RAYS 5, White Sox 4 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Richie Shaffer (above) had an odd start to his big league career. Batting 6th, Shaffer came to the plate in the first inning and promptly got hit by a pitch on the second pitch he ever saw in the bigs. He took the HBP, went to first base, and was all smiles…Another solid start for Nathan Karns who has quietly turned into a huge addition to the Rays’ roster and will be a big reason why the Rays will be a trendy bounce-back pick in 2016…Speaking of quiet, Evan Longoria quietly has 8 hits in the last 4 games including 3 last night. Of course, it is mostly quiet because 6 of the 8 are singles and none are home runs, but we’ll take it…The 2-5 hitters went 9-15 with 2 walks…What the hell were the White Sox thinking? With the tying run on second with no outs in the 9th inning, a line drive was hit right to Kevin Kiermaier who then threw out the runner at home BY A MILE. If the White Sox just hold the runner at third, they have a man on third with no outs and almost certainly tie the game at some point.

THE BAD: I don’t think I have ever seen a player swing this hard with 2 strikes, so hard that their bottom hand came off the bat as is what happened to Richie Shaffer.

Poor Kevin Kiermaier. He can’t catch them all.

THE TELLING: The Rays made the demotion of Matt Moore to triple-A official prior to the game…The Rays are now 53-54, 2 games back in the Wild Card with 3 teams they need to pass.

  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscores] The Durham Bulls beat Indianapolis 4-3 with Matt Andriese striking out 6 and giving up 1 run in 5 innings. Desmond Jennings was 0-4 with a strikeout as the DH…Montgomery beat Mississippi 1-0 with a Leonardo Reginatto RBI-single in the top of the 12th. Taylor Guerrieri tossed 5 shutout innings, giving up 2 hits and a walk. He struck out 3.

Star Wars night for the Tampa Yankees on Saturday.

It's nice to see some Rays' higher draft picks start to work their way into the bigs (Beckham, Mahtook, Shaffer)...

It's even more nice to see the Rays scoring runs again.
If they can pick up their RPG a bit they can make the home stretch pretty interesting. They are currently 2nd to last in baseball with 3.63. If they can consistently score more runs and move that number up 1/4 run per game they would vault to 21st in RPG and I'm certain the standings would reflect that growth.
