Happy Baseball Season! The Rays open the spring training season today against the Washington Nationals with Jake Odorizzi on the mound. Erasmo Ramirez will start on Thursday with Chris Archer going on Friday.

That means actual games played on actual baseball fields with player names we may or may not recognize. But that’s OK, because baseball is back and players are already making plays!

In more Spring Training news, the previously reported trip to Cuba is now official as the Rays will play the Cuban national team in Havana on March 22. It will be the first time an MLB team has visited Cuba since 1999.

The trip also coincides with President Barack Obama’s trip to the island, so it would seem he will likely be in attendance. The game will be aired on ESPN.

  • It is Power Ranking season! A familiar face is on top, but it is not the Rays. [BI Sports]
  • St. Pete has launched a campaign to keep the Rays. It is probably a complete waste of money, but OK. [TampaBay.com]
  • Jayson Stark writes about the possibility that the Rays will trade James Loney this spring. [ESPN]
  • Peter Gammons writes about the “optimistic state of the Rays.” Interestingly, he opens the piece by talking about “record attendance of nearly 17,000” at FanFest (Gammons was in attendance). That is not even close to being true. The Rays have drawn 20,000 to FanFest several times and 25,000 at least once. [Gammons Daily]
  • Jayson Stark also wrote a long piece on Chris Archer. In it, Archer takes an exception to the perception that he “scolded” Blake Snell and Jacob Faria early in camp. Of course, if Archer had not done it in front of the media, this wouldn’t be an issue. [ESPN]
  • Anybody want to read 2,100 words on Alex Colome and how he threw a cutter more often after moving to the bullpen? To you young writers out there, more does not equal better. Never write something in 2,000 words when it can be written in 500. Your readers will thank you. [Gammons Daily]

This article is hilarious too. Rays staff at #11? Should be top 5 and higher once Cobb is back. http://mlb-teams.pointafter.com/stories/11051/ranking-2016-mlb-starting-rotations-worst-best?utm_medium=cm&utm_source=outbrain&utm_campaign=ao.cm.ob.dt.10380#27-Cleveland-Indians
