ideas for theme nights and other brainstorms that I thought may increase ticket sales.

One of the ideas I didn’t mention because I thought it was common sense was to stay away from problem children – those players who have somewhat nefarious backgrounds. I get that some problem children have very good stats or very good potential and they usually come cheap. But one slip up could mar public perception of the team and give the organization a deeper black eye than the same action would for the Yankees or the Cubs or any almost any other team.

So far the Rays have had success with players who might be considered “behaviorally risky”. And they’ve shimmied off players such as Elijah Dukes and Al Reyes after their misdeeds. For example, they took a risk on Matt Bush, he of the infamous drunk police dispute and so far Bush has been a success.

Although each player brings his own set of conditions and drama, I think the organization is playing with fire by taking chances with players with nefarious backgrounds. The Rays have to fight against a very difficult environment. For whatever reason the Tampa area is a hotbed for athlete misbehavior and unfortunately I think it’s just a matter of time before the Rays get burnt.

I’m not saying some players can turn over a Read the rest of this entry »

The Rays gave all of their coaches two-year extensions. Well, all of them except bullpen coach Bobby Ramos. And that means we won’t have anymore scenes like the one at right. Or this one from 2010.

Ramos missed a good chunk of the 2011 season with a throat infection and bronchitis. And even though Ramos is once again healthy, the Rays did not renew his contract. Instead, Stan Boroski who served as the bullpen coach during Ramos’ absence, will be the new bullpen coach.

Joe Maddon, who has one year remaining on his contract, has yet to sign a new deal.

Friedman Is Astros’ ‘No. 1 Choice’ To Replace Ed Wade

Andrew Friedman 3 Comments »

Yesterday we heard that the Astros had contacted the Rays about interviewing Andrew Friedman. And now, Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle is reporting that the Rays have granted permission to the Astros.

Justice calls Friedman, the Astros “No. 1 choice” to replace recently fired Ed Wade.

We speculated that Friedman would at least meet with the team to discuss their general manager position. But keep in mind, it might take more to lure Friedman away from Stuart Sternberg and Company than just throwing a lot of money at him. Friedman actually has a financial stake in the Rays.

So if the Astros are serious about signing Friedman, they may have to offer him a package similar to what Theo Epstein received with the Cubs. That is, the Astros could offer to make Friedman the team’s president. In addition to Wade, the Astros also fired team president Tal Smith.

Either way, we should know more sooner, rather than later.

Astros Want To Interview Andrew Friedman

Andrew Friedman, Gerry Hunsicker 2 Comments »

As we speculated this morning, the Astros moved quickly and have already called the Tampa Bay Rays seeking permission to interview Andrew Friedman (via Stacy Long).

The Houston Astros have “made the call” to ask the Tampa Bay Rays for permission to speak with Andrew Friedman about their vacant general manager’s position, according to Jim Bowden on SiriusXM’s Inside Pitch today. Bowden said he didn’t know what the answer was.

The Astros fired general manager Ed Wade last night.

In addition to Friedman, there is speculation that the Astros may go after Gerry Hunsicker, who was the Astros GM from 1995-2004.

Prepare Yourself For Another Round Of Andrew Friedman Rumors

At this point, all signs point to Andrew Friedman being back with the Rays in 2012. But late last night, the Houston Astros announced that they have fired General Manager Ed Wade. And while it is certainly a long-shot, expect the Astros to reach out to Friedman sometime this week to gauge his interest.

Earlier this year we heard that the Astros new owner Jim Crane is “infatuated with the idea of prying [Friedman] away from the Rays.” And later, Richard Justice told us that Friedman was giving his friends the impression that he wants to be the Astros GM. And as recently as last week, the Astros still had Friedman on their list of candidates.

Will Friedman interview with the Astros? Well, he did interview with the Angels, and by all accounts, Friedman would be more interested in the Astros job.

With the Hot Stove season already in full-swing, you can imagine Crane will want to hire a new GM very quickly. So if something is going to happen with Friedman, it will probably happen this week. So hold on tight.

Major League Baseball has announced they will add a second Wild Card team to each league starting next season. We’ve known this was coming for a while, but the implications for the Rays could be huge.

Now it is possible that three teams from the same division can make the playoffs. The downside is that if a team does not win their division, they will likely be forced to play a winner-take-all one-game playoff against the other Wild Card team.

The Orioles Asked To Interview Andrew Friedman…Seriously

Andrew Friedman, Baltimore Orioles 3 Comments »

A lot of big teams have been looking for new general managers this off-season, so it is understandable if the Baltimore Orioles’ search has flown a bit under the radar. But that hasn’t stopped the O’s from aiming high.

According to Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com, the Orioles have requested permission to interview Andrew Friedman.

OK, OK…stop laughing. Yes, yes. We know. Friedman could just about have any job in Major League Baseball, so there is a better chance of the Rays signing Prince Fielder, than there is of Friedman leaving for the O’s.

But let’s be fair. The Orioles wouldn’t be doing their job if they didn’t at least call. Even UCF sends letters to the nation’s best high school football players.
