With the Rays needing to protect minor leaguers from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft, several players were added to the 40-man roster and several players lost their jobs.

The Rays started by adding right-handed pitcher Chase Whitley off of waivers from the Yankees. Whitley started 16 games for the Yankees over the last two seasons with a 5.02 ERA.

In addition, the Rays added minor league pitchers Blake Snell (the 2015 minor league player of the year), Taylor Guerrieri (the Rays’ first-round pick in 2011), Jacob Faria, and German Marquez as well as infielder Taylor Motter.

To make room on the roster, the Rays put JP Arencibia, Daniel Nava, Brandon Gomes, and Kirby Yates on waivers. Grayson Garvin and Burch Smith were outrighted to triple-A and removed from the 40-man roster.

  • The Rays have been selected to be one of the teams that would play in a potential exhibition in Cuba during spring training. Several teams wanted to make the trip and Rob Manfred pulled the Rays’ name out of a bin. It would be just the second MLB exhibition in Cuba since 1959, and the first since the Orioles in 1999. • More teams interested in Jake McGee and Brad Boxberger, include Dodgers, Nationals, and Diamondbacks. At this point, this is silly. Can somebody just report that every team would be interested in having one or both? Oh, looks like I just did. [Jerry Crasnick]
