Ryan Brett

Ryan Brett beard update.

It’s early and it is spring training, but the offensive numbers are looking up for the Rays.

In their first five games, the Rays are hitting .312 (fifth among all teams) with a .820 OPS (tenth). They also have 21 doubles, tops among all teams.

On the flip side, the Rays are one of only five teams to have fewer than three home runs so far (the Rays have two) and the Rays lead all teams with 12 errors.

  • Most of the Rays’ top starting pitchers were acquired in trades. But there is a new wave of homegrown starting pitchers getting closer to the big leagues. [TampaBay.com]
  • We linked to this story last week when discussing the Chris Archer trade, but the story itself is an interesting read on the Red Sox and how they may be turning away from analytics a bit. [Boston Globe]
  • JP Arencibia is now with the Phillies after playing 24 games with the Rays last season. It turns out last year was a bit of a breakthrough for Arencibia as he had been battling mental health issues, including anxiety. A new drug has helped his situation as he continues to work his way back to the big leagues. [Philly.com]

  1. Craig says:

Went to some games in Durham last year with Arencibia playing over at first base. He seemed like a great ambassador for the team, having a lot of fun when the innings ended at first and giving the ball out on his way to the dugout to the herd of kids going nuts trying for a souvenir. Big smiles all around. I hope he has a lot of success with his new club.
